Knickers... How many is too many?

CoolOtter · 18/03/2025 21:32

We are changing our bedroom furniture and my new knicker drawer is smaller than the old one; the the drawer needed to be sorted. Turns out I have 173 pairs of knickers!
This got me wondering, does anyone have less than 20 pairs? What is the minimum?

RedRiverShore5 · 19/03/2025 07:24

I have about 40, fortunately, as M&S discontinued my favourite knicker so glad now I bought loads when they were reduced

LittleEarrings · 19/03/2025 07:36

Haha I recently had surgery and am still off work so today’s job to kill the boredom is actually sorting out my knicker drawer!
I know I have too many, I would hazard a guess at 50 pairs? But I have so many different styles, like thongs, shorts, big after childbirth knickers (that I still wear at night sometimes when I’m feeling bloated and uncomfortable!), period knickers, ‘invisible’ ones etc . So will report back later!

AuntieMarys · 19/03/2025 07:46

I have 21. 7 pairs of 3 different styles....2 sets of Wirana boxers ( long and short styles) and a set of pants for the gym. I replace each year.
3 bras...1 black, 2 nudes tshirt bras.
7 pairs of socks.

wotsitallfor · 19/03/2025 07:54

I have about 100, also too many.

What an illuminating thread.

IncessantNameChanger · 19/03/2025 07:55

Far too many. Like a pp I'd want at least two pairs a day for a two week holiday. Do people seriously never change them for bed? After a evening shower or wear the same pair for 24 hours?

Also too many socks. Right now I'm wearing both to death and aiming to rotate them into the bin before getting to minimal numbers.

I have far too much of everything right now

VioletCharlotte · 19/03/2025 07:57

173 pairs is an impressive collection!

I think I just have about 40. I like to put on a clean pair for bed and will always change them if I go out in the evening after I've had a shower.

I've only got about 4 bras though which doesn't feel like enough.

I thought at least two pairs is day is completely normal.

Fresh pair in the morning, and fresh pair at night, but I do get that many don't wear any at night.

I do. They are my security blanket at night.

minnienono · 19/03/2025 08:01

@IncessantNameChanger

why do you need knickers in bed Grin so no I don’t change them I just put them in the laundry basket, I sleep naked.

minnienono · 19/03/2025 08:05

And as for holidays, if over a week I do a wash, no choice as we usually are on the motorbike and space is very limited. Even when we cruise i realised quickly they offer free self service laundry facilities and it means you have less to do when you get home

CarrieOnComplaining · 19/03/2025 08:05

I don’t wear pants (or anything) in bed.

I am sure everyone puts on clean pants after a shower, but if I shower in the evening and only wear pants for a short while I might put the same pair back on the next morning to go to the gym and then put clean ones on after post-gym shower.

Keeping my washing bills and climate change down one pair of pants at a time.

StarlightLady · 19/03/2025 08:14

Unless l’ve a heavy period, l wouldn’t wear knickers in bed. I hate wearing anything in bed.

l usually have a bath or shower after work (l shower first thing when l get up as well), but often don’t bother to wear any in the evening unless l’m going out.

l travel a fair bit for work, but wash things when away, the same when on holiday. I can’t imagine bringing a suitcase full of dirty knickers back. With so many on the line on return the neighbours would think l’ve put the flags out 😀.

Sarah2891 · 19/03/2025 08:21

About 10 pairs. More than enough for me.

ShodAndShadySenators · 19/03/2025 08:40

Gazillions. I have had a cull recently where I've realised that some of the fancy ones are just not going to get worn, as I will always pick a comfy pair first. I bought one lot because they were apparently super comfy. Then another set were lauded as SUPER SUPER comfy so I got some of those too. And bought a second set as they were indeed the most comfortable drawers I've ever had...

(I also take two pairs per day on holiday and usually in summer here in the UK, will change for a fresh pair during the day. Going to the loo and pulling a pair of cold, clammy sweaty knickers back up... horrible!)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2025 09:28

About 12

gladwhiskers · 19/03/2025 11:30

Twelve. Eight winter and four summer.

Tagyoureit · 19/03/2025 11:35

By the time I've done laundry and put it back in the drawer, I probably only wear the same 4/5 pair but I have about 30 I reckon.

PeachesPeachesPeachesPeachesPeaches · 19/03/2025 11:37

I lost a lot of weight last year - size 24 down to 14. Bought all my clothes from vinted but never got round to going into an actual shop to replace underwear until this month. Threw out all my old knickers, about 30 pairs, and replaced with 8 new ones (plus four pairs of period pants). Keep meaning to get more but seem to be managing fine on this number as I’m doing a few loads of washing a week.

thecherryfox · 19/03/2025 11:40

So I only wear ‘granny’ style high waisted underwear - I don’t have any variation in style. I have about 4 ‘decent’ frilly style ones. About 10 ‘daily’ ones. And about 4 pairs of ones I wear on my period. They’re literally all black too! I think if I had different colours or styles I would have a lot more - but I just stick to what I know and wear the same ones (obviously different pairs) daily for convenience.

I know so many people who wear both knickers and bras to bed and I cannot think of anything worse. I would walk in the door and take my bra off straight away and I only ever wear knickers to bed if I’m wearing a nightdress or on my period. I feel restricted and suffocated if I’m wearing underwear to bed! My mum always said to me ‘let things breathe’ so I guess I grew up with that mentality and do it with my own children too

LoveDandelions · 19/03/2025 11:44

Less than 20 here, including a few that should really be in the bin, but I can't face looking for new ones 😂

On that topic, can anyone recommend some non-expensive ones that are actually comfortable? Must be cotton...

I still have a few old M&S midis with the lace edges. but I think they've changed now? My Tesco full briefs have scratchy elastic.

Johaanah · 19/03/2025 12:57

Around 40, including 10ish pairs of period pants, some which the elastic has given up on but I use these at night, I recently replaced some very old and worn out Sloggi Tai control pants with the exact same 6 pairs, I also like Sloggi lace Tai mini and I have 9 pairs in black, add to that a random selection of knickers that I rarely wear.

I also take double the amount on holiday, so 28 pairs on a two week break.

I can’t imagine sleeping in a bra!

l’ve slept naked since l was about 14 (40 something now), mum, dad and elder sister always slept naked for as long as l can remember. I just followed suite. Upbringing again!

luckylavender · 19/03/2025 13:05

I always have 25 pairs. 20 in use and one new packet.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/03/2025 13:40

I was going to answer that there is no such thing as too many knickers but on reflection I think 173 is too many. I have about 25.

Devilsmommy · 19/03/2025 13:45

CheeseWisely · 18/03/2025 21:58

Definitely less than 20. About 12 in regular rotation and a few pairs of nice romantic time knickers that haven’t seen the light of day since DS was born.

Sorry this made me giggle because I've got exactly the same down to the romantic time lacy ones that also haven't seen the light of day since my DS was born 🤭
