To not use proper spellings when naming your child

Am I being unreasonable to think it's ridiculous to use a funky spelling of a normal name. I spent today dealing with lost paperwork for a child as the person that took the details didn't think to check the spelling as there is no other spelling of the name.

It looks silly and just causes no end of problems for the child. It also disadvantages them as straight away people get an image of what the child is like.

I love that you keep replying ❤️

I do too, with the exact same polite post. It's a masterclass in how to gracefully acknowledge a mistake, whilst very gently making all the people who can't be arsed to rtft look a bit silly.

That’s just how a lot of Slavic language speaking countries would spell it. Not everyone in the U.K. was born here/has fully British roots or has English as a first language (just in case you were unaware of that 🙄)

Yes I have already been corrected by multiple people. Thank you. I have learnt something new today. 🙂

So why's it wrong? Llay is a place near me and its pronounced as Cly.

Because the letter ll in Welsh isn't pronounced as cl, it's pronounced as in the video I posted. See also, Llandudno, the Llan in that is not pronounced as Clan.

Surely a super common name (eg less ubiquitous Evie, Emily etc) would be much less of an identification risk than a unique name though?

Really hard to explain without giving too much info - the name was already v unusual, we weren’t allowed to change it, so we changed it phonetically if that makes sense?

Hotflushesandchilblains · 19/03/2025 19:55

Unfortunately, I think sometimes odd spellings are because people dont know the correct spelling and cant be bothered to look it up.

Snorlaxo · 19/03/2025 19:55

I saw a post on here a few years ago where the mum was upset that people couldn’t pronounce her DD’s name correctly. People like the HV were pronouncing Elle as “L” rather than “Ellie. I wonder if she changed the spelling or pronunciation ?

It's not jydhingvtge child. However, multiple studies show that there is a correlation between names and social class and educational outcome and also how school/ employers view you.

Unfortunately, yes. Easy flag for teachers of children likely to need additional support (apple not falling far from the tree).

It’s a Polish spelling.

@tulippa - here's another one!

I am very bored on a delayed train journey. I am genuinely pleased to have learnt about the spelling though and won't make the same mistake again.

I feel bad for being the second. Though in my defence I was replying as the first person did. I promise I wouldn't have laboured the point if I'd read that first 😆😆

I think you've misread here.

Adoptive families tend to meet up with other adoptive families fir support and understanding.

Similarly, I know very large numbers of autistic children because we went to autism support groups and an autism-friendly school.

It's not that every she knows has since adopted children.

Thank you - that’s exactly what I meant. Sorry I wasn’t clearer. My DC are adopted, autistic and not in mainstream so our tribe is quite niche!

@Namechangetry that reminds me of a parent who I asked about the French first name her son had. This was about 30 years ago in a really rough area. A tough school. No connection at all to France Mum just liked the name. At least it was spelled correctly. I also mentioned in passing to another parent the very unusual surname her son had. I wondered about its origins? She said ‘I wouldn’t know I only met his Dad the once’ 😂 Then there was the poor child called BJ. I could probably write a book. Oh and don’t you think poor @tulippa has suffered enough for her mistake. How many more are going to tell her the same thing?

Tbf jydhingvtge child is a really bad name. I would judge them, and both their parents

BlueLurker · 19/03/2025 20:00

There’s more to it than parents being a bit dim… we live in a social media world where it’s far easier to find someone with a weird spelling than a ‘standard’ one. How many Ellie Smiths are there? I wouldn’t do it, but some people might think they’re giving their child a leg up in helping them to stand out.

I work somewhere where there is a sign to contact Kacper if you need a certain thing doing. I spent months thinking that's an unusual name until I realised it was a funky spelling of Casper. Parents obviously didn't know the letter c only makes 's' when followed by i, e or y.

Edited

Kacper is the polish spelling

You are allowed to change an adopted child's name. SS can ask you not to but they can't actually stop you when you apply for the adoption order. You might decide that identity, roots etc is more important but SS cannot prevent adopters from changing a child's name at the point of adoption.

These unique kids are facing a lifetime of grief having to correct every single solitary person who ever spells their name.

rosegoldwatcher · 19/03/2025 20:03

@BatchCookBabe - for all its faults the school was hot on admin so, I'm sure, the name would have been checked and checked and checked again. She was on all registers as Sharkia, still, when I left at the end of her year 9.

In my final year, being a part-timer and not a form tutor, I was often asked to take the register for absent colleagues. I would quickly run my eyes down the list of names and almost always think, "Oh-oh!"
I'd say, "If I get your name wrong, I'm not trying to be funny. Just tell me how I should say it." That never worked and much guffawing would ensue... Sometimes I would think, "There's no-way I can even attempt that first name," and call them, for instance, Miss Smith or Mr Carter. Safer!!!

That’s the Polish way of spelling Caspar.
