The neighbour and the EV charger

DH has an electric car, and had a charger installed at home on Friday. It cost him £1200.

Today, neighbour (who we are fairly friendly with, in a neighbourly way) has messaged me to ask if we would mind if they used it from time to time. I think she’s being a CF and this will be a slippery slope. Plus it’s on our driveway so we would have to move our cars. Also, I know it isn’t expensive but it’s going onto our bill.

YABU - let them use the charger
YANBU - they need to get their own

Supremely cheeky! Why doesn’t she just connect a cable to split off the leccy supply from yours to hers while she’s at it?

Pippyls67 · 18/03/2025 00:15

I’d say yes only if you can use her car from time to time. Bet she won’t agree to that!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 18/03/2025 00:23

Gosh, wome people have no shame.

Not to mention the admin of billing her/chasing payment, asking her to move her car etc.
Well done for saying No OP.

@intrepidgiraffe no, knowing her I know she meant for free 😂 she is ballsy.

I will just send across the details of the person that did ours. I will also be watching the ring doorbell to check they aren’t doing it when we aren’t here 😂

Isn't your lockable then? 🤔

IainTorontoNSW · 18/03/2025 06:42

If they feel they can afford the on-cost of an EV, let them also buy their own charging choices.

Definitely don’t share one! It will become a huge inconvenience and cost to you especially when the other neighbours find out! I would be getting some kind of lock over it too bc they will likely use it when you’re not there. Yes you can see them on your ring doorbell but you can actually stop it happening. My friend has had so many problems with random people using hers, she’s currently having some kind of contraption put into the wall that you need a key to open. Like this Ev lockbox

Worth telling your friend that you can digitally lock it from the app the charging app that is you don’t need to go to these measures

Mookie81 · 18/03/2025 07:52

Get a lock 🔐.
I'm waiting for an update with her response to 'no'. 😂

laraitopbanana · 18/03/2025 07:54

No. She might need your garden and your water from time to time too.
p’us if the electricity cost goes higher…? And how do you monitor who’s used it? What if she has a friend that needs it?

endless road of No(s) here. Don’t go there.

Madness isn’t it?

I can't believe there are so many CF electricity thieves someone's created an almost dragons den wonder to lock it

It's 2025.

If an EV charging point isn't controlled by an app for secure access (which is the easy bit) then how the hell are all those EVs supposed to charge when everyone has one (which is the hard bit) ?

Sorry. Nothing I have seen since the C5 hit the market in 1984 has changed my view that the UK has no interest in EVs. Because ... well actions really.

Interesting. The one we have requires the use of a key card which activates it - i assumed they would all have some kind of security measures but obviously not

SmoothEncounter · 18/03/2025 21:55

@DaNightCreeperwell done you!!

Caroparo52 · 19/03/2025 15:28

Could you in exchange pop over to hers for a weekly use of the bathtub and whilst there put a quick load in her washer... and could she bring the clothes back to you folded and ironed.... see where this is going?

Alittlebit9 · 17/03/2025 08:43

Thanks everyone. I ended up saying we would be using it overnight, and it’s too expensive in the day, but gave them the details of the people who installed it 😬 I def find it awkward saying no.

@Alittlebit9 did she reply? Was it awkward?

Alittlebit9 · 10/09/2025 09:28

@Thunderpants88 haha oh this feels a lifetime ago now! I can’t remember the response but we are fine! They now have 2 EVs and have still yet to have a charger installed, they are still doing it via a 3 pin plug out the window and they haven’t asked to use ours since 😂

Wow it’s hardcore to buy two EVS and go to the hassle of charging them out the window!

good on you for standing your ground and glad it’s not awkward. Nipping things in the bud early on is usually the smart move 👏🏻
