Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

troubl3 · 17/03/2025 17:16

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

Apologies if already mentioned

  • Dove Maximum protection - i must have tried 20 different sprays/roll ons and this is excellent.
  • Making sure she actually uses a shower puff or tool of choice in the shower to gently scrub the underarms.
DaffodilsGalore · 17/03/2025 19:20

Going down the deodorant route, Fussy is great to avoid bad smells! Much better than anti perspirant ime

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 17/03/2025 19:22

@troubl3 buy the cheapest supermarket vodka and pour it on to the armpits inside and out, make sure the area is saturated. Let the items soak over night and then wash with biological powder on the longest cotton wash at 40 degrees. This method does work, I have used it with success on teen sons sports kits, school shirts etc etc.

Thank you so much everyone. So many useful tips. I have ordered some of the gymwash to give it a try. Washing machine will be set to 40 from now on. Eco wash will get a turn when I have time for a longer wash (think it takes 2.5hrs though!) Will get myself some vinegar/vodka to try and have passed on the hygiene suggestions! hibiscrub/bar soap, flannel, dry and deodorant before bed from now on.
I really appreciate all the help 😊

Tbh once the smell sets it is almost impossible to get it out.
Was whites at 60 and all else at 40.
But before that buy her new stiff as old one will be very very hard to save.
I never managed that.
It smells ok untill you spwnd 2h in it. Then bad smell starts creeping back

TiredArse · 17/03/2025 19:27

Zoflora (or similar disinfectant) works well.

iamnotgoogle · 17/03/2025 19:28

Another vote for bar soap (I religiously take it on holiday just in case) and Nuud deodorant. It's a cream you apply every 3-5 days and is a complete game changer!

Bunnycat101 · 17/03/2025 19:30

Does she have armpit hair? I have found with my husband that if he’s a bit pongy, it’s often the hair and not his skin itself that is a problem. He has also found that some deodorants make it worse not better.

fiorentina · 17/03/2025 19:30

Dettol antibacterial combined with Ariel and no fabric softener. Washing clothes daily too eg they aren’t sat with BO smells in the laundry basket.

Could it be something she eats that exacerbated it though as I find some foods make me smell worse - think onions and garlic.

Dhokotera · 17/03/2025 19:32

Make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water and apply on pits three times a week for a month for five minutes . That should resolve the odour. Repeat as necessary till it’s completely gone.

Loloj · 17/03/2025 19:33

Dettol bar soap is good.

Strictlymad · 17/03/2025 19:33

Deffo 40 degrees and a cup of vinegar in the softener drawer. Can pre soak in a bit if bicarb too

Cattery · 17/03/2025 19:34

Mitchum roll on deodorant and wash at 60. 30 is useless for something like this

laterplease · 17/03/2025 19:36

Try Gymwash washing powder - buy online at gymwash.com - works really well on BO smelly sports wear. Can use it to presoak and wash. I use it on everything and suitable for sensitive skin.

Rabbitreef · 17/03/2025 19:36

I was also say that you need to be washing at 40 x

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 17/03/2025 19:36

I read this on the AMA thread on laundry detergents
Vinegar is an efficient fabric softener but it is not great for any rubber hoses, seals etc in your machine

Ohnobackagain · 17/03/2025 19:37

Yes @troubl3 30 degrees is no good for pants, socks and clothes in contact with armpits. I only wash outer layer items that’ve been lightly used at 30.

NowYouSee · 17/03/2025 19:40

Echo Hibiscrub BUT you must leave it on a few mins to let it work. It does have a strong smell though. Only twice a week. For in between dettox bar soap is good - properly wash though with a flannel that is then dried and washed.

Stain remover powder- Astonish, Oxy, whatever in the drum. White vinegar as fabric softener. Wash at 40 not 30.

And get her to use bar soap and something abrasive like a flannel or brush under her arms. Fine to use shower gel afterwards, but alone it wouldn't shift it.

Is she using spray or cream antiperspirant?

This is really good advice!

make sure she is using a flannel or brush to wash her underarms. Also, I have found https://nuudcare.co.uk/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkN--BhDkARIsAD_mnIrZ4hRmC8sKreNB_CSbD7WAptu728aZRbKShaFF8zbLkESKBdp0J5IaAiM4EALw_wcB
to be absolutely amazing. To the point my clothes have stopped smelling and I only need to use it once every 3 days

i hope you find a solution x

I have tried stain remover, but not vinegar. Does that not smell equally bad?

Spray vinegar solution (1 part vinegar, 2 parts water) after washing and preferably dry outside in the breeze, everything comes back in smelling like fresh air, not vinegar. And honestly, I learnt that method after my 1 year old contracted a vommitting/diahorea virus at nursery and did her business over every soft firnishing I owned x

Karistyleaftea · 17/03/2025 19:43

Another vote for 40 degree temp wash and Dettol laundy liquid.
Try it without fabric condition, scent boosters etc as I don't think they really help .

AngryLikeHades · 17/03/2025 19:44

As others have said: washing soda crystals in abundance and with some clothes I'd wash at 60°, maybe hotter if they will stand it.

PaintedPottery · 17/03/2025 19:44

I use the Dettol laundry cleanser or a Fabulosa one if I can find it. Also, after washing and drying I spray the armpit area of the items with a liquid hand sanitiser.

HScully · 17/03/2025 19:48

You've had some good suggestions here, I find oxy action good, also the dettol but for me I find washing for a longer cycle at least 2 hours. Use a biological power, gels and liquids are rubbish. Also don't use fabric conditioner they trap the bacteria in and and you just end up with a BO fabric conditioner mix which stinks.

Teenie22 · 17/03/2025 19:48

Try a good deodorant and put on immediately after showering also, stops the smell developing in the first instance.

Caulidop · 17/03/2025 19:49

I use Dr Beckmann's deodorant and
sweat remover spray before washing and find it really effective at removing build up/lingering smell. You can also get a liquid to add to the wash (i found the smell a little strong with this though, although you can do an extra rinse i suppose). Perspirex is good for controlling sweating if she is finding it is excessive, there's a gentle version and one application lasts a few days (still use normal antiperspirant too).
