To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

In my sixties and didn’t think I was officially old yet. However I wear crocs and sketchers and had to google mosh pit. So yeh maybe I am 👵🏼

When a young colleague said "oh my mom has a handbag like that".... I was 40.

Around the same time I was offered a seat on the bus. That was 100% proof I was definitely OLD.

Had a similar thing in reverse a few years back. I was just getting ready to cycle to work and was in front of the house putting my cycling helmet on. A 12 year old stopped and looked at me and said "my younger brother has the same helmet!"

Granted it was a plain round helmet (not a bike racing one) and had a cover that made it look like a bowl of jelly beans. I was about 58 at the time.

A few months ago when I turned 70.

When you're 60-something you can go along with the '60 is the new 50' schtick but there's no getting away from 70!

So I reckon that I'm now officially old 🌞

varden · 23/03/2025 16:00

I'm 67 (but 37 in my head). Very fit for my age i.e. no aches and pains etc. I knew I had to face reality when every single day last week I was offered a seat on the bus/tram. It's very kind of people, don't get me wrong, but I never thought I looked like someone who would need one lol 😊That's my epiphany and it sucks to face reality quite frankly. We rarely see ourselves as others see us obviously!

worrisomeasset · 23/03/2025 15:38

I’m a primary teacher and kids would sometimes call me ‘Mum’ by accident. A few years ago I got my first ‘Nan’.

Me too @worrisomeasset!
That was a shock 😄 I’m 54.

Avalovelace · 23/03/2025 16:02

When one of my colleagues said, “oh yes I’ve heard of O levels, my grandad did them”. I’m 55.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 23/03/2025 16:06

It’s whenever I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or a shop window. I’ve realised that whenever I settle down to do my makeup or wash my hands in the bathroom I sort of arrange my face, even though it’s only for me. I raise my eyebrow and smile a bit and tell myself I don’t look too bad. If I catch a glimpse of my unprepared expression, it’s like seeing my mother. Or a bloodhound.

When my daughter started dressing like I did in 1994 and refer to it as vintage.

I'm 49 and fitter and healthier than I was at 30 or 40...however, I had a rare night home alone last night (Dh away and ds out). Thought about seeing if friends were free to go out but instead I excitedly made myself a mushroom risotto, drank a single glass of wine and did some crochet.

We would be such good friends! Last Saturday night I actively encouraged DH to go and watch the rugby, just so I could excitedly tackle a tricky bit of my jigsaw. I made a pot of tea to sustain me, too.

MoshPitMum · 23/03/2025 16:11

Mine also best not be a mosh pit

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 23/03/2025 16:12

A few years ago I saw an old lady in the shop window, assumed she was behind me...

BarneyRonson · 23/03/2025 16:14

It’s realising I’m happy without any excitement or events or flirtations … I’m just happy. I think Ive reached my old age where I can just very happily do the garden and have a bath etc and I feel perfectly content and I don’t care about trivial things. I was a much busier person inside as well as outside when I was younger.

UpsideDownChairs · 23/03/2025 16:15

I thought it was when my hips ached and I took a bit of time to get moving after I got out of bed in the morning - but since reducing my dairy that's completely cleared up. So I'd have to say, it's the first time I kissed a guy over 40.

I don't know how I'll feel should I get in a relationship again, since that would likely be a bloke over 50, and that really would make me feel old.

SauvignonBlanche · 23/03/2025 16:17

When I started listening to the Today programme on R4 on my drive into work. 😂

FootTapping · 23/03/2025 16:18

I'm 46.

Sometimes I feel 12!
Often I feel 26!
At night, when all I want to do is clamber into bed, I feel 85!

So sometimes I feel young and sometimes old ;)

SwanOfThoseThings · 23/03/2025 16:19

I think when I reclassified going to the pub for a drink from 'a fun activity' to 'far too much hassle and a waste of money', which would have been about 10 years ago in my early 40s.

NovemberMorn · 23/03/2025 16:19

When people stopped mentioning I was too young to be a nana.

INeedEvidenceMum · 23/03/2025 16:24

I’ve always wanted to visit Australia and New Zealand but now I’m thinking that’s ‘a bit far’ 😂

cockeyedoptimist · 23/03/2025 16:24

Mine was on holiday France in my mid 30s being called madame - not Mademoiselle by shop assistants and waiters

Pandimoanymum · 23/03/2025 16:25

I don't think I'm old, but realise I've been doing "old people things" for several years.
-I grunt when I flop down onto, or get up from the sofa.
-I don't want to stand up at concerts.
-I like to know where the nearest toilet is.
-I say things like "gosh, xxx is SO expensive these days" (this started pre-cost of living crisis)
-I don't understand some of the words my 19 year old uses.
-my knees hurt sometimes.

I think at 57 I'm pretty much there!

AInightingale · 23/03/2025 16:25

When people stop referring to you as a 'girl' (any woman aged between 0-45 where I am).

IcedPurple · 23/03/2025 16:26

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/03/2025 15:41

When people started calling me "madam" in shops.

I lived in Italy many years ago and used to be addressed as 'Signorina'. In my mid 40s, I returned for a short trip after not having been back for over a decade. I was dismayed to find I was now 'Signora'! Well, maybe not dismayed but it was one of those moments!

AngelicKaty · 23/03/2025 16:29

47 for me - I became fully menopausal and needed reading glasses that same year! 🤓😂

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2025 16:30

5 years ago, when my class of 11 year olds was forced onto google meet due to the pandemic. Playing around with backgrounds it came to light that they had no idea what a cassette tape was.

To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!
