its getting me down, I’m completely unable to go to toilet. The only thing that works is dulcolax but that gives me a day of agonising diarrhoea.

I went to pharmacy, they suggested lactose- I’ve been taking it all week and nothing - I feel like I need to go but nothing is happening and I’ve been taking 30mls daily

Trying to avoid laxido as the taste makes me gag but is that literally the only thing left to try?

Prune juice used to work but not anymore 😭

Go somewhere busy that’s far away from any loos. Wear white trousers.
Sometimes the only thing that works for me is the sheer panic of not being able to go to the loo! Then I just about manage to get home in time for the worlds biggest dump.

WoodyOwl · 02/04/2025 22:51

Curry, hot sauce, jalapeños, prunes... and lots if water.

AltitudeCheck · 02/04/2025 22:53

DulcoEase works for me. Less drastic than DulcoLax.

This yoga routine is good for keeping things moving;

If I need a drastic effect then a packet of the sugar free boiled sweets that they sell near the till in Lidl. Makes me very bloated though.

Op I'm on massively strong iron tablets too and they are really harsh on the system. To avoid getting constipated & to help my gut cope I have flaxseed on muesli for breakfast, and drinks kefir yoghurt. Plus fibre in diet and drink lots of water too.

Poor you. Hope it gets sorted. So uncomfortable.

Maybe it was olive oil in Italy? It's so good for everything maybe it's worth a try for you.

Newlyarrived101 · 02/04/2025 23:03

My DM was constipated for around 10 days after a medical issue (although she did take guidance from her GP during this time). She found that Optibac Bifido and fibre worked better than whatever the doctor prescribed. Maybe worth a go although obviously under medical supervision.

Also crying with laughter. The comment about being a portal to another universe got me.

Me too.... tears are rolling down my face..

Gymnopedie · 02/04/2025 23:06

OP if it's been a week you need a magnesium laxative, either good old Milk of Magnesia or a handful of magnesium citrate capsules.

Magnesium works by osmosis, it attracts water into the bowel. That does two things, it increases the volume in the bowel so that you simply have to go, and the water softens the old, impacted faeces so that they're easy to pass.

And because it doesn't cause the bowel to increase peristalsis (which is what Dulcolax and others do) it isn't habit forming and doesn't cause rebound problems.

ImBlindasabat · 02/04/2025 23:20

Magnesium tablets really work

Automaticforthepeople · 02/04/2025 23:21

Triphala is good. It’s a combination of three fruits. You can get it as a capsule or a powder to take in water.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 02/04/2025 23:21

Dried apricots or tinned pears along with their syrup.

CosmicScouser · 02/04/2025 23:43

Glycerol suppositories

On the shelf in Boots

Take out pack
Wet slightly under tap
Stick it up your backside. Make sure it's as far in as your finger will allow.
Leave it in for as long as you can wait. I think the pack says leave it in for 30mins. I try to leave it in for 2 hours if I can.
Stay lying down in bed the whole time.
Then, go the loo. Sit naked on toilet with feet up on the toilet seat and butt cheeks spread using the toilet seat if that makes sense.
If it doesn't do a complete job, repeat the next day.

That's what works for me on the horrible occasion I find myself constipated. It works pretty much instantly, with no stomach cramp side effects at all.

Ifyouhavetoask99 · 02/04/2025 23:58

I am similar and have tried every combination of every food/laxative/snake oil you could dream of.
last year tried Biomel which worked until it didn’t .
Now I’m having better success with Wild Dose for Blocked Bellies - I’m on my third month of taking two a night and they have worked wonders. Need to take plenty of water throughout the day.
stuff like senna, psyllium husk makes things worse for me.

I have IBS C, and note that if I’m in another country I can easily move bowels daily - I also thought it was the water.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 03/04/2025 00:07

Drinking at least a mugful of hot water with nothing in it, not even a herbal tea bag, can get the bowel moving. Have it as hot as you can comfortably swallow.
Gently massaging the area in front of the anus can help when you feel a turd is stuck there.

Ladymuck2022 · 03/04/2025 00:15

A little portion of sticky toffee pudding - check ingredients to make sure it has dates in, (but well least it is hidden!) with a little fresh fruit pineapple/raspberries/strawberries.

Anything with chilli’s in - be it pasta sauce or Tesco do a finest pizza with fresh chilli.

Luke warm water.

Baked beans on toast.

Bran flakes.

sprinkle of chia seeds or chilli flakes over food.

Gentle exercise. Maybe change the way you sit on the toilet.

Itiswhysofew · 03/04/2025 00:26

DM has diverticulitis and constipation drives her to distraction. GP told her that the longest he's known a patient not to open their bowels is just over 3 weeks, and that her 1 week was nothing to be alarmed about.

Hope you see movement very soon.

MateraBeara · 03/04/2025 00:34

Warm prune juice with a spoon of butter. A surgeon recommended this after I had 3 general anaesthetics in short succession and it…err… had immediate effects

Hope you find something that works as well for you

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 03/04/2025 00:35

You need fibre supplements

luna2025 · 03/04/2025 00:52

Bit of an odd one but tinned pears in juice (drink the juice out of it too) always help me (I am on iron tablets and codeine!)
If it doesn’t work hopefully you like pears so you’ve had a nice bit of not expensive fruit!

SnowFrogJelly · 03/04/2025 01:22

See the doctor?

Jumpingthruhoops · 03/04/2025 02:16

Fleur405 · 02/04/2025 20:15

Kiwi fruit!

I second this. A whole one. In the morning.

Generally you need to increase natural 'roughage' and increase your fluid intake to push your food through.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/04/2025 03:50

Guinness!

PoopingAllTheWay · 03/04/2025 03:56

A few big spoons Andrews

If that fails a few spoons of brown sugar in a tiny bit of hot water and then mixed with blackcurrant squash & water

sellotapechicken · 03/04/2025 04:23

Get some glycerin suppositories you need to help it from the bottom up too (pun intended)

Copperoliverbear · 03/04/2025 04:27

I’m afraid one laxido is the only thing that works for me, one a day or you can take two if you need to, you will get used to the taste, hold your nose.
you
