The neighbour and the EV charger

DH has an electric car, and had a charger installed at home on Friday. It cost him £1200.

Today, neighbour (who we are fairly friendly with, in a neighbourly way) has messaged me to ask if we would mind if they used it from time to time. I think she’s being a CF and this will be a slippery slope. Plus it’s on our driveway so we would have to move our cars. Also, I know it isn’t expensive but it’s going onto our bill.

YABU - let them use the charger
YANBU - they need to get their own

Don’t be ridiculous. Would you pay for her petrol if she asked you to. Do not say yes, she will be forever asking

outerspacepotato · 16/03/2025 21:34

Fuck no!

BoredZelda · 16/03/2025 21:34

What a bizarre request. Surely a simple no would suffice?

Alittlebit9 · 16/03/2025 21:35

It was the breezy way she asked, it made me feel like I was being harsh saying no! I haven’t even replied yet.

Also, we have a fair few neighbours on our street with EV’s, and I’m sure it would become a free for all..

No way!! CF

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/03/2025 21:35

Absolutely not. Give her details of how you got yours installed and let them sort themselves out.

Jshrbt · 16/03/2025 21:35

I’d say no, I also think it’s a slippery slope and time to time likely will mean a lot

HappiestSleeping · 16/03/2025 21:35

Is say it was fine at £50 per recharge.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 16/03/2025 21:35

Ooo it's so awkward of her to ask 😭

Yanbu, I'd say no, sorry 😐

Roundaboot · 16/03/2025 21:36

Absolutely not! Our electricity bill has significantly increased since getting a charger (still less than diesel though!) so no way would I let anyone other than a guest use it.

Devianinc · 16/03/2025 21:37

Omg, just say no.what balls this person has.

Threeandahalf · 16/03/2025 21:37

Absolutely not. Do you have an app? Make sure it's set just to charge when you allow it , otherwise she might decide to use it when you're out.

Cnidarian · 16/03/2025 21:37

Definitely not as a regular thing! We used our neighbour's once (next door and the cable reaches so not need to move car) in the couple of weeks we were waiting to get ours installed (by a company same neighbour worked with) and paid for it. But as a hey drop by any time whenever you like, no way!

Talipesmum · 16/03/2025 21:37

I’d say “Sorry, would rather not get into that but it’s a great idea to get one installed, would you like the details of our person? Or I think x y and z have them if you want to find out who their installers were?”

intrepidgiraffe · 16/03/2025 21:38

We used to let our neighbour use ours - app with the charger meant we knew how much each charge cost and we billed her and she paid us back - are you sure this isn’t what your neighbour meant?

Devianinc · 16/03/2025 21:38

Omg, just say no.what balls this person has.

It’s just amazing what people try to get away with and all behind innocent eyes. Yuck

Alittlebit9 · 16/03/2025 21:39

@intrepidgiraffe no, knowing her I know she meant for free 😂 she is ballsy.

I will just send across the details of the person that did ours. I will also be watching the ring doorbell to check they aren’t doing it when we aren’t here 😂

hay How about we do a swap? When my in-laws come up, could they stay with you for a few days - it’d be much easy for us and it would only be from time to time. They’re easy to feed breakfast, just the full English will do with builders tea. What do you reckon?

LittleMonks11 · 16/03/2025 21:40

Jeez Louise

it’s a hard no from me

Mt563 · 16/03/2025 21:41

Did they offer to pay? If so, I don't really see the problem and you're free to say no. Doesn't hurt to ask (rude if expected it free)

Pedallleur · 16/03/2025 21:41

If they are prepared to repay you and IF they are having their own fitted soon then yes but we know it won't happen like that.

haufbiskiy · 16/03/2025 21:42

What type of charger is it. If it’s a zappi you can set it to only charge when you allow it to in your phone

SerendipityJane · 16/03/2025 21:42

There seems to be a market for some sort of Uber for chargers. I bet there already is in the US.

Hearmenow23 · 16/03/2025 21:43

It's their car sitting on your drive all night too. Fuck. That. Use a supermarket like everyone else.

Namechangedasouting987 · 16/03/2025 21:43

Err no.
Our EV charger is lockable. Make sure yours is too!
