How much for a Chinese takeaway where you are?

How much is a typical Chinese takeaway in your area. Rarely get takeaway and fancied a treat tonight. 4 adults- ordered a duck pancake starter, a dish each, a couple of rice dishes and a chow mein plus one packet of prawn crackers. £100!
I’ve cancelled the order and going to get the pair of shoes I’ve had my eyes on.
AIBU to think that’s ridiculous or is £25 per person what we are paying for takeaways these days and I’m out of touch?

I think that’s a big order and would be similar cost here in Sheffield, but I reckon our order for 2 adults 2 kids would be about £60 max, so £15 pp which I think is fine. We only order takeaway if we overlap with our tastes - I wouldn’t order 4 mains plus starters and sides as it would be way too much. Some leftovers are good but I don’t want 50% left!

Yes, I’d say so. I think a dish each is quite a lot - most people would share them between two. Duck is expensive as well!

Roast chicken for a week too 😂

Dh, and I get one each on the rare occasion we have a takeaway. Chinese food is surprisingly easy to cook yourself, although I can never quite get the onions as nice, even flash frying!

At our local (East of England) the set menu for six, including half a duck and mixed starters as well as prawn, pork, chicken and two beef mains, two XXL special fried rice and a noodles with veggies, would be £70. And even with six eaters you’d get leftovers.

£100 for four is a lot!

I promise you I’m not one of the MN teeny tinies (quite the opposite🙈) but between DD and I a main and 2 sides is more than enough! Salt & chilli tofu, vegetable chow mein and fried rice is our go to.

Yes, it seems a bit steep. We're 2 adults and a child and normally have a beef and chicken dish with rice and chips and a chicken starter and it comes in under £25 with free prawn crackers.

Live in Kent ( near Canterbury )
Prawn curry x1
Veg chow mein x1
Egg fried rice x1
Chips x1
prawn crackers x 1
spring roll x 6

serves 3 adults
£22

My cousin ordered a Chinese just for herself, no idea what she got but she said it was £30 for one person ! She lives in Watford

Whenwillthesunshine · 16/03/2025 01:51

We order for 4 adults get a chicken/pork dish each, special chow mein, pork fried rice and chips around £40

TeaAndTattoos · 16/03/2025 02:03

I’m in the north west and to get the same order as you got it would cost £69.10 that works out to £17.27 per person.

I stopped ordering Chinese about a year ago, wherever I went the quality was always awful, but I moved and now I’ve found a great one, we had two starters, a shared fake duck pancake thing, two mains and one rice to share last weekend and it was £64. I’m in the north west. It is dear, but it was a payday treat after a very dreadful month, so not a too regular thing.

Arran2024 · 16/03/2025 17:43

£70 here last night in SW London but when we are at my dad's in Ayrshire much the same take away is about £30 and they give us free vegetable spring rolls

MiddleAgedDread · 16/03/2025 17:51

I had no idea as never order it but a local restaurant that does takeaway has a half duck £22, main courses and chow mein are in the range of £7.50-£9.50 and rice £3-4 depending on type.

Speckyfourfries · 16/03/2025 20:50

About £40 for 4 of us veggies.
We get mains , sides, rices and usually some left over for the next day

sunshineandshowers40 · 16/03/2025 20:57

Half a duck is £26 at my local so that probably pushed the price up. For 5 of us (3 teens/ preteen) it's around £70.

Sparklehead · 20/03/2025 07:39

We pay about £35 when we get a Chinese takeaway for 2 adults, 2 teens. However, I also supplement with a couple of dishes I make myself, because I think my version is more tasty, or if we can’t get a particular dish that we like. So I normally make a foo-yung (egg) dish and an aubergine, pepper and potato dish. Then I also cook rice. Which, thinking about it, sort of defeats the object of ordering in a Chinese and not having to bother to cook!

GameOfJones · 20/03/2025 07:57

That doesn't surprise me. It's about £15-£20 per person here (South East) and that's without ordering crispy duck. It's also why we haven't had a chinese or an Indian takeaway in over 2 years. I refuse to pay that when it costs the same or only slightly less than having a meal out.
