How much for a Chinese takeaway where you are?

How much is a typical Chinese takeaway in your area. Rarely get takeaway and fancied a treat tonight. 4 adults- ordered a duck pancake starter, a dish each, a couple of rice dishes and a chow mein plus one packet of prawn crackers. £100!
I’ve cancelled the order and going to get the pair of shoes I’ve had my eyes on.
AIBU to think that’s ridiculous or is £25 per person what we are paying for takeaways these days and I’m out of touch?

We've just had a "munchie box"
2 x meat dishes
1 x noodles
6 X mini spring rolls
4 x ribs
1 X chips
1 X prawn crackers
£23.50

Think everything is slightly smaller than normal but it was more than enough for 2 people

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/03/2025 20:04

I think it's your duck for 4 that increased the cost.

We would order
1 mixed starter for 2 people ( ribs/chicken satay/seaweed/prawn toast )
2 chicken dishes
1 rice
1 plain noodles i.e. no bean sprouts or onion

£34 ish.

£15-20 per person, depending on how much they want to eat.

ChorusOfDisapproval · 15/03/2025 20:06

Just added up what that would come to here - roughly £80 (Cambs)

BansheeOfTheSouth · 15/03/2025 20:07

Scotland. £67/75 here if the rice dishes were just boiled/fried and not chicken/pork fried rice. Then it would be £75/85. Over 5 Chinese takeaways.

However one does a special set menu for 4 for £45 and one does a tea time special (starter, main & rice/chips) for £10. They both include prawn crackers with those orders. Duck is £20 roughly in all.

We had this delivered tonight. We're in Bromley.

£6.30 for a portion of egg fried rice is madness. I've just had a new menu delivered from my local Chinese takeaway which is very popular so they have just put their prices up. It's £2.40 for egg fried rice.

I'm in the NE of England. Usually on these threads I find the prices are fairly similar to our area, but I can't get my head around that much for rice.

Andabottleofrum · 15/03/2025 20:09

2 adults, two small children, enough food (2 starters, 3 mains, 2x rice, prawn crackers) plus leftovers for the next day- £100. But we live in Switzerland.

OP must be ordering lots!

We are in the UK and just in the north. Are we ordering more than the average person perhaps?!

Well it depends on whether the "rice dishes" are side dish sized, or full meals like char sui fried rice. If you've ordered full dishes that's basically SEVEN meals for only four adults, so yeah that's probably more than the average!

The expensive Chinese near us (also the North) that would be about £80. The cheapy one would be £60. Neither would include delivery.

christabellax · 15/03/2025 20:12

Usually about £25-30 for a starter to share , two mains and fried rice in north east Scotland , Prawn crackers complimentary …. £ 59
for 2 and I wouldn’t bother either.

You have fundamentally misunderstood takeaways.

You order more than one dish each, and then have delicious leftovers.

I hope this enriches your life.

(To be serious, where I am - North East - starters are around 3-5 and mains 6-7; I'm a single mum with one DD, so we obviously don't spend as much as the OP, but I would generally get a couple of starters, a couple of mains, and rice or noodles; I might push the boat out and get three mains so we have a good choice, and I would definitely expect there to be enough for breakfast another meal.)

Also a single mum with one DD (albeit grown up now!), we’re both leftover haters so one main between us and 2 sides is more than enough. We’re easily pleased! 🤣

Fair enough!

South East - roughly £35 for 3 (greedy!) adults. Free prawn crackers - which we throw away because we don't like them (we do ask for them not be included but...)
We've found that compared to pizza or curry, Chinese is still the cheapest takeaway, wherever we buy it from.

mimi14 · 15/03/2025 20:18

We had Chinese last night. 2 adults 2 kids, south east.
Salt and pepper chips
2 portions of sweet and sour chicken balls
Seaweed
Chicken chow mein
Special fried rice
Kung po chicken
King prawns with beansprouts
Prawn toast

£57

crossstitchingnana · 15/03/2025 20:21

That would be about £60 here. That’s why I don’t get take-always very often. Had a Chinese last week, ordered online and had a paper menu that was 5 years old. 50% increase.

Gundogday · 15/03/2025 20:21

I reckon around £50 for 3-4 adults (young adult dc), which is normally enough for seconds.

Gundogday · 15/03/2025 20:22

@Obimumkinobi i agree, it dues work out cheaper than buying pizzas etc

ThreeMagicNumber · 15/03/2025 20:23

Ordered tonight crispy shredded chicken, portion of curry sauce, large fried rice, chicken and cashew nuts and salt and chilli chips and it was 32 including delivery.

tilypu · 15/03/2025 20:24

My local charges £13 for a starter (ribs, prawn toast or spring rolls), a soup, a main and one of rice/noodles/chips. If you buy two, you get free prawn crackers.

So for 4 it would be £52 - but there's loads. Enough for two meals plus.

CrushingOnRubies · 15/03/2025 20:25

Last night sweet and sour pork, crackers, prawn toast and small fried rice was £24 incl delivery. £22 without. Large rice was £ 5.40

CoastalCalm · 15/03/2025 20:27

We usually get a set menu which is £30 and does us two meals (two of us) :

BbQ ribs
Prawn and ginger
Beef blackbean
Hong Kong sweet and sour pork
2 portions of special fried rice
Prawn crackers

Arran2024 · 15/03/2025 20:27

We just had a Chinese delivery. It cost £70. The deep fried squid alone was £17. This is sw London. It is much more expensive than an Indian.

DIRECTDORIS · 15/03/2025 20:29

we only eat chow main
that's 6.50 for beef or chicken
prawn crackers(very large bag)1.25
and its enough for 2
they also deliver for 1.50(village only)

im rural Wales in a small old fashioned Welsh village

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 15/03/2025 20:29

Probably similar prices here in Scotland, but that would be far too much food for us all so our usual order is around £50-60 for 4 adults and a teenager.

Waitinggame42023 · 15/03/2025 20:38

OP I clicked on this as I've noticed since covid that Chinese takeaway in particular has skyrocketed in price, and we don't have a really good one nearby so we rotate around several but theyre all expensive. I'd predict about £80 for what you ordered, could be up to £100. It's a shame as it used to be my favourite takeaway.

Chilliflakesontuna · 15/03/2025 20:40

4 people (two adults, two mid age children) around £40 . We live in a nice part of a deprived area 😂
