Feel this country has become rotten - benefits

A studio apartment in my area is about £800 per month.
A minim wage job is around £1500 per month net.
After you've worked in a hard and demanding job - most minimum wage jobs are demanding - you've got £700 to pay for food, travel, bills, clothes.
You might end up with £100 left over each month. Working hard all your life with no hope of owning your own home or having any sort of financial stability.
No wonder people don't want to work. Make owninf a house affordable and over night 1/3 the people claiming benefits will stop.

My point is that a lot of people are on benefits because they're depressed at the hopelessness of their futures, and try to avoid working.

please re-read the post I responded to. It was not about autism

You quoted someone who was on about ND conditions.

Yet...

And in any case, if the government is correct about claims going up, it’s not just people with ND conditions or mental health difficulties because they have said that the main areas where claims have risen is conditions like arthritis, back problems and fibromyalgia as well as MH conditions in 18-24 year olds. If some of those conditions are becoming more disabling there is a reason and I would guess it might be not being able to get NHS treatment soon enough.

So this is a wider issue than some people realise.

These are largely psychosomatic conditions. People with these conditions can’t function but their condition can be a response to the lack of better opportunities.

If society shows you that work doesn’t pay but illness does, how do you think your brain is going to respond to that information? By making you sick.

No one seems to answer this. Where are the jobs?

They mentioned ND before that though

If the parents are ND, it shows it has always existed. Previous generations coped (albeit undiagnosed) and survived. Maybe we should revert back. Past generations led a straightforward life and seemed happier than now.

The way life evolves is not always progress but sometimes detrimental to society.

This and similar posts are totally ignoring that the world has changed.

Currently the world is very uncertain and full of overwhelming choices and lack of stability. For most people, and especially for autistic people, it's more difficult to find a stable job within this.

Going back to the OPs post, it's more difficult to earn a liveable income without claiming benefits. So more people claim benefits for a variety of reasons.

If you need a 3k post tax income to have a decent standard of living, without claiming benefits, you need to earn quite close to the higher rate of income tax to achieve that. So most people can't earn enough and then most taxpayers are then to an extent claiming money back in benefits until they earn hit 50k or more in income at which point they're not claiming and helping subsidising everyone earning slightly less. So it works out ok financially if you earn way above any of that and also avoid tax. If you earn less that 100k and blame anything other than tax avoidance for the current shit show, you're mainly looking in the wrong place.

I loved my old job. Then they bought in tech that stressed me out. We got tracked etc, and were expected to be available all the time. If I was in the middle of a job, I could not deal with being disturbed.
When I go to a shop and see the cashier sat there with a headset on, it just makes me thing that all jobs are like that now.

ThisOldThang · 22/03/2025 00:09

@WeylandYutani

I don't think you should be permitted to opt out of paid employment, for the rest of your life, just because you found your previous job 'stressful'.

Job related stress is something that the vast majority of people have to deal with. Those same people don't owe you a lifelong meal ticket.

It was not just stress. I tried to take my own life and spent months in hospital under section.

I never said I don't want to never work again.
I want to, but sadly no one will give me a chance. I am autistic and I seem to give off a vibe to people interviewing me. If you are not ND then you wont get it.
I get nowhere. I would love to have my own money and freedom. No one gives me the chance.
If you want me to work then CHANGE THAT first.

You really do - you give a very strong vibe that you don't want to work. That's why they don't give you a job, not because of your ND. Many large businesses (retailers for sure) bend backwards to hit their inclusivity targets and do make adjustments for various disabilities. But candidates need to show willingness to try.

What makes you think that arthritis and fibromyalgia are psychosomatic? I don’t experience these conditions so I don’t know. Are you a doctor?

Sadly, wages no longer cover the cost of living and a lot of people are grateful for additional benefits, but all this does is stop employers paying a decent wage.

Benefits shouldn’t exist for working adults, because they should be paid a fair wage - I think minimum wage has a lot to answer for, some one just starting out should not be on the same wage and someone with 20 years experience.

Minimum wage does not cover basic living expenses. Hence people needing benefits to top up. If anything, minimum wage needs to increase to actually fund life.

Sorry. I am upset right now
I have EUPD and ASD. Both are shite to live with
I have not been able to work for a long time. Spent many years in hospital.
I have GCSEs from when I was a kid. Fuck all after that apart from some thing that is not even available any more.
I tried to work. I got fired. I only managed a few weeks at a time.
I did have a job I LOVED. but it changed so much I could not deal with it any more. I was sacked

Those taxpayers need to stay humble and remember they are a stroke/accident/breakdown away from needing benefits themselves.

Yes, I can completely understand why. There was a thread in Mners with SN where ignorant people were telling a 19 year old autistic girl that because she’s articulate she shouldn’t be allowed to claim PIP. She disappeared from her own thread.

Decent people don’t need to punch down to make themselves feel good. The ignorance of some of these posts is something that I can laugh off because it’s so thick it’s funny.

People like this don’t have the intelligence or empathy to understand what life might be like for someone else and you don’t need to explain yourself to them or give them an opportunity to stick the boot in.

Absolutely
and if I needed support I would apply
if I could go back to work as deemed fit I would go.
Thats how the system works
Thats what we all pay into for when we are too disabled or elderly
