Broken radiator in spring....(not boiler!)

An hour late because they'd managed to forget to put their trousers on and drove all the way to work before they realised. They phoned me from the car park and I told them to go home and come back when they were fully clothed

I did once get halfway to work without a skirt on....

Grandpa died for the 5th time

I think until you are in your forties, it's useful to keep at least a couple of grandparents alive whenever you start a new job.

DH went to London very early one morning by train and took my car and house keys with him in his pocket.
I couldn't find my spare and my job was mobile and needed a car so couldn't get a bus or anything.
Another time I lived in a flat in a converted mill and the whole complex was accessed via an archway. The builders working on finishing the development weren't paid and so they parked a truck in the archway so nobody could get in or out by car. It was there for 2 days before it was removed

I worked with a woman whose mum used to phone up on her behalf and say things like "Sally isn't well rested she won't be coming in today" and famously called once to say asking Sally to drive to a site visit 60 miles away was unreasonable and she wouldn't be doing it. Sally was a married woman in her 30s who didn't live with her mum!

I'm wondering if Sally's Mum didn't approve of a married woman working, and was trying to get her sacked.

Parrotinthehouse · 03/04/2025 08:59

Best one from my workplace….her puppy had eaten her keys and she had to stay home and check they came out the other end.

also work with someone who works from home some days yet all their appointments are made for the days they should be in the office.

To be fair, you definitely don’t get to ‘schedule’ major surgery follow up appointments. You’re expected to take what you’re given generally or wait a potentially dangerous length of time.

You can't be picky with appointment times. Some consultants work at another hospital as well. As one of the eye consultants does 1.5 days at a hospital about 35 miles from the one I see him at.

Friend of my H had had a stent/ bypass ( something) done only worked 3 days and scheduled all of his checkups/physio on his work days - worked for local authority

when I worked only three days my boss gave me hell for my infant son needing an operation on my work day. However the consultant only operated on particular days and it wasn’t being done for giggles.

I had a colleague that couldn’t work because he had athletes foot.

my broken radiator had flooded a bedroom and I had to empty it completely and rip up the carper as a matter of urgency, also hunt down and get beck in the workmen who had caused it.

But the person in the OP rang in sick for it! They could say could I take today as unpaid or got a couple of days of AL left, to use a day from that.

AliceMcK · 03/04/2025 09:08

I was very bad for this in my youth 😬 But my favourite which was me calling in sick for my very hungover flatmate, I’m not sure why but I told them she couldn’t come in because her goldfish died. I thought it was hilarious.

Auburngal · 03/04/2025 09:09

A tree blew over and blocked the road. Funny how I lived in the same village as this woman and I got to work?

AppleCelebration · 03/04/2025 09:11

I have definitely rang in sick still pissed from the night before. My colleagues were with me so it wasn’t like I could lie, I was deadly honest 🤣

I did the same two years ago but took it as annual leave. I never drank again 🤣

when I was younger my colleague called in sick because her hamster died. I took the phone call, it was rather difficult to decipher because she was seriously hysterical on the phone .

:-). That is brilliant! However she had to arrange the funeral and that takes time.....

I once got to work and realised I still had my slippers on. Didn't have sore feet the end of the day though.

Norma27 · 03/04/2025 09:13

I didn’t phone in sick for this and called a taxi originally.
on a teaching placement after giving birth.
I managed to throw both sets of car keys in the bin so couldn’t find them. Had called taxi to drop children and me where we all needed to go then searched bin and found one key. When I came home I searched bin again and found the other key.

'My girlfriends cat has died and she's really upset'

I worked in payroll for 10 years so I've heard them all but that made me laugh!

Oldandcobwebby · 03/04/2025 09:17

We had a bloke who didn't ring in sick, just failed to turn up.... He had placed a "man seeks woman" advert in the local Free Ads paper. She had tied him to the bed then went home and left him! Stylish!

I took 'called in sick' to simply mean "worst reasons why colleagues have been absent", sick just being a catch-all for absent.

Lorrymum · 03/04/2025 09:22

Cat was sitting on my knee while I was putting on mascara. I had to go to hospital after cat took a swipe at mascara wand and scratched my eye.

nonevernotever · 03/04/2025 09:22

I worked with someone once who came back and when filling in their sick form said "what's that word that means you can't be bothered. Begins with A?" We said Apathy? And they said"yes! That's what I had. How do you spell it?"

Heartofglass12345 · 03/04/2025 09:22

@Questionsquestions23thats the same as me only with porridge, I only had pants and a vest top on, made my porridge in the microwave and dropped it taking it out as the bowl was hot. It splashed down my legs and I ended up in minor injuries with blisters and had it dressed. Luckily I was only meant to be on training that day lol

ememem84 · 03/04/2025 09:23

Passport had been stolen the night before and it would take a couple of days to get a new emergency one to be able to fly home.

coincidentally said colleague was in London for the weekend and had asked the week before to extend her trip by a couple of days so she could see friends. Last minute holiday request was a no from her manager.

when she came back she had miraculously been able to track down the thief and got her passport back.

(we are in jersey so have to fly to London and need photo Id for the plane. She didn’t drive hence passport!)

whatapalarva · 03/04/2025 09:25

An ex employee called in sick because of a migraine, which is plausible, however, the next day she called in because she had been to a&e when a crochet needle slipped and punctured her kneecap. I don't get migraines but I am sure crocheting is quite a delicate process which no one with a migraine would even attempt to do?!

In one place I worked, a young colleague rang in to say that she couldn’t come in as she was really drunk.

Luckily for her, the manager saw the funny side and said “at least you’re honest”.

My mum did this, she had to ring work and say she wouldn't be coming in for her evening shift because she'd accidentally gotten steaming drunk at a party and was asleep in bed.

When I say "she" I mean me because I was the one who had to go pick her up from the party and take her home. When I saw her uniform hanging up in her room, I realised she was meant to be at work and had to ring them to say she wouldn't be there and why (she'd worked there for 20 years at that point and her manager just laughed).

I've got to go home, the scorpions escaped!
Her son had gone to feed it and realised it wasn't in its tank, they found it under the gog bed
