its getting me down, I’m completely unable to go to toilet. The only thing that works is dulcolax but that gives me a day of agonising diarrhoea.

I went to pharmacy, they suggested lactose- I’ve been taking it all week and nothing - I feel like I need to go but nothing is happening and I’ve been taking 30mls daily

Trying to avoid laxido as the taste makes me gag but is that literally the only thing left to try?

Prune juice used to work but not anymore 😭

OP posts:
ChocolatePeanutBrownie · 02/04/2025 21:18

Dulcoease and lots of water - much more gentle on your stomach than Ducolax and not a stimulate laxative.

Emmab321 · 02/04/2025 21:18

Warm fresh orange juice and kiwis would be my recommendation

Justtakeyourhandsoffmyshopping · 02/04/2025 21:19

Ring 101, you need medical help. Normally I'd say Kiwi, magnesium citrate tablets, real coffee, prunes in tins drink the juice too. However it's too late and you need medical help now. Good luck

Thank you, I’ve just ordered a bag. DH is getting annoyed as he’s trying to watch his volcano program and I’m laughing my head off at the Amazon reviews 😂😂 someone compared themselves to an agricultural muck spreader 🤣

Also crying with laughter. The comment about being a portal to another universe got me.

Tanktanktank · 02/04/2025 21:25

Kiwi fruit but you also need to eat the skin. It’s fine and it’s the skin fibre that makes it work.

also Califig. But don’t go far from the loo!

Flamingoknees · 02/04/2025 21:26

A pint of hot water every morning, then lots of fluids during the day.
Exercise is also very important.
I'm assuming you've addressed your diet.
Foot stool for your feet, when on the loo - or even squatting on the seat, if you are agile enough to do so safely.
Abdominal massage - research how to do this safely.
If you haven't seen your GP, please do so - you may need a specialist referral.
Once this episode is resolved, make sure you maintain good habits EVERY day.

raffegiraffe · 02/04/2025 21:28

Prunes ( full of fibre and they are coated in sorbitol as a preservative which is very laxative)
Water from the kettle and orange juice
High dose effervescent vit c tabs, the 1000mg ones

AxolotlEars · 02/04/2025 21:33

Prunes. Pureed and mixed with yogurt if you can't eat them whole

Mmmcheese89 · 02/04/2025 21:34

Sugar free sweets.

3 days post-op and too ill to go to the chemist. I'm normally like clockwork and go several times a day but the ketamine did a number on me. I ate a full packet of sweets with artificial sweeteners and chugged water. Popped like a cork but it worked.

ScaryM0nster · 02/04/2025 21:36

Get on the ERiC website and disimpaction.

Mix the laxido with strong squash.

And once properly cleared out, work on preventing reoccurrence.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/04/2025 21:39

Triple strength coffee (instant or posh stuff).
Liquorice
Handfuls of sultanas, raisins or currants.

Ilovemyshed · 02/04/2025 21:41

Mackerel and lots of water

WinterNightStars · 02/04/2025 21:56

Fybogel, apple juice, liquorice all work for me

SnowPinkLetters · 02/04/2025 21:57

Make a ground coffee, with water, and added milk, it seems to work for us.

Keep drinking and make sure you have plenty of fibre in your diet, a banana, wholemeal bread and vegetables.

SnowPinkLetters · 02/04/2025 21:58

But honestly real coffee, not instant.

Mistressofnone · 02/04/2025 22:22

Look on YouTube for Michelle Kenway. She is a physio and does a video of exercises to relieve constipation & IBS. Do them every few hours and they really do help get things moving.

Lavenderandbrown · 02/04/2025 22:28

It’s amazing how common severe constipation is. These have been mentioned but I want to reiterate

squatty potty is an absolute game changer Not any stool will work it has to do with the width your feet are apart in addition to straightening your colon. It felt weird initially now I have the damn thing in my guest bath and I don’t care who sees it

yes sorbitol…discovered this by accident by eating sugar free ice cream sandwiches Gummies and gum are quick discreet and portable

water all day

I use a product called miralax for maintence. It is not habit forming and I use it 3 times a week You have to find your dosing sweet spot

get ahead of OP I’m a medical provider and I swear I never heard prolapse in my ob gyn rotations. Prolapse is a very real concern for women and not unheard of in men. Please prevent this

it’s bizarre but recently I had constipation even having had normal significant bowl movement the day before…what I call the behind constipation …it’s behind a normal BM I’m a grown adult cant poo…miserable…walking around the house almost crying and I called my DD who said…what’s wrong and when I told her she said …how about I tell you a story… and sure enough I was able to relax and defecate. I would never do this with DH but my DD has problems at times too and hearing her voice shifted my focus enough to go. 2 tennis balls it felt like so as a result I recommend to people if you have a poo buddy this support altho gross and tmi to some people can really help if you are both comfortable with it

MeridaBrave · 02/04/2025 22:38

glycerin suppositories. Cut them in half and try half first.

TheMimsy · 02/04/2025 22:40

@BelloItalia could stress be a cause of the constipation? Maybe that’s why Italy was a poor haven?

how’s life/work/relationships aside from no 💩 on the horizon?

Can you do more walking? How do you relax? Do you get any ‘me’ time?

The sugar free sweets at Lidl till also work wonders for me.

Have you mapped your eating for a week or two to see macro levels and what fibre etc level is like? Fitness pal and Nutracheck are both good for that.

would trying a probitiic / kefir or something religiously for a week or two be worth trying?

Are you getting at least 2 litres a day?

personally for me it’s stress, diet or dehydration - what would you bet your last 50p on?

Monwmum · 02/04/2025 22:42

Psyllium Husk has been a game changer for me. Completely natural and works wonders..I mix it into my cereal as it's great in milk but you can put it in juice or water and drink it.

Obvnotthegolden · 02/04/2025 22:42

Coffee, licorice, figs, sultanas, dates

Live yoghurt?

Are you drinking a lot of water with the lactulose?

catscratcha · 02/04/2025 22:44

@BelloItalia try drinking 2-3 large glasses of warm water, one after the other, letting your bladder fill up, but don't empty it for as long as you can manage. Pace the room a bit too. The full bladder will give things a bit of a push from the inside.

IrritatedEarthling · 02/04/2025 22:46

Prune juice is never going to be as effective as the prunes themselves, the juicing process of any fruit leaves the bulky fibre behind. So start with some of them. Favour smoothies of anything over juice. Kiwis and bananas are also good but not as good, and apparently carrots are really high in fibre as is porridge.

So do yourself a breakfast of porridge mixed with mashed banana, a side of prunes, then elevenses of some kiwis and carrots with hummus (also good for fibre). Coffee is good for getting things moving too.

I read that supplement drinks etc are good but it's so much better to attack it with the food you eat as well.

toobigformyboobs · 02/04/2025 22:49

Try some bending and twisting. Gentle yoga type moves. It helps to nudge things along and can work quite quickly.
