Broken radiator in spring....(not boiler!)

A colleague called in sick due to toothache every other week, usually for 2 days. She regularly tried to go home at 3:30 pm because she had to water her lawn. I told her to do that later in the evening or at the weekend but she claimed that because we didn’t pay her enough, she had a second job waitressing. The managing director adored her so we couldn’t get rid of her.

Called in to say her dog had died. She took 2 weeks off and expected bereavement leave. When told no, she called in with stress. When told we wanted a sick certificate and the OT would call round to collect it, her husband came in and threatened the manager! She had the cushiest job in the council!

Woman who was often off work. She said she got drunk, fell off a table and broke her arm. She turned up the next day without a broken arm.

”I was out running, and found myself running in the wrong direction, which meant it took me longer to get home.”

Guinea pig had a fit

That could actually be quite serious though.

My wife has an eye infection. Luckily l didn’t answer the phone as l would have been tempted to ask what it has to do with him and why can’t she ring her own wifkpldcd herself

SwanOfThoseThings · 03/04/2025 07:56

My dad's cat died - when the colleague returned people had drawn pictures of a 'sleeping' cat with RIP above its bed, and put on his desk.

The pictures thing is just nasty - if that's the kind of thing that went on in the workplace, I'm not surprised the colleague was making excuses not to go in.

GinJeanie · 03/04/2025 07:56

I had a Frisbee accident. Was hit in the face full force and ended up with concussion and a broken nose. I told the truth but was aware it sounded lame! However, went for an A&E check-up and had very back eye at work the next day so my story stacked up...

He's been in a bad way since his football team lost last night. Same person said his wife was sick, sounds reasonable but she works for the same company and comes walking into work a little while later doing her full shift and full of spirit.

I know someone who had a month off when she failed her driving test ….

I was still drunk from the night before,
I couldnt lie as it was the managers leaving do and everyone was there
I was 16 and had been downing pints with the guys
When i went back to work the next day, The New Manager just said ‘Maybe dont get so drunk on the next party when you have work the next day and laughed’

I got very drunk at a work party when I was a trainee and couldn't do anything the next day but I couldn't call in sick as I'd slept at work (obviously couldn't drive home as I was drunk - I hadn't intended to drink) and was likely still over the limit so couldn't go home. Just said to my boss that next time we should have the work party when we don't have to work the next morning! Then spent most of the day at the coffee table reading documents.

IDontHateRainbows · 03/04/2025 08:04

I used to work in HR for a factory so had the enviable task of reviewing the absence slips and putting them on the system. Best 'illness' I ever saw was when someone had just put 'beer badly' ( badly means poorly in Yorkshire).

Honest at least!

Robyn847 · 03/04/2025 08:05

Woman rang in sick because she'd sprained her ankle chasing a squirrel away from her apple trees.

Friend of my H had had a stent/ bypass ( something) done only worked 3 days and scheduled all of his checkups/physio on his work days - worked for local authority

To be fair, you definitely don’t get to ‘schedule’ major surgery follow up appointments. You’re expected to take what you’re given generally or wait a potentially dangerous length of time.

I made a cottage pie in the morning before work. When I was mashing the potatoes a load flicked up in my face/eye and scolded me really badly. I sat with cold flannels on all morning. Didn’t go to work. Until
it healed it looked like I had several patches of ring worm 😂 I had to say I burned my face with potatoes

Current winner. This is amazing.

Her 10 month old had done an unusually loud burp after having her milk, so mum wanted to keep her off for 48 hours in case it was the start of Gastroenteritis. No vomiting, just a loud burp 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

A colleague in my Saturday job called in sick when Take That broke up. I was 17, she was an adult (30s?) working full time! I think she was told she had to come in because I remember her crying in the locker room. Can't remember if it was the same colleague who was in dramatic pieces when Diana died a year or so later.

Most legit reason ive read. It was a dark day. Tho i was 14

Widowerwouldyou · 03/04/2025 08:10

I was once in a (self-inflicted) accident when I took a day off sick and took my kids ice-skating. I fell and broke my wrist. Had to tell
employers that I had slipped on the decking at home… As a result couldn’t go on a sling holiday a few days later… Saw it as a karma from the universe and warning not to pull a sickie again… 😂

mamajong · 03/04/2025 08:10

Couldn't afford petrol for the car - yet had posted on social media about being out partying all weekend 🤨

Icanhearabee · 03/04/2025 08:10

Because their mum was taking them to watch Pets at the cinema that day. I was working at the local Travelodge at the time as a cleaner in the holidays during uni and because those sisters didn’t go in it meant more rooms for everyone to clean. Totally selfish.

Punzel · 03/04/2025 08:11

Colleague came all the way in to our central London office, got to the door (it’s a big office building and has one of those revolving doors) and the door would not revolve. Instead of walking a few feet to her left and using the disabled entrance, as signposted, she didn’t see the sign and went home instead. At her review when asked why she wasn’t come in to the office three times a week as per policy, she said because the door wasn’t always reliable.

WingingItMam48 · 03/04/2025 08:12

I once worked with someone who called on sick with trauma due to hearing about the Moors Murders for the first time. He apparently was driving down the motorway with a friend oast Saddleworth and his friend commented that was where the murders happened. This guy asked what his friend meant and after hearing the story for the first time was so traumatised he had to call in sick the next day. No connection to the murders or family history, just trauma. He had form for skiving off regularly, going to the betting shop when he was supposed to be on work errands, fiddling the clocking in machine, stealing petty cash. He was let go soon after.
