Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

In a way I think YANBU but I can’t comprehend not locking doors. My door just locks automatically when you close it, it isn’t even a conscious decision. I had a delivery driver quite recently knock and then attempt to open the door before I could get to it, but obviously they were unable to get in.

celticprincess · 26/03/2025 18:29

Yep my Royal Mail post man, Evri delivery driver and Amazon drivers all do this. Luckily I have a porch so they drop in to that. Some of my neighbours lock their porch into their house but leave the front door unlocked even when they’re out, so that deliveries can be left inside.

Suggestion is to definitely lock your door.

Spidey66 · 26/03/2025 18:30

My front door needs to be physically locked. Obviously we lock it at night or when we're both out, but often leave it unlocked during the day if we're in. We moved to small town Somerset from London where we wouldn't have done this at all! We're in rented so can't change the locks but could of course lock it from inside.

Of course delivery drivers shouldn't enter without permission, regardless of whether your door is locked or not.

Why is it OK for the postman but not the delivery driver?

Because she knows her postie I would imagine.

This happened to me too! Opened my front door and put it on my hall stairs

They must have opened the door very violently, if they had to leave it on the stairs afterwards.

UmberBear · 26/03/2025 18:33

You’ve just experienced crime with a trespasser so I’d suggest that you make sure you lock your doors.

NinjaFurtive · 26/03/2025 18:33

I've lived in villages, in nice areas for most of my life.

Opportunistic thieves are everywhere. I can't fathom people not locking doors because they're home, being scared when someone comes in but still steadfastly refusing to accept doors should be locked.

AthWat · 26/03/2025 18:34

If I were a delivery driver and a door was left unlocked I might assume it had been left unlocked deliberately so I could drop the package inside, because I wouldn't think anyone would leave their door unlocked unless they wanted people to open it.

Heroyamslava · 26/03/2025 18:37

Live in a village , and the Evri / Hermes / Royal Mail very often come in the front door and photo a parcel on the threshold - have nothing worth stealing , and it really only is in the warped fantasy world of Daily Mail nazis' imagination ... that axe murderers regularily wander West Somerset cutting off old ladies' heads .... Indeed statistically ( ' white middle classs' mummy-net- ) women ( of any age 2 -112 ) are far safer in British Society than any other group of people are . . ..much safer than any man is men .. Why on earth would Hermes driver bother to ravage or burglarize you ? They have a HORRIBLE job with far too much work to do .

You need to keep your doors locked

The OP just doesn’t get it!

Attempted to jeopardise his job? Are you serious?

Yes, I love rurally - a tiny village without crime.

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?

You should probably check your home insurance, if they would pay out if you kept the door unlocked. Regardless of a crimeless village, most home insurance providers would wriggle out of paying if something in your home was stolen due to an unlocked door.

My brother lived in the Outer Hebrides for a few years and it was considered bad manners to lock your door and the postman always brought the mail in

Yes, can confirm this is accurate. Hereabouts it’s hard to get any privacy even in your own home, but it’s extremely safe!

Oldtigernidster · 26/03/2025 18:42

I’m in a village. That wouldn’t overly bother me .

Heroyamslava · 26/03/2025 18:42

soo00rrrry , have to add that the last such slaughter on Exmoor DID indeed occur in October 1975 at Porlock , when an assassin shot dead Norman Scott's dog .. .. . . .

Got this from online:

In the United Kingdom, home insurance policies typically require homeowners to take reasonable precautions to secure their property. This includes locking all doors and windows when the house is unoccupied. Failure to do so can result in claims being denied if a burglary occurs.

However, the requirements when you are inside the house can vary between insurance providers. Some insurers may stipulate that doors should remain locked even when the home is occupied, while others may not have such a condition. It’s essential to review your specific policy documents or contact your insurer directly to understand their requirements.

To ensure coverage in the event of a theft, it’s advisable to keep doors and windows locked at all times, regardless of whether you are at home or away. This practice not only enhances your security but also helps in maintaining the validity of your insurance coverage.

lazycats · 26/03/2025 18:42

YABVU for not locking your door if you care about this. I suggest you do so in future.

Chenecinquantecinq · 26/03/2025 18:43

I leave back door unlocked and yes regularly drivers will pop parcel inside if i don't answer. I am actually grateful. If you are that nervous lock your door. Can't believe you complained.

Nodancingshoes · 26/03/2025 18:46

If I don't lock my porch door (which is actually my front door) delivery drivers always do this. A woman once wandered through asking where number 21 was too. I always try to remember to lock it now

Hermyknee · 26/03/2025 18:47

In summer we have the back door and front door wide open to create a cooling through draft.

Yep, I live in the Hebrides, postie always brings the packages in. Our doors are only locked at night or if we both go out.

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

My mum lives in a village with next to no crime. A thief walked in and took her car jays, drive her car for a few days (she had a full tank) then burned it out. He was caught on cameras and wasn’t known as a village resident so don’t assume someone from outside your area can’t decide to see what the can steal. Both my mum and brother were in the house at the time.

notacooldad · 26/03/2025 18:49

I'm surprised at how many people don't have Yale locks on their front door! And the fact those people don't lock their front door?!
Once I'm up and about and in the house I never lock the front door.
Delivery people normally open the front door and leave items in the vestibule.

Mamabear487 · 26/03/2025 18:50

Lock your door??

That makes no sense - why would you (or anyone) have the cheek to TRY the door?

What gives you the right to check it?
