Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

Just wanted to say, experiment with different antiperspirant deodorants. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for others. I used to use Mitchum, it was great for a while then stopped working for me. I now use Sanex, tried a couple of different ones before I found one that suited.

Oh, I haven’t heard of the bar soap, what brand would you recommend?
yes I always use the dettol laundry as well as the laundry tabs and scent booster

Pears bar soap and a proper flannel solved my teen BO problems.

BakewellGin1 · 17/03/2025 19:56

White school shirts 60 degrees with dettol laundry liquid added. Also white vinegar sprayed onto the armpit areas for 10 min prior to washing if particularly bad.

Blazer 40 degrees with dettol laundry liquid added

Jumpers on a 40 degree wash

Decent wash with body wash or soap morning and night

Deodorant Mitcham roll on and a spray of sure also

Shirts worn for one day only
Blazer three days and jumpers 2 days if none smelling

I haven’t tried the Dettol product but Napisan in the powder drawer along with washing powder also works to remove sweat smells, especially from synthetics like gym clothes where it really persists. . And wash at 40C or higher.

Came to say this too - I swear by Napisan too

Teenybub · 17/03/2025 19:59

I had a similar issue and changed to biological washing powder and it fixed it. My clothes seemed fresh but within an hour or wearing them I could smell myself. I’ve noticed if I wear synthetic fabrics like polyester the smell lingers so I try to make sure there is a higher % of natural materials.

Faith in nature bar soap, pretty cheap, nice smelling and not full of crap. Sounds weird but I actually feel cleaner than if I use shower gel.

Mountainfrog · 17/03/2025 19:59

We have a hygiene setting on our washing machine which is brilliant for cottons (including towels which have gone a bit musty - removes all residual detergent etc) - but does steam at 60 so not good for synthetics

FNDCausedByAntipsychotic · 17/03/2025 20:00

A teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in the powder drawer of the washing machine and some Mitchum 48 hour deodorant for your DD.

Losingmymind85 · 17/03/2025 20:11

Vinegar! I use the spray that's £1 or so in Asda or home bargains. Spray the pits, wait 10, then straight into wash at 30. No smell!

CrotchetyQuaver · 17/03/2025 20:11

Wash at 40, if they're white shirts at 60 and keep at those temps going forward. The smell will go, but it might take a few goes to get there.

babyproblems · 17/03/2025 20:12

A proper bar of soap would be better than shower gel etc. Also is she using deodorant or anti perspirant? Make sure it’s a deodorant. I think washing at 30 probably isn’t enough in this case, and maybe soak stuff in an anti bacterial detergent before you wash them in the machine?

Pudmyboy · 17/03/2025 20:15

Vanish do an odour removal Powder, there's lots of advice online including crushed aspirin and cream of tartar powder (I think), I used this some years ago with a good result on some old tee shirts.
Also, bar soap for armpits as others have suggested

Octavia64 · 17/03/2025 20:15

Can agree - Dettol laundry cleanser.
Dettol antibacterial soap is good but hibiscrub is six million times better.

most soaps on the market don’t really clean.

most deodorants are just nice perfume and don’t deal with bo.

Mitchum is the best I’ve tried so far.

Thisismetooaswell · 17/03/2025 20:18

Pour white vinegar onto the armpits of the clothes and leave for about 10 minutes before washing. It absolutely removes the sweat smell and doesn't leave a vinegary smell after washing at all. I wash everything at 30. I also recommend a natural, charcoal deodorant.

I have a daughter who had the same problems.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 17/03/2025 20:18

You are a lovely Mum, OP. I know my mum would have told me to get on with it.

vickylou78 · 17/03/2025 20:20

2x caps of Dettol laundry cleanser and wash at 40.

vickylou78 · 17/03/2025 20:20

Make sure clothes are only worn once also

Sinkintotheswamp · 17/03/2025 20:20

Wash clothes inside out and line dry.

I have tried stain remover, but not vinegar. Does that not smell equally bad?

White vinegar instead of fabric softener is your friend. It eliminates odour, softens fabric, is cheap as chips, doesn’t smell of vinegar once washed at all & is good for your washing machine (softener turns to gooey sticky slime residue that moulds).

Lolapusht · 17/03/2025 20:26

Have you tried a fabric spray? I just bought Tallow & Ash to try and it’s really nice. Strong scent (maybe too strong but I bought the wrong one so that’s on me!) that stays on clothes. It also kills germs and is designed to refresh clothes so you don’t have to wash after one wear. I’ve seen a couple advertised.

You could maybe make your own with essential oils…peppermint, lemon & teatree are antibacterial so may help kill the bacteria.

CandidGreenSquid · 17/03/2025 20:26

I was (and still am) very much like your daughter with the sweating and BO no matter how much I washed myself and my clothes. I swear by Dricolor Sensitive, applied to clean, dry skin every 3 night before bed. It is the only thing that has worked for me. If you choose to use something like this then don’t shave for at least 24 hours before applying otherwise it makes your underarms so itchy and sore! Then I just use Mitchum roll on in the daytime. Hope you and your DD get things sorted!

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I went through every soap powder brand on the market at the time, until I came to Bold.

My DH used to work with the worst smells imaginable[worse than ones you can probably come up with], and Bold was the only brand that removed the odours.
