Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

I’m thinking this is a spoof post 🙄

VerySkilledFirefighter · 26/03/2025 17:57

If my door was unlocked I’d actually be okay with this if I was on a call or something - but I have a porch, and keep my door locked 99% of the time so this doesn’t happen.

What’s the point of having the door unlocked if it’s not for people to open it…

Sausagehead · 26/03/2025 17:57

Its not acceptable but you really should lock your door for safety. When my boyfriend was young his neighbour was raped by someone who just walked in through the open back door. They lived in a nice area and her husband was a solicitor. Better to be safe than sorry.

This happened to me too! Opened my front door and put it on my hall stairs

CommonAsMucklowe · 26/03/2025 18:00

OP posts and doesn't like people telling her to lock her door, I despair. Why post if you don't want another opinion. How very MN.

Laurmolonlabe · 26/03/2025 18:00

Always have your door locked- have an intercom so you can tell the driver you are on your way.
As a nervy person who was terrified by this, lock your doors, always- if it's quicker delivery people will do whatever, it's your responsibility to ensure it can't happen.

SoftPillow · 26/03/2025 18:00

I don’t lock my doors in the daytime when I’m in.

I also wouldn’t expect a delivery driver to let themselves in.

Lollipop81 · 26/03/2025 18:01

Well according to Mumsnet it is clearly your fault for leaving your door open 🤣🤣
OP of course delivery drivers shouldn’t come into your house, absolutely under no circumstances regardless of whether the door is open or not. I usually always lock my door, but on the odd occasion it is left open as I am bringing shopping in or similar I certainly wouldn’t expect a delivery driver to come into my home. Not acceptable, and the delivery company should be telling their drivers this, if they don’t have the common sense to know that already.

dysongirl · 26/03/2025 18:02

Emmmmm lock your door as most normal people do😁

AzurePanda · 26/03/2025 18:02

This has happened to me a number of times with couriers and I hate it and find it very upsetting. We live rurally and have 4 dogs so constantly need to let them in and out and locking the door would be a faff. I would never in a million years just walk into someone else’s house.

1girlAND2boysDad · 26/03/2025 18:02

As an ex delivery driver this is absolutely the biggest no no you could commit.

You done the right thing by telling the company. However, personally I think that you should be taking it higher with said company till you get your desired outcome especially as this has caused you distress in you own home (even if you feel it hasn't or in deed hasn't - they don't know this). Also mention it to the company that you ordered from (if separate to the delivery company) as this will escalate the situation and put more pressure on the delivery company to rectify the issue. Further don't be afraid to present your evidence too them if they start to question or doubt you.

Laura95167 · 26/03/2025 18:04

I'd escalate this complaint. It's not normal.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 26/03/2025 18:08

Seriously? You think leaving your door unlocked means strangers have the right to just walk in?!

I generally lock my door but occasionally I unlock it if I'm expecting family or friends. That doesn't mean just anyone has the right to walk in. I did once have a delivery driver walk in (in fact, there were two of them for some reason) and I complained to the company. They apologised and said it was against company policy. Rightly so.

MeandT · 26/03/2025 18:10

Yep, joining in to be the 400 and n-th person to say that if
"i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?"

and your door was unlocked, the answer to How? is that they entered through the unlocked door. Hardly rocket science.

If you're going to be terrified by a stranger entering your home, definitely use the existing facility you have to prevent terrifying strangers from entering it & turn the lock.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Poor training. Mind you where I live the delivery people seem mostly foreign.

PorridgeEater · 26/03/2025 18:15

I thought it was normal to close front door behind you. As others have said, close the door if you do not want a stranger coming in to your house.

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:22

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

Why were you worried then? Lock your door.

LT1233 · 26/03/2025 18:22

These kind of threads make me laugh (not at you OP), but because most people can't imagine the opposite of however they live their home lives. I live North Manchester and my husband literally has to lecture my kids on the daily about why they shouldn't leave the front door unlocked after they exit (I'm in) & enter the house (they don't care, nor do they have access or interest to/in Facebook/Nextdoor app pages where in plain sight scoundrels (lol) walk in your gaff, nab your car keys and leave you with a world of pain) but we go to my mums in a town in Wales and when she's not in, we just let ourselves in by my husband climbing the wall ladder and getting in through the first floor kitchen door that is always literally propped WIDE open. One time in a different North Manchester house, I heard drama out the front and opened my door to fully nosey what was happening, and some guy who was bleeding profusely ran in my house and hid (eventually with a gun) for the next 3 hours. Basically, some places you don't ever leave your door unlocked or open for more than a couple of seconds, or other places it's fine, nobody cares and everyone's cool. But the fact of the matter is that nobody unknown should be letting themselves into your house, irrelevant whether the door is unlocked or not. I'd 100% be complaining about some dick letting himself in my house, even if it was with something I wanted/paid for.

Ladysmirnoff1 · 26/03/2025 18:22

I've looked my doors for years now. You never know whose put there. It's a safety measure.

CWigtownshire · 26/03/2025 18:23

All the delivery drivers do that where I live, even Royal Mail. Not a problem, everyone I knew appreciates it - better than leaving it on the doorstep for all to see. Easy answer - lock your door!

BadBones60 · 26/03/2025 18:24

Voted yabu as if terrified to find a stranger in house seems strange not to lock door - an opportunist thief doesn't usually follow social niceties

ChoChang1 · 26/03/2025 18:24

I have a side door into my kitchen. I’d not realised it was unlocked (also rural very low crime) and gone out. Amazon driver opened the door, which had stuff stored against it, knocked the lot over, hit the open dishwasher blocking it fully opening and left the parcel in the dishwasher. Even had the cheek to take a picture of it with his hand on the door handle in the pic still and upload it 🤣

ScartlettSole · 26/03/2025 18:25

Most delivery drivers do this to me, much prefer they shove it in the door than leave a card and have the faff of redelivery or having to go collect it from somewhere.

MrsAmaretto · 26/03/2025 18:26

Perhaps he tried your door and assumed there would be a porch to leave the parcel in?

I don’t get why you’re happy with the postie doing it but not a courier driver?? You have no idea if your postie has called in sick or change route and your getting a different postie?

I get not leaving the door locked (I live in Shetland) but YABU for only being upset if it’s a man not in a Royal Mail uniform!!

Tell me you don’t live in London without telling me you don’t live in London 😂 I lock double lock the front door after me when I get inside and back doors are locked at all times unless I’ve got the French doors open in the summer. None of our windows open beyond an extender apart from on the second floor and even then I wouldn’t leave them open if I went out. It’s another world!

Me too! Londoner here and wouldn’t even dream of not locking my door!
