AIBU to find people who don’t read threads before commenting rude?

I don’t understand people who post on the sixth page of a thread and comment purely on the OP. It feels extremely rude. They often ask questions already answered at length, drag the conversation back from where it has naturally gone to, repeat misunderstanding, or just make a contribution that is pointless. Surely if you’re going to invest the time to post at all, you at least read the OP’s posts and the last few comments? Otherwise it comes across as just not caring and not really engaging, not to mention slightly odd to think that no one else might have made your basic point already.

It makes posting on long threads very frustrating to see the same things being said over and over.

I think they don't much care about adding to the conversation in a meaningful way, or care what other people have posted. They just type their piece and click away.

What’s the irony?

You’ve said the OP (and everyone else following the discussion presumably) can scroll past your comment if they like but doesn’t it feel a bit hollow to spend time posting something in a vacuum with any attempt to engage with the substance of the thread?

The irony is the poster I was replying to didn't read my comment properly

How much spare time do you have to read every comment written on mumsnet. I have 2 small children, a job, a partner and a life. Skimming is just fine

But you’ve wasted your time even commenting if you’re replying to the OP at the end of a long thread surely? Where’s the added value? What was the point?!

Don't add to the noise then if you don't have something informed to add. A 300 post thread would only be 200 if everyone read the thread. Not every single post but enough to get the general gist.

Because I don't need a reply or acknowledgement for what I post. Il say my thoughts and opinions and then its up to op if they want to read it and take it on board or not

It was me. And I did read your comment - I don’t think what I said is a particularly odd way to take your posts.

I can use mumsnet however i choose thankyou very much and so can others if they want to read every single comment and have a deep and meaningful conversation they can if I want to randomly comment my opinion I can. Mumsnet is for everyone. You don't get to dictate to people how they can and can't use it

Well obviously I mean if they are people who are actually interested in a thread and therefore reading it.Hmm

See this is how little notice I take i didn't even realise it was you 🤣🤣

Aintnobodygottime · 02/04/2025 19:46

I suppose we’re all different. I get no pleasure in reading an endless series of posts that aren’t interacting with each other. Internet forums are a type of community to me and that just reads as people shouting into space.

And that's OK for you i don't see it like that

Yabu I'm not reading 300 comments to say my opinion. Op can choose to scroll past my comment if they choose

So you consider your opinion so unique that it won't already have been posted ? The OP isn't going to know without reading your post that it's redundant so you're wasting your own time and hers.

I guess we all use forums differently though

No it probably has been posted multiple times but I don't see a problem with that it just means more then one person thinks what their suggesting is a good idea

But i don't need anything from it i don't get my validation or anything of the Internet i have real life friends and family. Like what do you get or need from the Internet. I'm not meaning that bitchy I'm generally curious

I don't read every comment. I doubt it would be possible for anyone to read every comment, but if I' am joining the conversation on any particular thread, then I do just as I would in a conversation - listen to what is going on before leaping in with an inane comment (as I have already said on this thread, so you are once again showing why it would have been helpful for you to have read the thread).

Aintnobodygottime · 02/04/2025 19:52

Conversation! Not validation at all. I also get that from my friends and family when I need it. I just like talking to people, which means reacting to what they are posting, and reading interesting exchanges.

It’s often not a good idea, more often than not it’s a sarky comment. Or quite often by the time idiot user wades in when there’s already hundreds of posts, the OP has already done whatever it is (as in the infamous ‘cancel the cheque’ debacle)

RedHelenB · 02/04/2025 19:53

Yabu. Nor everyone has time to read an entire thread, so responding to the OP is justified. It's on the OP to make sure they include the relevant info.

But so often the OP is only the start of the conversation? How can a single first post summarise it all? Why not at least read the OP’s posts so you know where things have got to?

Perhaps a Guardian style (minus any agenda) MumsNet pick of the most salient posts might help on long threads?

I’m curious what the heck you get from dumping a comment without having at least read all the OPs posts and the last few for context. Why on Earth bother?
