How much for a Chinese takeaway where you are?

How much is a typical Chinese takeaway in your area. Rarely get takeaway and fancied a treat tonight. 4 adults- ordered a duck pancake starter, a dish each, a couple of rice dishes and a chow mein plus one packet of prawn crackers. £100!
I’ve cancelled the order and going to get the pair of shoes I’ve had my eyes on.
AIBU to think that’s ridiculous or is £25 per person what we are paying for takeaways these days and I’m out of touch?

I'm in the north of England and I would expect to pay approx.:

Duck for four: £20
Mains: £8 each
Rice: could be £2 - £6 depending on what kind, so let's go with £4 ish
Chow mein: £4
Prawn crackers: £2

So you'd be on about £66 by my reckoning.

Feelingstrange2 · 15/03/2025 19:26

Back with my local menu check...

Main courses are £7 - £9 so say £36
Chow Mein same so say £8
Rice is just under £4 - so for two rice . £8
The duck is £22 for half a duck and 12 pancakes or £11 for a quarter - so that's an expensive addition..... say £22
Crackers are £4 but they'd chuck them in free here.

So about £74 here with the half duck starter not quarter.

Probably another £10 if they chose the expensive mains like duck or king prawn.

BobbyBiscuits · 15/03/2025 19:26

Duck pancakes round my area can be really expensive, like nearly £20 for a half. Which often isn't a half, it's just shredded old crap!

I like the crispy seaweed, Singapore noodles and the prawn balls/butterfly prawns. The seaweed is about £6, and the two mains are around £8.50 each. This is quite a cheap place as it's literally just an old school takeaway.

I love vietnamese food and thai but my local ones are even more pricey as they're sit down restaurants. Morning glory which is just greens for £12!

I live in south London. Duck, prawn toast, three mains and rice, a plain noodles and crackers is about £60 from a very much average place.

tobee · 15/03/2025 19:33

SW London

From deliveroo the more reasonable Chinese has 1/4 crispy duck at £12.90 and egg fried rice is £5.20 (large)

The ludicrously priced posh place is 1/4 crispy duck £21.00 and egg fried rice is £7.60

Hardly ever get a Chinese takeaway anymore ☹️

tobee · 15/03/2025 19:39

Also some of the Chinese takeaways don't feel that Chinesy anymore. I like, for eg, more noodles to have a big bbq taste and be brownish. Now they often seem pale, steamed flavourless things.

They should be, imo:-

I live in the midlands and the last time I ordered a Chinese it was less than £30 and that was for beef fried rice, beef in black bean sauce, kids chicken balls and chips, chicken and chips and a portion of salt and pepper chips with free prawn crackers. portions are massive and we struggle to eat all of that (we all like different things).

yours seems excessive to me but its more than likely the duck - one by me (not necessarily the one we order from) that starter depending on how many pancakes is either £11.80 (6) or £21.80 (12)

IKnowAristotle · 15/03/2025 19:42

Duck? In this economy? Come on OP.

Charliechoosecarefully · 15/03/2025 19:42

We pay around £26 for two of us (and that’s when we go all out)

Potsofpetals · 15/03/2025 19:43

2 mains, 1 rice,1 noodle and 2 soups in £45

Its bloody expensive and not something we do often

Charcadet · 15/03/2025 19:44

Duck and pancakes
Sweet and sour chicken
Crispy beef
Garlic chilli chicken
Beef black bean
4 x prawn toast/wontons
12 mini spring rolls
X large special rice
Salt pepper chips
Prawn crackers
Bottle of pop

£38 meal deal. Feeds 5 plus leftovers for tomorrow :)

BeaLola · 15/03/2025 19:45

I recently collected an order for my Dad and DB - I was staggered that they had to pay for prawn crackers - at my local takeaway you get them free.

I think the duck pancake dish is what pushes price up - just yesterday we were checking out the lovely Chinese we used to go to but don't now as following a rebrand it's more £££ - quarter duck is £17:80 , half is £32:80 and whole£63.80

King prawns with ginger and spring onion is now £16;80 and special fried rice is £11:80

now we no longer use them ..

shellyleppard · 15/03/2025 19:45

Thats bonkers price!!!! I'm in the east midlands and i feed 5 of us for £40!!!!! Thats chicken curry, sweet and sour chicken, beef in oyster sauce, rice, prawn toast and free prawn crackers 😋

lucy889 · 15/03/2025 19:46

We get beef chow mein, kung po chicken, egg fried rice, salt & pepper chicken, spicy beef, prawn crackers and a big spring roll to share and it comes to £55 with delivery.

Iknowaboutpopular · 15/03/2025 19:46

Last time we (me and dh) had a Chinese, we ordered:
Mini spring rolls
Salt and pepper chips
Salt and pepper chicken
Chicken in black pepper sauce
Special chow mein
Wok fried broccoli
Prawn crackers
And it was a smidge under £40.

(Midlands)

OhCalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 15/03/2025 19:48

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/03/2025 19:53

DH and I spend about £21 on a Chinese takeaway.
We get 2 main meals, a side of chips, a portion of rice between us, and some spring rolls.
We're in the NE.

bugalugs45 · 15/03/2025 19:53

Egg fried rice £4.30
chicken chow mein £6.30

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 15/03/2025 19:54

It varies a lot around here, we order from a couple of different places depending on which region of Chinese food we fancy. Had our favourite Sichuanese last night, £60 incl fees. The second rice was a mistake, we didn’t need it, and portions were huge so we also had dinner tonight out of it, just cooked fresh rice. Favourite Cantonese is a bit cheaper, probably comes in at about £40 for 2. You can find cheaper but they’re just not as tasty.

MJBear · 15/03/2025 20:01

Yeah it is about that where we are for the 4 of us.

it’s a treat!!!

pizza delivery for all of us is more than that.

take away is not cheap. But then niether is labour nor energy and fuel.

MayaPinion · 15/03/2025 20:03

South East - about £75, but if you order it from a Chinese restaurant rather than a takeaway you’ll easily pay £100. The restaurants normally here normally charge full restaurant price (or thereabouts) but of course you don’t pay for drinks.
