In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

A horse for my DD.

Currently in for about £10k what with buying him, saddle, rugs etc.

Worst part is she scared of him and won't even ride him 🤬

Sell it on again?

I bought a shark carpet shampooer on Amazon . I’m 3 months in to the five months interest free payments. It’s still in the box in the utility. It irritates me every time I walk past it.

Mine's in the garage and it irritates me!

I've never understood that stereotypical thing you see in movies where poor people are pocketing the silver knives and forks in fancy houses. I've always thought "what's the point, how much can they really be worth? And who would you sell them to?" I guess I was wrong and the right set are worth it 😄

I bought that lumea hair laser zapper thing for about £500 and have never really used it. That one bothers me.

Use it! It is freaking amazing to not have to shave anything anymore. My hairs have started to grow back now after five years, so I have been using the machine again. But I don't want to have to think about shaving come summer ⛱️ 🌞 Also you need to do it before your hair turns white because the laser doesn't work on white hair.
My machine is a Veet.

Not me as I absolutely don’t do this kind of thing. DH bought me a limited edition Montblanc fountain pen for my birthday last year which cost a grand. We absolutely can afford it, I have always coveted a MB fountain pen, and it is a thing of beauty that was even sent away to Germany to replace the nib with a broad one as I had always expressed a preference for a broad nib.

A wonderful gift and gesture, but it just seems so expensive and unnecessary. I don’t use it as I don’t want to lose it. Ridiculous.

£300 on a (replica) Victorian dress for a murder mystery party! No one else dressed up, so it was both an expensive and embarrassing mistake!! It's sitting in my wardrobe sneering at me! I would like to sell it to recoup some of the money, but no-one would actually want to buy it, because fashion has moved on since the 1860s!!

Could you try some theatrical companies or costume departments? They might be interested.

For me it's been house renovations. They're long overdue and could have been done years back when my DH got an inheritance, but other than buying himself a fancy car, he refused to spend any of it. He died last year, only 60, so I'm now using some of that money. Been £10k on a shower room and £20k on the main bathroom (both right back to the brickwork), but they look gorgeous now and I'm very happy with the work. Part of me thinks I should be careful and make the money last, but another part of me thinks (having lost DH young) that tomorrow isn't guaranteed, so get some things done and enjoy them.

Hdjdb42 · 31/03/2025 07:45

You can always make more money. Just put it down as a lesson learned! We've all done it! Once I spent a whole month's wages on 2 pairs of shoes! Ended up returning one, and wearing the other to death for years!

OP, yes it’s an Asprey set. They were a client of mine and we did get a discount….but still! For about 5 years every birthday/Christmas we’d buy each other a set of fish knives, or a set of teaspoons etc. Not something we’d waste that sort of money on now, but they are very lovely.

I think that's gorgeous. Every day joy.

I have specialist wardrobe insurance as my clothes are worth around 300k.

They bring me so much happiness.

When I started as a driving instructor in the early 2000s, I thought I would be high tech, and make videos illustrating how to reverse park. This was before the era of ipads, and the nearest thing available was a sat nav which doubled as a hand-held computer. I spent a lot of money on one, but I found it so difficult to use, that I did not even use it as a sat nav. I think I still have it buried somewhere, as I couldn't bring myself to try and sell it on.

In the end, I took photos showing what the view should look like at various stages of parking, which was far more hi tech than the way most of my colleagues explained it.

Blankscreen · 31/03/2025 08:04

Yep we have advertised him as they're not a good match.

Sadly all the ones I've seen that possibly more suitable are another £3-5k which I really don't have

If anyone wants to borrow my £4k dressage saddle just let me know.
Waited 13 weeks for delivery, pulled the best dressed horse out of the stable, hopping lame. He’s now on 3 months box rest. Saddle has never been sat on.

I’ve now got my eye on a £20k dressage horse - I haven’t got £20k, and I can’t really do dressage either. Sounds a bargain tho compared to some cutlery.

edwinbear · 31/03/2025 00:38

@80smonster wine glasses are from IKEA!

Really? The last time I bought wine glasses from that Swedish boutique, half were smashed by the time I got home.

Roselilly36 · 31/03/2025 08:19

Puts my view of overspending in touch, took me a while yesterday to get over spending £15 on a trifle in M&S Foodhall yesterday! Still cant believe I spent £15 on a trifle!

Bikergran · 31/03/2025 08:28

SqueakyDinosaur · 30/03/2025 20:28

Mid wife crisis is the best typo!!

I have silver cutlery, because for some reason we found 3 sets in my grandfather's attic when we cleared his house. I don't think it's worth anything like £20k, so I am intrigued by this set and really want to know what it is!

Do you mean silver-plated cutlery, or solid silver cutlery? Huge difference in value. Most plated stuff, even in its box, is only worth a few pounds, you see a lot in charity shops. Solid silver, unless it's by a special maker like Tiffany or Aspreys, or antique, is worth a bit more than the scrap value of the weight of silver. Just because someone paid £20K retail price doesn't mean that is the resale value.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 31/03/2025 08:32

This is making the £8 I spent on a vinted coat which doesn't fit me and will have to be re-sold look like piddling small fry, thank you 😊 I was telling myself off for buying it, but no longer!

Icanttakethisanymore · 31/03/2025 08:34

EllieQ · 30/03/2025 21:36

Do you mean she replaced one grey horse with another and her husband didn’t realise? Or am I reading that wrong 😄

Yes exactly - they got increasingly expensive and he had no idea!

Tupperwarelid · 31/03/2025 08:36

I spent £1500 on a handbag that looked amazing online but it's really heavy even when empty and I can't put it over my shoulder or carry it by the handle as it's such a stupid shape. I used it for about two days and now it's wrapped in it's bag in the bottom of the wardrobe never to be seen again.

Bikergran · 31/03/2025 08:38

I honestly can't think of many things I regret buying, but there are a handful of things I regret NOT buying, when I could have (just) afforded them, but was being "sensible". A massive natural aquamarine ring when I was a student (would be worth a fortune nowadays), a millinery business when I was offered it by the owner, who would have trained me as part of the deal, a stunning black tailored jacket in TKMaxx which would have been fantastic with any outfit and made me look a stone lighter - by the time I reconsidered and went back, it had gone. I once spent what was 2 weeks budget on a pair of high-heeled Italian leather boots, which I subsequently wore with almost any outfit for YEARS, on a price per wear basis it must have been the best value footwear I've ever owned.

BeaAndBen · 31/03/2025 08:50

There’s definitely a common theme of grief reactions!

I blew £2k I couldn’t really afford in the year after my mum died - a MacBook, a robot hoover that is totally useless because it keeps getting jammed under furniture, that sort of thing.

@WhyDidIDiddle enjoy your marvellous loafers!

Neveranynamesleft · 31/03/2025 08:51

@Tupperwarelid

You could try Vinted to get some of your money back ? Better than it being sat there doing nothing.

Ariela · 31/03/2025 08:52

Sorry for your loss. I think it's a comfort thing. I bought a really posh frying pan when a close relative died. It's actually brought me great joy, a Woll one, and it's still going strong nearly 10 years later. Had I bought yet another cheapie I'm quite sure I'd be on at least my 5th. So actually I'm thinking it was a wise investment and I always think of said relative with fondness when cooking with it.

So my advice is enjoy those shoes, and as my Jewish friend would say 'Wear them in good health!'

Goatinthegarden · 31/03/2025 08:56

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread.

I don’t have children and so have a bit of a mentality that I don’t need to save for anything other than a decent retirement. I do however squander money on my ‘hobbies’. I have lots of hobbies, and quietly chuck a large percentage of my wage on sports gear and art materials that I don’t really need…then I feel a bit guilty about the decadence of it all (not that it stops me).

Now I’ve read this thread, I just wish everyone could have a little bit of careless squandering.

This thread has some wonderful stories. I'd love some fancy cutlery. It's nice to treat yourself. If you enjoy the experience/item then I don't think the money went to waste. I have some beautiful bags and shoes that I had to save for but I don't regret it. I use them often and with care. They bring me joy.

I did panic buy a dress though that makes me sad. In a designer closing down sale where there was no chance to try it on. The rack I got it from was for my size but the dress was a size down. I realised in the line to pay but there were none left when I tried to swap for the size up. When I tried it on at home it was really tiny at the waist, the zip wouldn't come close to doing up. And then taking it off it I got stuck and ripped it! I spent about £500 on a dress no one will ever wear! It's very pretty but what a waste. I wish I'd never bothered.

@Hysterectomynext 👋(waves her size 4's at you.😆) I know just how you feel!

@Elaine118

A good seamstress can probably put in a side panel for you. My sister has revived the dresses of her youth like this.
