Pink or no Pink

LifesUturn · 03/04/2025 21:08

My son is about to turn 3 and I'm getting him a balance bike he wants a very specific one which is a vintage style bike with a basket and is Pink with white tyres....his dad has outright said no because it's 'a girls bike' he has tried to show him others and has told him he isn't allowed Pink but he still picks the same one every time.....would anybody just buy the Pink or buy a different one and hope he likes it?

I think it looks great, OP. Definitely get him that one.

I appreciate not many people have voted yet, but 44% think YABU?! 🤯 Hopefully we get an influx of sanity soon.

I didn't vote as I wasn't sure which way was reasonable and which not - maybe others are confused. Anyway, get him the pink one :)

Helplessandheartbroke · 03/04/2025 21:28

I'm going well against the grain and saying I personally would encourage a bike more for his gender. But he's 3 so I wouldn't said no if he's adament

HaddyAbrams · 03/04/2025 21:28

Get him the bike he wants, unless he's prone to changing his mind and won't like it after a week.

It's not entirely clear from the way the post is worded what each vote is meant to mean. I voted YABU because it sounded as though the OP was entertaining her husband's ridiculous sexism and seriously doubting whether it was OK to buy the pink bike.

Ddakji · 03/04/2025 21:30

Are you and his dad together?

Same here. I'd probably opt for a yellow or green one. Others can say that pink used to be a boy's colour, which is true, except things have changed since the 1800s.

Ah, hopefully that’s it! OP, sounds like the message is clear - pink it is!

LaTable · 03/04/2025 21:32

Please tell me you're buying the pink bike?!
Dh can go suck an egg. If he cares more about his own discomfort of a colour rather than the pure joy of his son he can go suck two eggs.

He doesn’t have a gender aged 3. He has a sex. A pink bike doesn’t change that.

He doesn't want a yellow or a green one though, he wants a pink one. It's his bike, he should get to decide on the colour.

Laura95167 · 03/04/2025 21:35

DH is making this a bigger deal than it is. It's just a colour

Buy the bike your son wants

But learn from this, if your son grows up to be gay/trans/feminine he's clearly going to need you in his corner. Because it sounds like his dad won't be.

UmmH · 03/04/2025 21:36

He's 3, no one will care. Tell DH he can help him pick his next bike if he wants to.

HaddyAbrams · 03/04/2025 21:28

Get him the bike he wants, unless he's prone to changing his mind and won't like it after a week.

My worry is partly that is might change his mind or have it changed for him by his dad and dad's side saying it's a girls bike and make him want a different one. Which wouldn't be fair on him. He wanted a doll he got a doll he wanted monster trucks he got monster trucks. If it's what he likes it's what he likes.....He'll be riding around on a pink bike with a dinosaur helmet haha

What???? He is a male. Male is a gender?

Helplessandheartbroke · 03/04/2025 21:38

Kissedbyfire1 · 03/04/2025 21:30

Why?

Just my preference

Cindy1802 · 03/04/2025 21:38

My 4YO got a hot pink pedal bike for his birthday. We actually accidentally bought it, we thought it was red in the pics and when it arrived we did ask each other if it was ok for him.... And we both absolutely said yes of course, he's blooming 4 years old!! He loves it, and not once mentioned the colour.

Male is not a gender. It is a sex.

Go and educate yourself. Gender is the distinction of sex. Op has told us she's referring to her son!

You wouldn't be the one riding the bike though so why would your preference matter more than the child's?

ThinWomansBrain · 03/04/2025 21:43

just tell H that DS has decided he is non binary and would prefer to use gender neutral pronouns.
Problem solved 😂🚲

If your husband does that, he will abusing his power over the poor child.
That is utterly immoral. And not something I would tolerate.

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 03/04/2025 21:44

If I saw a little boy riding that bike in the street I probably wouldn’t give it a second glance, but if I gave it any thought at all I might think perhaps it was handed down from an older sister.

I'd like to guide my child into something aimed at his gender. If you don't then that's up to you but don't put me down for doing what I feel is right
