AIBU to find people who don’t read threads before commenting rude?

Aintnobodygottime · 02/04/2025 19:07

I don’t understand people who post on the sixth page of a thread and comment purely on the OP. It feels extremely rude. They often ask questions already answered at length, drag the conversation back from where it has naturally gone to, repeat misunderstanding, or just make a contribution that is pointless. Surely if you’re going to invest the time to post at all, you at least read the OP’s posts and the last few comments? Otherwise it comes across as just not caring and not really engaging, not to mention slightly odd to think that no one else might have made your basic point already.

It makes posting on long threads very frustrating to see the same things being said over and over.

I’m curious what the heck you get from dumping a comment without having at least read all the OPs posts and the last few for context. Why on Earth bother?

I already said further up i like the sound of my own voice if you actually read the whole thread you would know this

mysecretshame · 02/04/2025 19:57

RedHelenB · 02/04/2025 19:53

Yabu. Nor everyone has time to read an entire thread, so responding to the OP is justified. It's on the OP to make sure they include the relevant info.

Do you mean just the OP or all the posts by the OP?
Sometimes things move on and the OP has new information.

That’s not always possible. Threads can develop. The OP may have already cancelled the cheque, LTB, put an appropriate note of the CFs car or whatever by the time idiot opinionated user plonks down their now-irrelevant remark.

They should let me decide

Differentstarts · 02/04/2025 19:37

I wouldn't expect anyone to take anything seriously they read on the Internet and to answer your other question yes I do

The equivalent of standing on a table bellowing at an empty room then? 🙄

mysecretshame · 02/04/2025 20:00

Differentstarts · 02/04/2025 19:58

I'd vote for that. You might have to read some threads though.

TorroFerney · 02/04/2025 20:00

Aintnobodygottime · 02/04/2025 19:41

But you’ve wasted your time even commenting if you’re replying to the OP at the end of a long thread surely? Where’s the added value? What was the point?!

I'm not sure people are thinking "added value" when using mumsnet. As someone else said, it's not that deep and half the posts are made up/AI.

You can't police how people spend their time, you aren't the arbiter of what's an acceptable post!

I'd say rude is the wrong word, irritating perhaps.

Yeah, you’re not the OP so we’re all free to ignore you 😂

latetothefisting · 02/04/2025 20:02

Differentstarts · 02/04/2025 19:22

But i don't care about looking idiotic to randoms on the Internet

So what DO you care about?
As in, why do you care so much about a random post on the Internet that you bother to reply? You must understand if you are poster 300 on a thread that it is very likely whatever you are going to say has already been said somewhere in the previous 299 responses so what's the benefit to you, or anyone else in repeating it?

It just seems insanely arrogant when people are so eager to postulate their immense wisdom that they don't even bother to read the very first OP properly, let alone OPs subsequent posts! Half the time they answer a different scenario that they've made up in their heads, ask questions the OP has already answered or even contradict what OP has said.

There's a great example running atm
OP asked whether a certain outfit was currently fashionable but noted "of course I know I can wear whatever I want."
Cue tens of posters jumping on to tell her that it doesn't matter whether it's in fashion, she should wear what she likes.
WHY? What value does that add to anyone?
A) it's bleeding obvious anyway that nobody HAS to follow trends or risk death by execution, it doesn't even need saying and isn't what OP asked
B) just to be on the safe side Op DID say it
C) even if she hadnt multiple other people have already said it ahead of you

so many posters so eager to foghorn how individual and special they are by not following trends like all the other sheep they seem to miss the irony...!

But who would get to decide?

Maybe a moderator or AI could chose the first post that states a commonly repeated view as a "pick"?

For starters your post is to long, I'm not reading it but I did skim it. I care about getting to say my opinion whether someone chooses to listen to it or not is their business

Thepeopleversuswork · 02/04/2025 20:04

SallyD00lally · 02/04/2025 19:19

It takes a pretty arrogant person to assume their opinion hasn't already been stated repeatedly in 300 posts.

But the objective of a thread isn’t to generate a whole spectrum of new opinions… it’s a conversation and allows the OP to gauge public opinion l.

I understand that ideally people should read and digest the thread but honestly I rarely have time to read 600 comments. Life is like that, it’s messy and sometimes you don’t have the full picture: why should Mumsnet be different?

I can’t police other people’s behaviour, no. But I can dislike it and find it a bit puzzling.

Added value may be overstating it a little, I agree. But what’s the return? Why do it if it’s just typing something that is likely to either be totally repetitive at best?

OP posts:
latetothefisting · 02/04/2025 20:06

Ideal - read whole entire thread before commenting. Will likely find someone has already made the point you were going to make. Consider if you repeating it adds anything of value

Basic - read op's posts and the most recent to gauge the tone of the thread -i.e. has OP already cancelled the cheque 5 pages ago?

Bare minimum - read all the OPs posts so you know the full story before replying

Absolute bog standard shouldn't be allowed to post without- READ THE VERY FIRST OP PROPERLY don't just skim the title and make up the rest in your head

If an opinion is said in an empty room, can it ever be said to have existed, I wonder?

I just think it makes them look a bit thick - do they honestly think nobody else in 25 pages has come up with the blatantly obvious suggestion they have?

At least read all the posts from the OP, there's a bloody button for it!

Agreed. People look a bit stupid, especially after page 10!

How can they do that? Un less thetre are ime machines to the future how can you include on Monday things that are going to happen on Tuesday? If you respond on Wednesday having only read the OP you make yourself look foolish, how hard is it to do a see all?

I find it a bit puzzling that you care so much, its so easy to scroll past, its a bit bossy to tell others what to do

Yabu I'm not reading 300 comments to say my opinion. Op can choose to scroll past my comment if they choose

I don’t read all 300 comments but most from the top and use the filter option to see all OP updates. They usually give me all I need to know.

I will however sit there and read all 300 comments if the thread is particularly spicy 🌶️

I care because it so often renders otherwise interesting threads really tedious to read. And I do find it rude - MN feels to me like a place to come if you’re interested in other people. If too many people are just set on broadcast it makes the whole place less good for the rest of us.

Having said that, it’s not actually necessary to care enormously about something to start a thread on it, is it?

Exactly. Or the OP says ‘AIBU to have been cross with my DM?’
Lots of posts say ‘YABU’ and give reasons.
The OP says ‘OK, I’ve apologised and we’ve made up.’
People who’ve read all the OP’s posts say ‘Well done OP.’
People who could only be arsed to read the first post say ‘YABU’, give the no longer valid reasons and waste their own time by doing it.
Stupid and pointless.

Cancelthebreak · 02/04/2025 20:15

A thread should be a conversation, not a series of monologues. That can only be achieved if people actually read at least some of the previous comments.
