‘Morning all
My teen has an English assignment and I’d love to hear your song choices (the assignment is for English but with a music theme!). I thought about The Drugs Don’t Work by the Verve, but I’m not sure. Ideally it would be quite a ‘meaty’ song so that we can really analyse the lyrics!
Thanks very much Smile

Maybe ‘All Apologies’ by Nirvana? It’s an apology for being himself and touches on his addictions, suicide attempts etc It has plenty of language devices you can analyse too. Or some My Chemical Romance (maybe ‘The Light Behind Your Eyes’ which Gerard Way wrote for his daughter after he’d relapsed in case he ended up dying and leaving her alone.

Pretty much anything by Pulp would fit the brief and give you plenty to work with. That Jarv can write. Sounds like a fun assignment!

Latenightreader · 24/03/2025 09:55

Divine Comedy songs have some amazing lyrics - Sunrise is about the Irish troubles, you may also find Generation Sex works for the assignment, although lots of 90s references you may need to explain to a teen!

Simon & Garfunkel A Most Peculiar Man - people dismissing someone as odd who ends up killing himself, and Richard Cory on similar lines. The lesson for both being that assumptions are made about people but you don't know what is going on inside their head. Paul Simon is my favourite lyricist.

tropicalroses · 24/03/2025 10:28

Some of the folk stuff, whilst not cool, could be quite fun and give quite a lot of content and make it quite easy - Pound a Week Rise by Siobhan Miller for example

JMSA · 24/03/2025 10:30

Thank you all so much. At work but will read properly in a bit.

The fray....how to save a life maybe?? Always seems to have a good story line for the song

Hurt jonny cash

While Johnny Cash did an amazing cover of the song, Hurt is by Nine Inch Nails.

worrisomeasset · 24/03/2025 10:57

We never got to do anything as interesting as this in English when I was at school. It felt like it was all bloody DH Lawrence (yawn).

There’s always Heroin by the Velvet Underground if you want to go with the drugs theme. It does what it says on the tin.

A whole book has been written about Wichita Lineman so it would be a good choice in the love song category.
