Pink or no Pink

My son is about to turn 3 and I'm getting him a balance bike he wants a very specific one which is a vintage style bike with a basket and is Pink with white tyres....his dad has outright said no because it's 'a girls bike' he has tried to show him others and has told him he isn't allowed Pink but he still picks the same one every time.....would anybody just buy the Pink or buy a different one and hope he likes it?

DH is making this a bigger deal than it is. It's just a colour

Buy the bike your son wants

But learn from this, if your son grows up to be gay/trans/feminine he's clearly going to need you in his corner. Because it sounds like his dad won't be.

I had said to his dad before what would you do if he was gay he just said .... well he's not going to be....I obviously shot that down and said if he is then he is. To me as long as he's happy and himself then why should it matter

What???? He is a male. Male is a gender?

Male is one of the two biological sexes.

Gender is a social construct, which is a fancy way of saying it is completely imaginary.

Pink

I'd like to guide my child into something aimed at his gender. If you don't then that's up to you but don't put me down for doing what I feel is right

Bikes are for boys and girls, the colour doesn't matter.

Allhatnocattle · 03/04/2025 21:47

Get him the bike he wants, if he hates it weeks down the line it can be spray painted.

boys can have pink or purple or whatever

A have a relative who divorced her husband because their son turned out to be gay and he wouldn't accept it.

What's the difference between a pink bike and a bike of any other colour and what makes them more for girls or boys, in your opinion?

That says a lot about your Dh outlook,it runs deeper than a colour of a bike.
Honestly some are like something from a bygone era.

He's a walking red flag.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/04/2025 21:52

Have you asked him what he likes about the bike? Is it the color or the basket? It may not be the color that he’s drawn to.

After that I’d ask how long you expect him to ride it. I remember a recent thread where a little boy was starting to get picked on because of his choice. Can’t remember his age though…. But it’s something to consider. Yes children shouldn’t say mean things to other children…blah..blah..blah….

The same as most people's opinions I'm guessing just clearly not the ones on this thread. If you walk down the girls clothes aisle in morrisons there's lots of pink. Walk down the boys clothing aisle- not so pink. Think about it

I have tried to ask but his speech isn't properly there so just kept saying I want pink bike.....so I brought up balance bikes on Google and he kept picking out the same style all with a basket all vintage style and all variations of pink barring maybe one which was like an antique blue

My worry is partly that is might change his mind or have it changed for him by his dad and dad's side saying it's a girls bike and make him want a different one. Which wouldn't be fair on him. He wanted a doll he got a doll he wanted monster trucks he got monster trucks. If it's what he likes it's what he likes.....He'll be riding around on a pink bike with a dinosaur helmet haha

Yes I did worry that his dad might persuade him to change his mind, which is awful.

When my DS was about 2 we went to an NCT nearly new sale. His Dad gave him some money and told him he cooked not whatever he wanted, "even if Mummy says no" (he was desperate for DS to have a drum kit and I vetoed it on the basis our house was tiny and I was pregnant and just thought it was a terrible idea). He was really unimpressed when DS came home proudly pushing his new pushchair Grin

That just means society is sexist, it doesn't mean that boys can't wear or use something that is pink.

Go and educate yourself. Gender is the distinction of sex. Op has told us she's referring to her son!

Educate yourself.

We live in an imperfect world 🤷‍♀️ in the meantime I’m not sure I’d want my son taking on the social constructs of the day.

Is the dh worried that ds catches the gay from the pink bike.
Christ it's only a colour

When my son was in primary school a trip was organised to a performance by the Birmingham Royal ballet company. My son was very excited about it. My TA had a son the same age. She wouldn't let her son go. There had been a bomb attack a few months before so I thought it was that. Nope " Aren't you worried it'll....turn him gay ?". Um ....no.

My DS is gay and sadly refuses too come to the Ballet with me. Apparently it's "boring". It's almost as if stereotypes are nonsense isn't it!

Polecat07 · 03/04/2025 22:00

I'd worry more about the homophobic husband than the bike

I disagree about society being sexist I just think the worlds gone mad. Anyway I've made my comment. Knew some wouldn't like it but each to their own. My son would wear a boyish pink top too but I wouldn't put him in a pink skirt :)

Gotcha… I was hoping to offer an easy solution 😁

Probably then go back to my other thought… forget about dad, he’ll get over it. Do you think he’ll outgrow it before the peer pressure sets in?

Many people also think that dolls are for girls and toy trucks are for boys.

Is that what you think?

Nope. But would it matter if I did?

LucyMonth · 03/04/2025 22:02

My son is 3 years and 3 months and this is the bike we’ve just bought him! He tried every one in his size at Halfords and this is the one he wanted.

My only suggestion would be to get a proper bike instead of a balance bike for a 3 year old.
