To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

Agree! But I'm also from a small town near Manchester.. eek.
Every time i go to london (only ever central) my head is constanlty swivelling! So much more diverse and I swear everyone is taller

Statistically more attractive children get attention from teachers - reflected in grades- and potentially earning power?

I remember going home to NW town from a home county uni. It was shocking, and depressing when noted, how much more care and attention wealth let you give your looks and health. Little things too- no one carried a water bottle with them in the NW- at least not 30 years ago.

Nobody anywhere carried water 30 years ago. It wasn’t a thing.

Interestingly a school mum who moved here from Cape Town a couple of years ago said the most striking difference to her was how many disabled people we have, plus people who for want of a better word are ‘odd’. We have a lot of people who sit on benches with cans of beer half out of it, or sit vaping in their mobility school, talking to themselves.

I’m guessing she’s not from the townships in Cape Town.

WorriedMutha · 17/03/2025 08:15

A lot of it boils down to affluence and ambition. If you go to New York, you will see well groomed beautiful people. Visiting Disney in Florida I saw some head turning obesity amongst Americans.
I think you will get the ambitious well groomed in London and cities generally. I've also lived in Manchester and if you are in town on a Friday night it is like a Love Island convention. Lots of shapely girls with glossy tresses teetering around on impossibly high heels.
These threads can only ever be about generalisations but just to decry another part of the population, I stayed briefly in a Cumbrian town and the hairdresser didn't even do foil colours. Just an all over tint, roots or nothing. I didn't see many head turning balayages amongst the locals.

I’m from Wigan, not very diverse place so you often see the same sort of body shape walking around. I think a comedian mentioned it once. London, like people have said = more money and then there’s the diversity. That makes for a more attractive population.

I bet not so many Italian men have beer bellies and plumbers cleavages.

@ElleintheWoods yet on the Style and Beauty threads where out of towners want to visit London and ask for style advice they are told that they will stand out if they are smart as most Londoners dress very casually all the time.

London style is much less "done up" when going out at night than in the north or in places like Essex - the heavy contouring, curled hair, strong eyebrows look is not popular for going "out out". You can tell the Essex girls visiting for a night out for example. London night life style is much less "smart" and much more relaxed

But I'd say casual London is in general a bit more polished /fashionable (because generally younger and richer as noted). People wandering around on a Saturday in sportswear tend to be in monochrome smart leggings, top, jacket and nice sunglasses and looking a lot more put together than in a tatty joggers, big fleece, etc.

Plus where I live, there are lots of African families who have Sunday Best church clothes and look super smart at the weekend! Those women would never been in joggers and the kids will never be in a Fortnite hoodie.

RampantIvy · 17/03/2025 08:25

Visiting Disney in Florida I saw some head turning obesity amongst Americans.

Goodness, yes.

We get "Love Island" looking girls in any Northern town I have been in on a weekend evening - Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Barnsley, Leeds.

My local small South Yorkshire market town has loads of hairdressers and they all do foils and bright colours.

Slimbear · 17/03/2025 08:28

Public school? I could bet public school kids gravitate to London where the money is to be made. So public school means controlled eating at certain times -not picking up trash drinks and crisps on the way home from school everyday.

isthismylifenow · 17/03/2025 08:29

It will be the Saffa's. There are a whole bunch there and I reckon tipping the scale in the looks department. 😂

I am not ashamed to say it, but South Africans are generally good looking.

Or put this question the other way around. Then it’s very easy to see how fucked the country is economically outside London after governments since the 1980s who have focused on London and the Home Counties.

When I go outside London, to the non-affluent small towns or to the non-retirement money and non-tourist money non-picturesque small towns, so many people who look knackered and ill and ground down. Only people who live there would ever go to these places. The poverty is causing obvious ill health and disability. Much of which a thriving local economy could have avoided.

These are the consequences of a very unbalanced economy towards London and the SE. The glaring lack of decent jobs outside of the expensive metropolitan areas. Plus the high cost of living applicable all over the country has really hit people who are least able to afford it.

I disagree.

As the capital it’s only logical that London has the most investment. London carries the rest of the country financially.

In return we get cheaper houses, cleaner air etc

We are no longer in the days of going down the pit, or working in service 7 days a week. Unless you’re putting in 12 hour shifts 6 times a week, work is not ‘knackering’ and if people are overweight it’s because they’re not buying the cheap healthy food available.

RampantIvy · 17/03/2025 07:57

Well said @CurrentHun

Little things too- no one carried a water bottle with them in the NW- at least not 30 years ago.

TBH I don't understand the obsession with carrying water around with you all the time. I don't, and I am well hydrated. I can get water from the water dispenser at work, and I am otherwise not usually out of the house all day every day - just a couple of hours to shop, and don't feel the need to keep drinking all the time.

I thought it decadent then- to carry bottles of Evian, out of my student budget. But now- a lot of people I work with and know - in the Midlands- carry reusable bottles of water. We don’t have a work water dispenser and frankly I think it’s a good idea. Wish I did it too 😂

Trallala · 17/03/2025 09:03

I live in a semi rural area a very long way from London and it's very obvious when I see someone 'not from here'. That's not to say people here aren't attractive, or well groomed, but the grooming (and tweakments) on people not from here are a different level for sure.

I went to an event a minor celeb was speaking at locally, and she looked like she was from a different planet! Her skin and makeup were impeccable and she looked - I don't know - more expensive.

So yes, probably money, and having different standards to live up to!

LSTMS30555 · 17/03/2025 09:06

Op you are aware that most of Newcastle are currently in London?

They're more likely the attractive people you are seeing around; speaking from experience.

ObelixtheGaul · 17/03/2025 09:12

I'm going to chirp up for the South West, here, even though I now live in the North East, mainly because it drives me nuts that all these types of conversations ignore a chunk of the country that isn't London or up North. It's as though Devon and Cornwall only exist when you all go on holiday.

I grew up in rural Devon. People dressed according to what was practical for their surroundings. Devon people, even in the towns, tended towards the 'natural, healthy, outdoorsy' look. Less make-up (except the goth teens, a phase I went through) A LOT less fake tan, but more naturally darker skinned people who tan quickly. (Not me, sadly, but my sister goes brown opening the curtains on a sunny day).

We smile about the North/South divide, because what people REALLY mean is the South East. There are areas of Devon and Cornwall with just as little investment as the North East town I live in now. But the tourists pitch up to the pretty little villages nobody local can afford to live in any more and think everybody is rich.

JandamiHash · 16/03/2025 21:59

yep. I do think where I am (posh North Yorks) has v good looking people. Who actually say hello! I love going on a walk round these parts as I meet so many lovely people and always manage a nice chat with one or two. That would be seen as weird in London

Never seen a posh part of the north, where is that exactly? Do you go for a walk because there is literally nothing else to do? Good thing you’ve got your friendly manners to fall back on. LOL.

MK8MS · 17/03/2025 09:32

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/03/2025 16:18

Ha yes, it’s weird isn’t it? My ex is Norwegian, as is one of my oldest friends (no prizes for guessing who introduced me to the ex) so I spend a fair bit of time in Norway and Denmark. The natives always assume I’m local as I’m tall and blonde. I kind of like fitting in. Although my Norwegian/Danish isn’t great. I can say a few things very convincingly but any follow-up questions give the game away. Smile It’s better if I keep my mouth shut ha.

I live in inner London and people around where I live are definitely slimmer (and fairly fitness obsessed) and dress differently to “the provinces” Of course much of it is down to practicality. When I visit family “up North”, I always start off sneering a little at all the anoraks and boots being worn around me. Then as I step out of my car wearing my cashmere overcoat (assuming I’ve actually remembered my coat, duh?) and handmade shoes, into the rain and mud, I realise who the idiot is. That will be me! Grin

Amanda, is that you?

brunettemic · 17/03/2025 09:34

I’m from the south and live in the north west and people definitely look different between the two places. Not necessarily better looking, just different.

rainingsnoring · 17/03/2025 09:35

Lambington · 16/03/2025 09:22

Yanbu. It's the way Londoners hold themselves. Comfortable in their own skin.
They are also generally kinder and more tolerant than those in other parts of the country which comes out in their faces - a smile makes everone look more attractive than a frown.
People in the "regions" always seem to be scowling / complaining / blaming someone else. Not attractive behaviours.

This is nonsense; the opposite is true.
People in London, who may or may not be Londoners for generations, are far less friendly, helpful and cheerful looking compared to most regions.
I guess you've never been on the London Underground!

I posted about the underground. People were more than happy to help, and a few stopped to chat. No less friendly than anywhere else. It’s a myth. Just because people are in a rush, doesn’t mean they’re less friendly.

rainingsnoring · 17/03/2025 09:37

I would say that people in London tend to be better looking because of money and ethnic diversity. Brits in general, compared to other nationalities, tend to be less attractive imo.

Much less so in my experience. Generally, people are in a huge hurry in London and the pace of life can be slower outside.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 17/03/2025 09:39

I’ve long noticed this and have heard lots of jokes over the years about a Birmingham 9 being a London 7, etc etc.

I can also tell you that even a London 9 will be a 6 at best in Stockholm or Copenhagen, where a whole different Nordic scale of beauty applies Grin.

I live in rural Devon and an incomer was told to fuck off out of ‘our town’ because they (understandably) complained about dog shit on the beach.

Trust me - far less welcoming

Ddakji · 17/03/2025 09:43

Speaking as a lifelong Londoner - the tube varies. Rush hour, forget it. But outside of that, although people aren’t chatty they will certainly help if asked.

The big difference I’ve noticed is customer service in shops, especially supermarkets, where in London it’s dire and outside London cashiers are actually friendly and chatty.

I was amused by the reference to African churchgoers. Yes, the older men and women get very dressed up for church. But when we got DD baptised, we were the only white people at our local church, and most of the younger women were dressed as though they were about to go clubbing, but in white. Tiny little skintight white dresses. Their spike heels kept getting caught in the grilles in the floor of the nave. It was a very cheerful affair!
