Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

I have tried stain remover, but not vinegar. Does that not smell equally bad?

I spray with white vinegar before putting in the washing machine and that gets all types of smell out.

Sorrynotsorry22 · 19/03/2025 17:41

Have other people mentioned it to her ? Or do all teen get a bit funky? Also as a mother we're primed to detect changes in our family's smells
She might have a condition so best to see a doctor in a tactful way.

Use anti bacterial rinse instead of conditioner In Your washing machine. It’s very cheap a couple of pounds a litre and it kills the bacteria that causes the smell. My husband is incontinent at times, (due to strokes) and it removes all the smell from clothes and sheets.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/03/2025 19:30

Just a thought, @troubl3 , but does your DD eat junk. I smell bad after some foods snacks, even with anti-perspirant

BambinaCucina · 19/03/2025 19:45

I've not managed to read every post, but vodka is fabulous for removing BO smells.

And don't use too much detergent.

HappyAsASandboy · 19/03/2025 20:28

Wash at 40° with powder not liquid. Something old school like Daz or Surf powder. And add Dettol Laundry Cleanser or own brand equivalent to every wash.

These two things help the clothes. A bar of ordinary soap will help the child!

Familysquabbles23 · 20/03/2025 06:08

Another vote for Mitchum roll on, it's the only thing that keeps sweat smell at bay.
Soda crystals in the wash and vinegar prewash also helps remove smell.from clothes.

LuckyShark · 20/03/2025 06:54

As per PP vodka works, also hand sanitiser sprays as well which are pretty cheap and widely available now.

I find surgical spirit (easily found in chemists) works really well on BO. Spray on and leave for 30mins then wash. I'd probably add vinegar to the wash as well, and wash at 40.
I buy a lot of vintage or 2nd hand clothes so I do a lot of trying to get the smell out washes

It's also fantastic on smelly trainers or shoes/slippers. I used it to rescue DH birkinstocks which he'd got wet and then continued to wear in the heat. They were vile, but sprayed with Surgical spirit the smell came out.

Oh OP I could write this and my daughter is now 16 and this has been ongoing since she was 13.
To start I got the overnight deodorant that reduces the sweating.
Next I use the dettol laundry sanitiser in the wash, pink stuff oxi action stain remover spray on all sweaty areas and leave to sit for a while as per PP suggestions.
Then was on 40 degrees.
Given what young ones are like now, the last thing I want for her is to be walking about school smelling like stale sweat.
Good luck OP. Plenty of good suggestions here x

Thought I’d pop back with an update! The good weather has helped me out and washing has been out on the line. The gym wash has arrived and I’ve done a few loads with it. The bad smell has gone, but I’m not taken with the smell it leaves, but it’s better than my daughter’s clothes smelling. Think I will start using it just for the clothes that require it, rather than everything.
we've also purchased bar soap for in the shower and I have emphasised that dd must use a flannel. It’s too soon to say the issues have resolved, but so far improvement has been seen! thank you everyone!

Same problem in my house.
It sounds weird but honestly try freezing things for 48 hours before washing. Makes a massive difference. Seems to kill the bacteria

potenial · 21/03/2025 14:00

40 degree wash as standard!
Make sure your washing machine is clean - you can get a cheap cleaner sachet from home bargains, and run it on a really hot wash to ensure it's clean and running properly.

If it's white school shirts that're the main culprit, put them in a bucket of vanish before washing them. If you're washing on a Friday after the school week, she pops all her shirts in the bucket when she gets home at 4, and then you wash them (at 40 degrees), at about six, after they've had a soak for two hours.

I'd also switch up what you use for washing - if you're using gel, switch to powder for a bit. And maybe try to miss a week or two of using fabric softener to see if it makes a difference, if you can't stand washing without one, then switch brand and scent to see if that makes a difference.

Daftapath · 21/03/2025 16:20

Glad the gymwash worked. I use my normal detergent in the machine once I’ve done the soak with gymwash to get rid of the smell. I haven’t had to soak anything a second time yet but will see what summer brings!

AnotherLongtimelurker · 21/03/2025 16:35

2 teenage boys at home - I wash white cotton school shirts at 75 degrees. I never wash anything (except for wool) less than 60 that my boys have worn.

Pollyanna87 · 21/03/2025 16:53

I had the same problem at her age, it was awful. There was a special kind of deodorant I would put on at night time (sorry, can’t remember what exactly it was) that did help but eventually it was too painful to my skin to use, felt like my skin was burning. After that, I thankfully grew out of it.

I loathe the judgement some people have that anyone with BO is unclean. Sympathy to your daughter.

SchoolNightWine · 21/03/2025 17:38

Wash armpits with imperial leather soap.
Spray sweaty areas of clothes with vinegar spray before putting in the wash.
Use bio powder/liquid.
Wash at 40 degrees.

Thisismetooaswell · 24/03/2025 16:22

I didn't read all the answers but no way would I waste vodka when white vinegar is 29p!!!

Justontherightsideofnormal · 19/06/2025 18:07

My advice.
40 degrees or 60 if allows initially to eradicate the bacteria using:
halo wash liquid (expensive but worth it)
dettol laundry sanitizer instead of fabric conditioner
add soda crystals
a long wash each time. The secret is to get rid of the lingering bacteria.

Mitchum deodorant
Detol bar soap.
these points above will completely solve the issues.
good luck

looselegs · 19/06/2025 18:20

White vinegar, sprayed on the armpits before washing. Used to use it for my sons shirts

MayaPinion · 19/06/2025 18:27

Also recommend line drying - great in this weather, and dry until the clothes are bone dry.

Newtess · 19/06/2025 20:12

Use Mitchum roll on and wash off with Radox shower gel. You'll get no stains then.
