To not use proper spellings when naming your child

Am I being unreasonable to think it's ridiculous to use a funky spelling of a normal name. I spent today dealing with lost paperwork for a child as the person that took the details didn't think to check the spelling as there is no other spelling of the name.

It looks silly and just causes no end of problems for the child. It also disadvantages them as straight away people get an image of what the child is like.

I've seen

Ezmay
Lil-leigh

That’s the Polish way of spelling Caspar.

Yes I have already been corrected by multiple people. Thank you. I have learnt something new today. 🙂

tulippa · 19/03/2025 20:05

Not sure if people are replying about Polish spelling on purpose now....

Almost hope they are actually. It's marvellous, the whole thing.

I know it's a typical but forever more I want to use the phrase "floats your goat" 🤣

One for the “ viscous” thread!

Apollo365 · 19/03/2025 20:06

I love a goat float as much as the next girl but…

Tbf jydhingvtge child is a really bad name. I would judge them, and both their parents

I wonder if that's a Polish spelling?

It’s not unique, it’s not clever. It just shows that your parents weren’t very classy or clever.

I couldn't agree more and wish more people thought this way, the mangling and twisting of names, mispelling etc is in my view awful, sign of the times sadly.

Side note - but the name llacey with a welsh Ll is actually growing on me 🤣🤣

There is a real Welsh name similar to that-Lleucu. It’s pronounced Hlaykee

tillytoodles1 · 19/03/2025 20:18

RichardMarxisinnocent · 19/03/2025 19:53

Because the letter ll in Welsh isn't pronounced as cl, it's pronounced as in the video I posted. See also, Llandudno, the Llan in that is not pronounced as Clan.

Well I'm English and we call it Clandithno.

LittleGreenDuck · 19/03/2025 20:18

Does anyone know how to spell Caspar in Polish?

Wrangledi · 19/03/2025 20:18

My daughter goes to school with a Pegi. I keep expecting her to rate films….

I work somewhere where there is a sign to contact Kacper if you need a certain thing doing. I spent months thinking that's an unusual name until I realised it was a funky spelling of Casper. Parents obviously didn't know the letter c only makes 's' when followed by i, e or y.

Are you sure this name isn’t from another heritage. I know a child with this name from Eastern European heritage and it is spelled like this

I had to write a four year old reception child in the accident book at lunch today (primary school TA), and he didn't know his last name. Couldn't find Jack anywhere on the class list. I don't work in EYFS, so didnt know I should be looking for Dgaque!

Oh dear god. I worked in a school and some of the spellings! The best one from the 90’s was Hermyoknee, I kid you not. My son lives in America and his best one was L- pronounced Ldasher.

Ajay is an Indian name (UH-jay)…

Oh this kid was not Indian. His parents thought it a better spelling of AJ. It was pronounced AJ too.

I have learnt something new that it is also an Indian name though- never knew that

LlynTegid · 19/03/2025 20:22

Using a name that is widely used in another country which is part of your heritage is something perfectly reasonable.

The examples the OP give are none of those. They are not ridiculous, they are unkind. I would support a registrar of births who refused to enter a name like that given as examples.

BarneyRonson · 19/03/2025 18:38

Where do you live that there are so many adopted unsafe children with identifiable names that need tweaking?

Where I live there are adoption networking groups where parents (either to be or actual) can meet for support - it's quite likely to be something like that.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 19/03/2025 20:23

@Namechangetry
I was thinking the exact same thing. Actually the name thing doesn't bother me as much, especially as I have a very common name with an easy abbreviation that I've always liked. Thanks mum and dad.
