Someone should have told me I could do this before now

I recently visited McDonald's with my clearly more knowledgeable kids and watched them order burgers stripped down of everything bar the burger, bun and ketchup. But then I noticed there was a plus sign to add on as well as a minus to remove.

This was even where there were already onions and pickles on the burger so it means you can have EXTRA onions and pickles to the ones already included.

Why did I not know this? My mate who was with us did not know either which makes me feel a bit better but how long have I been missing this trick???

Am I being unreasonable to think my kids should really know they need to tell me these things

In the happy meal burgers you can add cucumber which is a really good combo imo - I really wish you could do that to burgers without having to order a happy meal!!

purplecorkheart · 02/04/2025 16:06

I wonder does it vary between country and branch. Recently went to McDonalds (only option available at the time to answer the food police). I got a hamburger and was delighted to be able to remove the tomato sauce and get mustard instead but could only add 1 extra pickle and 1 extra onion on the screen. I did also order one sweet and sour packet and got two of those and three barbecue sauce.

YABVU to want pickles.

If yours are going spare, I'll have them 👍

I didn't know this either! Is this using the screen in the store? Presume you can't face to face? Saying that, not many maccies have face to face ordering now.

They all have it. There's nowhere that is screen only.

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 02/04/2025 16:10

Both my older boys worked in MacDonald’s while at university so I thought I was pretty “up” on the menu but I didn’t know that either.

Yabu I couldn't possibly manage extra items, I'm already full after merely inhaling the aroma from outside.

You inhale?! Tisk. I am full at the very thought. I shan't eat my big salad now.

My son has just come in and I've tried telling him all the tips I've learned off here today and he has totally deflated me - he knew every one and when I tried to tell him the chicken select tip he interrupted me and told me what I was about to tell him 😂

Hear hear! Is it too much to think we all might be able to live without this American crap while their administration is bullying the rest of the world?

Tugsfh · 02/04/2025 16:24

Boycott McDonalds

WindyWendyHouse · 02/04/2025 16:27

This always gets cocked up for me.

I can't eat onions but love pickles so always ask for no onions and extra pickles. Often comes out with no pickles and extra onions. I can't tolerate cheese either and my last order came out with no onion and extra pickles - yay! but a cheese slice melted on both sides of the burger - wtaf, I hadn't even asked for cheese.

All I recall is that when the children were young, 30+ years ago, if one ordered a burger without the bits then the wait was far longer but they wouldn't order and remove the bits they didn't want! Is filet'o'fish still the slowest thing to order, if they still do it? Used to take ages, wherever in the world you were!

Shitmonger · 02/04/2025 16:30

It has actually blown my mind that people didn’t know that you could remove or add extra at fast food places. Did they think they just had to have the default with no choices?

I’ve been asking for tomato on things since I was a child because I’ve always bloody loved tomato. 😂

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 02/04/2025 16:32

I get 2x extra pickles as I have a problem 😂.

BashfulClam · 02/04/2025 16:36

Yeah I know about this, DH always get his burgers plain and even get a 1/4 pounder with cheese without cheese as he likes the bigger burger. I once asked why he doesn’t just remove the things he doesn’t like he said ‘‘it’s made specially so it’s fresh and I know it hasn’t been sitting for a while!’

GasPanic · 02/04/2025 16:39

Wasn't there a giant advertising campaign at some point with the slogan, "Have it your way", which most intelligent people would presume means you can have the burger any way you want.

Which I would guess includes extra onions and pickles.

That was Burger King 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wonderwall23 · 02/04/2025 16:50

I know I'm about to be such a bah humbug but actually I don't really like this. The Mcdonalds brand is built on the premise that it's standardised, efficient and predictable...sorry to be a geek but 'Mcdonaldization' is even a sociological concept that's used to emphasises these things and how they've expanded throughout society!

If you start faffing around with bespoke orders it negates all this. Now I'm thinking this is why the service is always so slow! Mcdonalds items should 'be what they are' IMO with no pandering to fussiness! Luckily for everyone else I'm aware my opinion doesn't matter.

Lol, they make them all to order anyway....

NetflicksAndSleep · 02/04/2025 16:51

I’ve known this for ages but only because my DP hates cheese so depending on what he orders we have to remove it. And my DS has to have everything plain.

clary · 02/04/2025 17:03

Tell him none of them have been sitting for a while!

(on a mission here!)

Just here from Thailand to confirm they still do those 😁

They do some great stuff. At the moment they have a "cheesy" burger which is like a cross between a big mac and a cheeseburger with a really yummy sauce.

Oh and don't get me started on the banoffee pies. Basically the apple pie, but banoffee flavour 🤤

Awesome! Yeah Thai maccers is superior. I love their spicy nuggets! They brought them out here but only for about a month five years ago!
My mate once bought two double fillets and took off one bun and put it together to make quadruple fish burger! 🥰🤣 X

They used to sit years ago and he prefers it plain anyway.
