Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

my colleague was going on about his feet stinking and I said have you tried soap, cotton socks etc. blank face from him and “I just let the shower gel run down in the shower?” Sweat and antiperspirant needs friction to get off

@buffyfaith this sort of thing is apparently very common, the belief that standing in the shower with soapy water is sufficient. It’s bloody gross. Twice I’ve been somewhere where people took off their shoes and the stench was unbelievable. Don’t these people have noses? Not having a sense of smell is rare I think, so how do people manage?

Mumandgrandma85 · 18/03/2025 00:40

I use white vinegar and baking soda pre soak and then wash xx

I have no idea. I love washing my feet Grin feels nice when they’re really clean. Also ears, neck, belly button… actively wash all of them

Back on the laundry, I've discovered hunting wash to be the absolute best smell remover for washing. It's intended to completely remove the smell of human from clothes so that game don't get spooked. No one in this house hunts but when the synthetic shirts get a bit whiffy even after washing they get a run with this and they come out absolutely smell free, and one bottle lasts ages because it's only used occasionally

GlowOrb · 18/03/2025 04:18

The bacteria in the pits creates the BO. Try getting small antiseptic wipes and ask her to swipe her pits before she applies her antiperspirant or deodorant in the morning. If she has armpit hair, depilate to minimize sweaty build-up.

YourWildAmberSloth · 18/03/2025 08:21

How much does she sweat, could there be an underlying medical problem. Either that or you need to look at her deodorant which clearly isn't working. Laundry tips are useful, but the real issue needs to be addressed, she shouldn't smell of BO if her deodorant is working and it shouldn't be so bad that clothes need to be thrown away.

Can you please link or give a brand for this hunting wash? Can’t see anything obvious on Amazon. Thanks

Thank you so much everyone. So many useful tips. I have ordered some of the gymwash to give it a try. Washing machine will be set to 40 from now on. Eco wash will get a turn when I have time for a longer wash (think it takes 2.5hrs though!) Will get myself some vinegar/vodka to try and have passed on the hygiene suggestions! hibiscrub/bar soap, flannel, dry and deodorant before bed from now on.
I really appreciate all the help 😊

Let us know how it goes op!

What about halo sports wash or persil wonder wash odour defy followed by a laundry cleanser .

Feelinghurt2 · 18/03/2025 18:07

Probably not very helpful because you often can't choose the material children's school uniform is made from....but since being menopausal and have horrid hot flushes I have found wearing tops made of cotton and cotton alone has made a big difference to me. If I wear anything man made (i.e nylon, polyester, etc), the stinky armpit smell that comes with the dreaded sweats seem to stick to the man made fibre so much more. Cotton made clothes let your skin breathe so much more. I understand that this might not help with the school uniform type clothes (especially PE kits) but tops worn at home made of pure cotton might help a bit. I feel your pain...it's a nightmare. It's as if no amount of washing your bod and deodorising makes any difference sometimes. Is she using a deodorant that is a combined deodorant and antiperspirant in one? That's been a game changer for me. It's hard to buy women's ones these days so I buy men's roll on antiperspirant + deodorant and it seems so much more powerful.

Feelinghurt2 · 18/03/2025 18:12

PS Not at all eco friendly I know but if I don't wash my fifteen year old boy's school shirts at 60 degrees they still stink.

Lifestooshort71 · 18/03/2025 18:15

My daughter uses Halo sports detergent from Sainsbury's for GS's smelly shirts - works well!

FondantFancyFan · 18/03/2025 18:15

Your dd should shower using dettol or anti bacterial soap instead of shower gel & then use mitchum roll on deodorant.

Wash everything on a higher temperature and use an anti bacterial rewash like dettol as well.

Sallyssn · 18/03/2025 18:19

I use neat dettol in my sons wash!
Just a capful at 40degrees.
He has hyperhydrosis.

Wooky073 · 18/03/2025 18:21

There are a few possible causes.

  1. What is the fabric? Natural fibres eg cotton will wash fine but some man made fibres eg polyester trap bacteria despite washing. So it seems clean but once warn and warmed up the old BO reactives making it smell ripe. I only ever buy natural fabrics for this reason or at a push 50/50 with natural fibres.
  2. What do you use in the wash to kill off the bacteria? I recommend biological detegent or non-bio as long as you also use something to kill the bacteria. So eg detol or zoflora or something similar. For whites also Nappysan is good for killing bacteria and making things white. Also the vanish oxy action (or any non-branded similar product)
  3. The final action you could use is cheapo vodka - spray on and it dries and takes out the smell.

I do all of the above and no longer have trapped smells !
The only other thing I can think of is that under arm hairs do trap BO so shave and use a deo or one of those newer deos which neutralise the BO like the crystal salt sticks. Hope that helps ! :)

pollymere · 18/03/2025 18:26

I use vanish liquid on armpits then leave on as long as possible before rinsing and washing as normal. Biological detergent and scent boosters help tackle the smells too.

ColdWaterDipper · 18/03/2025 18:33

My sons (13 & 11) are very sporty and that polyester sports top fabric really stinks after they’ve done an hour of endurance training or whatever. I squirt cheap white vinegar directly onto the armpits of each top and let it soak right in, then wash on a synthetics wash at 40 degrees. They aren’t too stinky (yet) in terms of normal clothes but I will start washing their school shirts at 60 I think when needed. I wash
most stuff on a quick wash at 30 degrees normally 😱

TamborineGal · 18/03/2025 18:37

HNRTFT
White vinegar, half a cup, bio wash detergent, minimum 40' wash

Yes to the Dettol laundry disinfectant, that stuff is amazing, it stops DH's sports kit smelling and that's a challenge for any product 😁 Mitchum deodorants are great, agree with the pp who mentioned bar soap as well rather than shower gel. Something really simple (Simple actually sell one) like Imperial Leather not one of the ones with added moisturisers or oils. Are her clothes natural fibres as far as possible? Acrylics pick up and hang on to smells really easily and you can usually treat cotton fibres a bit more roughly when washing them as well.

Edited

Agree about Mitchum antiperspirants.

RebeccaRedhat · 18/03/2025 18:42

I've been using those pods with added febreeze and also filling the softener pot of my washing machine. Clothes smell good.

Holidayfix · 18/03/2025 18:47

Spraying the armpits with white vinegar and leaving for an hour or so before washing solved this issue for my teen DSs. I do it as I put the shirts in the machine and switch it on later

Worrywort23 · 18/03/2025 18:49

If nothing already suggested works you might like to try a deodorant called Perspirex.
My daughter has a period of extreme BO during puberty. She could have a shower and the BO would be back within the hour. The doctor said that it could be caused by hormonal changes and recommended this deodorant.
It is faffy. You have to apply it at night to completely clean and dry armpits, then lie with your arms over your head until it dries. It sometimes causes a stinging sensation especially if your armpits are not completely dry, but it worked! There was no longer any smell and she used it for about 6 months until the hormones settled down and she had no further trouble after that.

Single50something · 18/03/2025 19:12

As well as trying dettol laundry stuff.. which is brilliant..which deodorant does she use?
When I used the big brands such as sure or mitchum I found my clothes took on a sweaty smell..horrible. I changed to Wild a couple of years ago and never smell sweaty and my clothes never do either. Def worth a try. I find it brilliant...and I was a sweaty betty before.

Sharptonguedwoman · 18/03/2025 19:18

Two thoughts: See the Dr and check it isn't hyper-hidrosis (excess sweating). There are super-strong deodorants that can help. They cost quite a lot, £7 plus but are worth it. Good luck. My DD has grown out of it, fortunately.
As others have said, always a 40 deg wash and I'd put cottons and polycottons on at 60.
