To take DD 5 to McDonald's every other weekend?

She's gluten free, so has a portion of small chips and either a small mcflurry or orange juice or sauce with the chips.

We go after swimming.

This is ok, right? My friend thinks it's awful that she goes twice a month. But it's not like she's having the processed bread and cheese and stuff all the time?

I wouldn’t want my child to get a taste for that type of processed food. It’s junk.

So what are you going to do when your children are teenagers and you lose control of what they eat then?

The more people say things like "Its bad parenting" or "This will set DD up with bad habits" - the more I think these posters have incredibly unhealthy relationships with food.

Yes, they are bonkers. You asked if it was OK to have chips and ice cream once a fortnight, not whether you're a bad parent. Which you are not. Her usual diet looks fine.

Yeah their tagline should be "Our food is crap but you wont be worried if your friends see you here!"

Ilovelurchers · 28/03/2025 23:24

i'd go further and say that making her choose between sauce or a drink or ice cream seems a bit harsh. I would have allowed my daughter all three of these. She'll twelve now and eats an extremely healthy diet.

I don't think there is any evidence that massively repressive parenting breeds adult who make good choices. In fact I think the opposite tends to be true. This genuinely is no problem OP - your friend sounds unpleasantly judgemental.

“Parents should always carry enough life insurance to sustain their families if they die. Can't afford the rates, can't afford the family.”

This is what you said. Anyone who can’t afford life insurance can’t afford children. You never said people who can’t afford life insurance will need to find another way to secure their children’s future, you said if they can’t afford life insurance they shouldn’t have children.

Honestly, the lack of reading comprehension among the British public is concerning.

Do you really not see the difference between people who could qualify for life insurance but can’t YET afford it, and therefore should postpone procreation, vs people who through no fault of their own will never qualify and therefore should postpone until they find some other way to secure their child’s future should they die? Be it an appointed guardian or substantial savings or other means.

The point is that no one should be producing human beings without significant contingency planning. Yet sadly, so many irresponsible people do, and then (while expecting the taxpayers to support them) claim they are victims of fate rather than of their own poor choices.

The adults in the room understand exactly what I mean.

I dont think YOU understand what you are saying!

You are saying that only those with the means to provide contingencies such as insurance etc should have kids. So within 2 generations you have a society where no one is emptying the bins or stacking the shelves or cleaning your perfectly prepared kids loos. So society collapses.

Then society resets and all the parents who paid a fortune for their kids education will see their grandkids as car park attendants or carers because a degree and a masters has no meaning when there is no one to do the grunt work. There is no money to invest in the City, as no one has any. The country is bankrupt with no exports, as there are not enough factory workers.

You can be as self congratulatory as you want, but the simple fact is your life is supported by all of those below you. Without them, you wouldnt be able to live the life you do.

You can try and deflect all you like with your insults. The adults in the room can see right through it.

The problem is not my reading comprehension. I can only comprehend what you actually wrote which was “Parents should always carry enough life insurance to sustain their families if they die. Can't afford the rates, can't afford the family.” You may be backtracking now with your post above but that is not what you originally said. “Parents should ALWAYS carry enough life insurance to sustain their families if they die”. Maybe the problem isn’t the British public’s reading comprehension but actually your inability to articulate fully ( giving you the benefit of the doubt on the above post ).

Dont some people suck all the joy out of parenting

They suck all the joy out of life I think.

DrPrunesqualer · 29/03/2025 00:28

Mc Donald’s definitely sucks the joy out of life.
There are known serious welfare standards amongst the animals they use. Here’s those chickens in those ‘healthy’ nuggets

This has to be the most batshit thread ever, parents being berated for not regularly feeding their children McDonalds 🤣 What next, call social services if you don't force at least one hour of screen time a day on your kids 😂😂😂

That's in the US. Do you have recent data to show the UK McDonalds have serious welfare issues?
Posters aren't berating others for not giving their children McDonalds, it's the over reaction to a child eating potatoes and ice-cream. It has always been traditional to get chips after swimming. They were 16p a portion when I was a lass (and it was all fields around here).

No one is berating parents for nor regularly feeding their child McDonald's. It's the massive over reaction that the world will end if a child has McDonald's once every other week.

Dont be ridiculous.

All that is being said is that its not utterly shit parenting to take your hungry child for a small bag of fries and an ice cream after a swimming lesson. Feeding a hungry child is NEVER wrong. Ok so sometimes it isnt the optimal fresh home cooked food that would be best, but fed is better than hungry.

And as I posted above, having looked into the ingredients of the food we sell in the family food pub I currently work in and the same for McD's, McD's wins hands down! I bought some expensive Aberdeen Angus burgers earlier to cook for DD tomorrow and it turns out that McD's are better than those too!
