Please could you help with song choices for an English assessment

‘Morning all
My teen has an English assignment and I’d love to hear your song choices (the assignment is for English but with a music theme!). I thought about The Drugs Don’t Work by the Verve, but I’m not sure. Ideally it would be quite a ‘meaty’ song so that we can really analyse the lyrics!
Thanks very much Smile

I came here to suggest The Divine Comedy but I am paused as they’re my favourite band!! I worked a lot of song quotes into my GCSE creative writing exam 🤣

Sunrise is beautiful about the troubles or maybe Certainty of Chance or Charge that last one’s a bit obscure though!!

I did a year long module about 14th century Italian religion at uni because of my love for the Divine Comedy (the band).

The majority of song choices scream 'parents helped'. You need DD to choose something that resonates with her, and I bet it is current, not decades old

Meh, lots of teenagers like older music. I certainly did.

If you want a singer that is contemporary
listen to Sofia isella. Very talented and very dark!

I’ve read another completely different interpretation, that it was his father-in-law!

I heard it was about chemotherapy too, my dear friend died of cancer when that song was out and that was my understanding at the time. All these years later I still can't stomach listening to it. 'like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown'. I think of it whenever i hear of someone terminally ill.

Lindtnotlint · 24/03/2025 23:29

Dylan! He won the Nobel Prize for it….
(suggest listening to “Hurricane” with her as a great example. She probably should pick something current that she loves as others have rightly said, but it’s a really great lyric and a fascinating story).

Hurt jonny cash

Such beautiful lyrics.

I also agree with the suggestion of MSP and their album 'The Holy Bible'. Some of the songs are tough going though. For example, 'Archives of Pain' looks at the glorification of serial killers, Their performance of 'Faster' on Top of the Pops had a huge number of complaints due to James wearing a balaclava.

Having said that, the reimagining (and revamping) of Falling in Reverse's 'The drug in me is you' and 'I am not a vampire' are interesting, especially when compared to the original versions. The feeling is so different despite being essentially the same songs. The original videos and new videos also have a completely different tone.

I do agree that it is important that your teen picks a song(s) that speaks to them.

surely the point of your teen having an assignment is that they do it - not their Mother or a group of random strangers on the internet.

If it's too hard, maybe they can get moved down to a lower class?

Don’t be silly. The songs are the starting point, an idea. The hard work is yet to come! She’d never have known about these older titles if not for the wonderful suggestions on here.
Thankfully the miserable and chronically unhelpful are in the minority.

Kneecap - C.E.A.R.T.A.
Its in Irish but there's a lot to analyse.

Hi, I read the drugs don’t work is about chemotherapy. The mother of the writer was having chemo and he felt it was making her more ill.

It was about Richard Ashcrofts Dad dying, but yes - now the drugs don't work, they just make you worse... Its a really sad song.

JanglingJack · 25/03/2025 01:53

Sheriff Fatman - Carter USM

Kneecap is a great suggestion. So much to analyse. Parful is about raving/drugs bringing young people together during The Troubles.

I’m bookmarking this post in case my own DC ever has a similar assignment as there are some brilliant suggestions here.

Marie8611 · 25/03/2025 06:45

For the first assignment, ‘Just a Girl’ by No Doubt might be a good one!
