To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

Quite a few years ago now, but I first felt old when looking at a prescription which had my age on it, and thinking they've got it wrong, I'm not 43. And then realising I was.

TiggyTomCat · 23/03/2025 20:25

This week - turned 60 and got a free prescription and have paid for a few tickets for things as a senior....did initially think I'd rather pay full price but I am rapidly getting over that!

DefyingGravidy · 23/03/2025 20:27

I was walking home in the dark recently - not late but about 9pm. I chose to walk down a road with terrace houses and short front gardens, rather than one with bungalows with big front gardens - on the basis that my plan has always been that if a man starts to follow me I’ll run to a random front door shouting “dad!”.

But then I realised… given my age it would be obvious that any dad I would have would be elderly, so that really wasn’t going to put an attacker off!

I am looking forward to turning 60 and getting free travel around London.

LaPalmaLlama · 23/03/2025 20:37

Looked out of the window and it was doing that quite heavy but misty rain and I thought “ooh that’ll be good for the lawn” and felt all pleased. Kill me now 🤣.

MaMisled · 23/03/2025 20:53

I was 55 and a cashier asked " do you need help with packing.....lovey?" Lovey!? FFS.

Hesdefinitelygettingthesnip · 23/03/2025 20:54

2 children at 28... One mid way through primary school. I feel SO OLD. Neither have been great sleepers, someone tell me I'll feel youthful again before I just decline indefinitely?!

MementoMountain · 23/03/2025 20:56

At an art class when a chatty fellow student asked "So do you still work at all?"

I was 50, with no prospect of early retirement on the horizon.

When the 35 year old woman who was doing my tattoo last week didn’t know George Harrison had been in The Beatles.

😭

Similar ( not having a tattoo though) my younger work colleague asked me "Which one is Freddie Mercury" ?

(In his defence he wasn;t born when Freddie died , but my soul wilted a tiny bit )

When my niece came to live with me 2 years ago. She talks about things I have no clue aboutGrin

@PaintedPottery whats your secret? I’m already showered and in bed I’m so exhausted!

I think having a baby at 42 helped 🤣🤣

MuddlingThroughLife · 23/03/2025 21:15

I will be 50 in the summer and I'm embracing my "old age".

  • Been diagnosed with high blood pressure.
  • I wear sketchers to work every day and I love them.
  • I'm going on my first cruise this year.
  • I'm planning on buying white sketchers trainers for all the excursions on said cruise.
  • I wear a coat on a night out.
  • I wear varifocals.
  • I'm exhausted. All the time!
  • I'm on HRT.
  • Sparse pubes.
  • Middle age spread that's going nowhere.
  • I have to pluck my chin hairs.
  • I enjoy doing diamond art.
  • A great weekend is not having to go anywhere, eating some nice meals or takeaways and chilling in front of the TV or reading a book or doing my diamond art.
  • Day drinking. Means I can be home and in my pj's by 9pm with a cuppa and start to sober up before bed.
  • I'm growing out my grey. Can't be arsed with colouring it. The older I get the more low maintenance I am!

I think that's all my "old lady" traits and I embrace them all.

Age is a privilege not afforded to everyone.

CrystalSingerFan · 23/03/2025 21:39

I felt old at my annual optician's appointment. Have needed glasses for driving forever. Was told my eyes were now doing that aged 'thing' where they swop round and now I need reading glasses instead.

Plus, FWIW, the extra magic machine check for £35 to see how my potential glaucoma was developing (or not) was the most exciting thing I did that week.

lovemycbf · 23/03/2025 21:53

Went to a wedding reception recently and was sat on the table with the older people 😜🤣

When I was 15, the media was making a huge fuss about the twenty-year 'Sgt Pepper' anniversary. The sixties seemed a light year away. Ditto Kennedy etc.

Now I realise that this year is the 40th anniversary of 'The Hounds of Love' and 'Meat is Murder.' Jaysus. 😱

I'm just a few years older than you and I loved The Beatles in my teens, but always considered them to have been from a completely different era.

It's weird now to think that the Brit Pop era of Oasis is Blur is more distant in time now than the Beatles were in my teenage years. When I heard some young thing refer to the clothes of that era as 'vintage' it gave me pause as I'm sure I still have items in my wardrobe from back then! Not that they would fit me anymore!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 23/03/2025 21:58

Lots of fun replies.

This year for me, a lot.
I noticed last year my brain wanted my body to move faster, now the brain has slowed down with the body, it is scary..44.

Itsjustnotthevibe · 23/03/2025 18:50

I am 45 and for me it was quite recent when I realised I could easily be the same age as the mum's of some of the youngsters at work.

The same thing occurred to me in my late 40s 😁
The police appear younger too, then you know you've 'arrived' 🙄

Sailorchick14 · 23/03/2025 22:05

Age 44 when my dodgy hip was finally diagnosed as osteoarthritis

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/03/2025 22:10

On a bus a few years back (not a NightBus but late evening , I was the only passenger )

I was near the front ( had a suitcase ) and watching the screen showing various views of inside the bus .

My brain wasn't thinking "Oh I remember that episode of Luther with the bloke crawling along the bus floor" ( though when I watched that I thought Eurgh those floors are FILTHY get up )

No. I thought What's my Mother doing on this bus ...it was my reflection Shock

I’ve just done two boozy nights on the run- age 56. I’m absolutely fucking ruined today and probably will be until about Wednesday. 30 years ago I would have been out again tonight!

I’ve done this a few times recently too but it’s the same feeling for me, infact the hangovers feel easier somehow.
The only difference is I don’t want to repeat it a second night in a row whereas back then it’s just what everyone did, peer pressure etc

Itchybritches · 23/03/2025 22:37

Whenever I have to give my age for something. The numbers (late 40s) just don’t make sense to me. How can I not be 26?
