US democracy is about to die

... So many indicators for this, the most recent is Trump calling for the DoJ to go after his enemies:

Dear American friends, I hope you find a peaceful way out of this. As for us here, I can only hope we keep the contagion at bay.

An appropriate and proportionate response would be to criticise, answer back, refute etc. not expel!

And by the way, Breitbart... never biased is it?

If America bans gender neutral bathrooms I’ll book a holiday there

You won't be able to get there though as plane bathrooms are gender neutral.

I am no Trump defender and he may indeed have terrible and huge plans for democracy... But the idea that his goal is to declare martial law doesn't make sense. There would be a civil war immediately.

Actually, maybe just a coup because the last thing MAGA supporters want is more government control....

But Trump said many times that he wanted to militarise the police.Trump declared a national emergency which required the use of the armed forces in January.

There's the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act which gives the President emergency powers to use the military against citizens. He's sacked military leaders and is replacing them with yes men.

He can convince the MAGAs by telling them he's doing it to get rid off immigrants. As you can see above, Americans think he's trying to get rid off terrorists. They don't see it as him eroding basic rights.

That's what 99% of diplomacy is about though. That's the job.

Are you a gang member OP?

Well according to the Alien Enemies act the OP doesn't have to be one, she just has to be suspected ( and be older than 14). And from a country that the US is curretly at war with.
Which as far as I know is not Venezuela.
Thankfully there are still judges who are not afraid to stand up to Trump.

StandFirm · 16/03/2025 14:13

And it's not 'tit for tat' - if someone offends you you answer, you engage with them.

only if its relevent to a cause etc, i dont see how just slandering or libel would help any cause other than name calling

I truly think part of the problem is how civic education has been completely neglected these past decades. Understanding what institutions do and how democracy works really should be mandatory for any school leaver. I'm always appalled at how little understanding there is out there on the subject. I happen to care about this topic but I see many don't.

but what if what they say does not deserves a response if they cannot put forward a logical argument or debate on why they think trump is x, any one can spout x but to put forward a proper debate then its worth considering ?

but considering what its being used for then why is that a bad thing ?

It is a bad thing because deporting people without due process is against the law.
One of the man was deported because he just had the wrong tattoos.

I am not a diplomat but the whole purpose of diplomacy is to resolve disputes and manage relationships. Simply expelling the representative of a friendly state (there is no war between the US and SA) is a grave move and I would argue a very OTT one for what is an alleged controversial statement.
Plus let's face it, SA still has the scars of the Apartheid. Of course they can't be too pleased with the direction of travel in the US.

Bannon was the head of Breitbart news. It's a MAGA mouthpiece.

Yarvin is a scary character, highlighting that one can be intelligent on paper but that is not applied effectively to reality. His theories on removing democracy to be replaced with a "CEO" who imposes actions could be considered simply far right theorising but the fear is that he is closely influencing key players (Vance, Musk, Peter Thiel, ultimately Trump) and we are now increasingly seeing elements of his theories come into play.

I would love to see the Democrats mobilise but this doesn't seem to be happening so will be interesting how the RoW holds their ground.

I'm not typically one to catastrophise. I like pragmatic solutions. But I do find myself seeing increasing similarities between the Handmaids Tale and current US reality (extremely rich, powerful, white men deciding there is a "better" way of doing things to create a new order). I like to think it's not possible to happen in reality, in today's world but I do find the similarities a little chilling.

did you researc what the person called trump, that in it self is an offence if true and if compaines can dismis people for views the adovcate on their social media then why should the president not to the same /

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/03/2025 14:24

I am concerned that Trump could get away with martial law, and MAGA will applaud because they don't consider Trump as the "govt". Hence why they are all so delighted to see the dismantling of federal agencies, Trump is dismantling a corrupt govt that doesn't work for MAGA in their opinion. The cognitive dissonance is strong with them.

Because precisely the role of a government is not the same as that of a CEO. A government has to handle whatever another state representative claims in a diplomatic manner. It is almost an irrelevance what the guy said. What matters is how the US representatives respond to those claims. I guarantee you that summarily expelling an ambassador (thus suspending diplomatic ties) is a very drastic move.
And frankly let's face it, there is a strong suspicion now that this is indeed turning into a white supremacist regime. Interesting that they take offence at that while throwing nazi salutes all over the shop.

The President of the United States (for federal martial law).
State Governors (for martial law within their states).

Breitbart is a far right news site known for having editors associating with white supremacists and spreading fake news. It is a commentary site, not a news source.
