The neighbour and the EV charger

DH has an electric car, and had a charger installed at home on Friday. It cost him £1200.

Today, neighbour (who we are fairly friendly with, in a neighbourly way) has messaged me to ask if we would mind if they used it from time to time. I think she’s being a CF and this will be a slippery slope. Plus it’s on our driveway so we would have to move our cars. Also, I know it isn’t expensive but it’s going onto our bill.

YABU - let them use the charger
YANBU - they need to get their own

@intrepidgiraffe no, knowing her I know she meant for free 😂 she is ballsy.

I will just send across the details of the person that did ours. I will also be watching the ring doorbell to check they aren’t doing it when we aren’t here 😂

@Alittlebit9 does your charger link to an app? Some do and you can set what hours they work. We do this as we have an off peak electricity tariff so we can plug the car in when we get home but it won’t actually start charging until midnight when the cheap rate starts. This way if she does try to charge while you’re out she won’t be able to.

Alittlebit9 · 16/03/2025 21:45

Thanks everyone - I’m sure DH is on the ball (I’m still a diesel person at the moment!) but will make sure the app is locked.

So cheeky.

We have a charger for our hybrid cars. A really close and longtime friend of mine visited recently in her EV and I actually had to fight with her to get her to agree to plug her car in for a while before she set off home again.

Your neighbour is a CF and the only way to deal with these people is to be as forward with them as they are with you.

Namechangedasouting987 · 16/03/2025 21:43

Err no.
Our EV charger is lockable. Make sure yours is too!

Absolutely lock it when not in use, if it doesn’t have a lock it will have an option to turn it off at the mains.

Noshowlomo · 16/03/2025 21:53

Very cheeky of her to ask

Didimum · 16/03/2025 21:57

Roundaboot · 16/03/2025 21:36

Absolutely not! Our electricity bill has significantly increased since getting a charger (still less than diesel though!) so no way would I let anyone other than a guest use it.

Do you charge on the lowest overnight tariff?

WhatDidIComeInThisRoomFor · 16/03/2025 21:59

She didn’t hang around before asking did she?!

but it’s your DH’s car and charger so you can just say “sorry, the EV is all DH’s area and he’s not up for a sharing arrangement”

it is really cheeky because yes you could bill her for her electric usage to charge her car but your DH is the one who paid out £1200 up front to install the charger. It would only be fair if he charged her more to recoup some of his initial outlay.

Roundaboot · 16/03/2025 21:59

Didimum · 16/03/2025 21:57

Yes. DP does a lot of driving for work though so sometimes has to charge outside those times too.

Alittlebit9 · 16/03/2025 22:00

@WhatDidIComeInThisRoomFor this is what made me laugh! I messaged on Friday to say oh just to let you know it’s being installed today so there might be a bit of drilling, won’t take long! She replied with some jokey comment about letting them use it to make up for the noise so I knew it was coming 😂

You can get locks for them. I suggest you have one fitted.

That’s strange. We drive ours a great deal and hasn’t increased ours at all.

If they have got an electric car, how do they charge it now?

Topsyturvy78 · 16/03/2025 22:02

No way you let one do it they'll all want to do it. It's not just the cost of the electric there's maintenance costs as well.

CavaInTheSun · 16/03/2025 22:03

I'd just say it would be too complicated to work out how to charge them fairly so it won't work, then send the details of who installed it.

Admire her balls!

You do realise.that can’t possibly be true don’t you. All electrical devices (including cars) that use electricity cost money when they are turned on

Alittlebit9 · 16/03/2025 22:04

@Shinyandnew1 there’s a couple of chargers in our town, about a 7 min drive. But costs about £20 for a full charge.

Thisisittheapocalypse · 16/03/2025 22:05

I would make it a firm 'No' and nip any further requests now.

Tallyrand · 16/03/2025 22:05

That's wild someone would even ask that.

I have an overnight tariff but if some CF neighbour charged during the day it would cost me something like £15 each time.

Would you just dish out £15 to every neighbour that knocked on your door asking for it from "time to time"?

Which is why she wants you to pay for it

whynotwhatknot · 16/03/2025 22:09

she shoul have worked out how to charge an ev before she bought one

cheeky fuck

Minimally, not noticeable in general. It’s something like £8 a month, charging every day. That poster claims ‘significantly’.

Ohblahdeeiblahdoe · 16/03/2025 22:13

How does she charge her car atm?

samarrange · 16/03/2025 22:13

Doesn't everyone who buys an EV also get a charger installed (unless perhaps they live in a flat with communal arrangements)?

Our friends with an EV say that charging at home can be amazingly cheap (the app bids for how much they want to pay, or something, because it doesn't matter when it charges between 9pm and 7am), whereas public chargers tend to be much more expensive. They reckon their home charger paid for itself in a year or so.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/03/2025 22:14

This is where no is a complete sentence

No there are few incentives for charger installation these days. We use a granny charger instead but I don’t charge much. Granny charger being EV charger in a normal outdoor socket.
