To not use proper spellings when naming your child

Am I being unreasonable to think it's ridiculous to use a funky spelling of a normal name. I spent today dealing with lost paperwork for a child as the person that took the details didn't think to check the spelling as there is no other spelling of the name.

It looks silly and just causes no end of problems for the child. It also disadvantages them as straight away people get an image of what the child is like.

I've seen

Jaymz
Ezmay
Lil-leigh

Floats your goat! 😂

I wonder how old Llayceigh will be before she changes the way she writes her name to the proper way Lacey.

JoyousEagle · 19/03/2025 18:29

I’d put money on “Jaymz” deciding by adulthood to just always go by “Jamie” and only use Jaymz when they absolutely have to, like on a passport.

I had to write a four year old reception child in the accident book at lunch today (primary school TA), and he didn't know his last name. Couldn't find Jack anywhere on the class list. I don't work in EYFS, so didnt know I should be looking for Dgaque!

ARichtGoodDram · 19/03/2025 18:32

As someone saddled with a stupid name as a child (changed at 14 unofficially and then officially at 16) I always feel somehow even sorrier for kids with appalling spelling.

Trying to keep a neutral face when Matthyew's dad told me it was a coin toss between that and Matthyou was a hard one.

As an infant teacher of 40 years I’ve seen many ….. the most interesting being a boy with apostrophes instead of vowels eg D’m’n’c - not that actual name but you get the idea. Didn’t want to get into trouble and write the actual name!

ThatsCute · 19/03/2025 18:34

Poor little Jaymz needs to get a bingo card—one stamp every time he has to explain. “it’s pronounced like James”—his parents owe him a tenner every time he fills in a card.

tulippa · 19/03/2025 18:34

I work somewhere where there is a sign to contact Kacper if you need a certain thing doing. I spent months thinking that's an unusual name until I realised it was a funky spelling of Casper. Parents obviously didn't know the letter c only makes 's' when followed by i, e or y.

There are no words.

Poor little dude.

Confusedmermaid1 · 19/03/2025 18:35

Mine is a pain in the ass enough and it’s a a very common name with an ie instead of a y e.g Hollie rather than Holly
These poor kids 🙄

Rufus27 · 19/03/2025 18:36

There may be more to it. One of my DC has a v unusual name. We adopted DC as a baby, weren’t allowed to change the first name, but knew it made DC v identifiable (birth family are potentially dangerous) so we decided to change the spelling to something ‘unique’ but safe. I expect we are judged but, if it keeps DC safe, I don’t care.

I can think of at least four other instances I know of locally where this has occurred for adoption related reasons; one of the changed spellings is similar to one you quote in your OP.

Zippidydoodah · 19/03/2025 18:36

HOW THE ACTUAL FUCK did that get past the registrar?

I might be wrong but I think that’s the Polish spelling. DS was at primary school with a Kacper who’s parents are Polish.

Where do you live that there are so many adopted unsafe children with identifiable names that need tweaking?

Stafanko · 19/03/2025 18:38

That's the Polish spelling I believe. A boy in my child's class has that spelling, his family are Polish

Natsku · 19/03/2025 18:39

This is why I'm a fan of naming laws, putting sensible restrictions on what you can name your children. Because they're not pets or toys, their names matter to them and can make a difference to their lives.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 19/03/2025 18:40

There’s no law around this I don’t think? I don’t think the registrar can do anything about it?

I’m sure France has laws around this. I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all.
