Feel this country has become rotten - benefits

She11y · 20/03/2025 23:13

A studio apartment in my area is about £800 per month.
A minim wage job is around £1500 per month net.
After you've worked in a hard and demanding job - most minimum wage jobs are demanding - you've got £700 to pay for food, travel, bills, clothes.
You might end up with £100 left over each month. Working hard all your life with no hope of owning your own home or having any sort of financial stability.
No wonder people don't want to work. Make owninf a house affordable and over night 1/3 the people claiming benefits will stop.

My point is that a lot of people are on benefits because they're depressed at the hopelessness of their futures, and try to avoid working.

But as I'm keep saying a birth and a death doesn't mean a population is stable or not ageing. I don't understand why you think it has any relevance?

My comments are relevant because they refer correctly back to your original post on this subject that I commented on.

In 50 years time who will be paying for everyones pensions? Housing?

Unless something is done drastically now, society will have collapsed long before then.

Society will have collapsed by then probably, but infinity immigration from hostile cultures is only accelerating the decline, not slowing it.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:35

Immigration isn't going anywhere regardless of my personal feelings about it. Why do you think it will stop @EasternStandard?

But that population won’t just keep going up either.

I don't know what the above means.

So what are you proposing?

I haven't proposed anything, why do I have to propose something? Financially we are fucked because the government hasn't planned for the ageing population, we already have more over 65 yr olds than under 15 yr olds so I think we will see immigration. What are you proposing @EasternStandard?

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:36

@FreedomandPeace but people living longer has increased the UK population. 😆

You appear to be saying conflicting statements that immigration will be required but the population won’t keep going up.

What is it that you think will happen? Will population keep increasing due to immigration or not?

Stonefromthehenge · 21/03/2025 14:37

The problem isn't that people don't want to work but that society doesn't work for people. The vast majority of disabled people are perfectly capable of working in some capacity - we'd all benefit from it.

Our needs aren't special needs, they're human needs that we're not able to suppress in order to be worked like machines. That's what employers want and we don't fit the mould. Who's to blame and who's really benefitting?

Or, we could try and get back to a time when a minimum wage job allowed a family to survive. Not every person can be employed in highly paid roles. Or we would have no one doing the unskilled jobs that are still vital for the running of the country

When I worked I was on NMW and lived alone in a one bed flat. No benefit top ups. I even managed to save a little each month.
That is impossible now.
My job was vital and I enjoyed it.

Agree.

The collapse of society is a horrifying thought. What will happen? Civil war, extreme poverty and mass homelessness, violence and crime.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:41

@EasternStandard I haven't said anything conflicting. What I have said is that I do not believe any government will do anything about immigration because we have an ageing population. I'm genuinely baffled as to why this is hard to understand or controversial?

You have also said you don’t expect the population to keep going up.

If you believe the gov will keep pushing immigration what stops the population from going up?

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:43

Again what I believe that governments will do isn't a reflection of what I think they should do or something I agree with. What has happened to comprehension 😭. Reminds me when I got lambasted on a thread for saying I thought Trump might win. Me thinking he had a chance of winning doesn't mean I'm a fan.

Absolutely agree!
plus the overal benefits as calculated should include housing, reduction in ctax, free prescriptions etc whatever comes free or reduced. It should never be more to be on benefits and should be significantly less
If that’s what Labour want
to
Make Work Pay
^^

Edited

Not everyone on benefits gets housing, the amount people get varies by area. Some areas vary in what someone on benefits has to pay in council tax. If I had to pay for my prescriptions then it would be over £40 per week. I am only allowed to pick them up weekly. Some people need more meds and some less. That is not really a benefit as anyone can pay the £10 prepayment certificate and just pay that monthly. Some people pay no prescriptions charges because they have a certain health condition.

You are really muddled with strong statements.

On one hand immigration is here to stay - your view.

And who on Earth thinks population will keep going up also in your posts.

I’m amazed you can’t see the flaw in your own posts.

And you haven’t answered what you actually think will happen to population over time, due to that contradictory posting. Emojis don’t explain it either.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:46

You have also said you don’t expect the population to keep going up.

I don't recall saying that?

Why do you think the government will stop immigration @EasternStandard?

My view is governments won't stop immigration.

And who on Earth thinks population will keep going up also in your posts.

That was in the context of balancing demographics, that ship has sailed. You can't reverse falling birth rates or at least I don't know a country that has. Do you?

You haven't answered anything I have asked you?

CyclingAddict · 21/03/2025 14:51

I know it is not easy for everyone but if 18-24 year olds could remain in the family home in order to save for a deposit for a house. (Or return home after Uni).

Even on NMW it could work:

Weekly income: £350

Board/lodgings: £50 (not all parents want a payment)

Leaving £300 per week for clothes, socialising, travel, etc…£1,200 per month which, surely, could mean managing to save £800 per month.

£800 x 12 months = £9,600 per year.

in our area you need around £20,000 for a deposit

going into a rental makes it too difficult to save

sorry to state the obvious

Just become more like the third world countries that migrants are fleeing from.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:53

Without that it seems our system demands an unsustainable pyramid shape, we can’t keep just going up though - unless people think we can?

I replied the below to the above

Who on earth thinks that?😆

we can't get back to a pyramid shape, that ship has sailed. Or did you not mean pyramid shape @EasternStandard because you seem muddled?

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 14:55

@frillygillymillypopulation is more than birth rates it’s also immigration so it can go up.

I have said what I think, in the first post. AI and automation will help ameliorate the issues. A never ending pyramid is not sustainable so we’re going to need it.

Govs need to look at tax take from that and secure it. If we want to avoid collapse it’s a lower younger workforce, AI related tax take here. Countries that see profit go o/s will struggle. It will become more about tax from that than immigration and labour.

CyclingAddict · 21/03/2025 14:58

We are, very quickly, becoming a third world country as @User32459 has said

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 15:00

A never ending pyramid is not sustainable so we’re going to need it.

But we don't have a pyramid now so why do you think immigration would mean a pyramid?
