How much for a Chinese takeaway where you are?

How much is a typical Chinese takeaway in your area. Rarely get takeaway and fancied a treat tonight. 4 adults- ordered a duck pancake starter, a dish each, a couple of rice dishes and a chow mein plus one packet of prawn crackers. £100!
I’ve cancelled the order and going to get the pair of shoes I’ve had my eyes on.
AIBU to think that’s ridiculous or is £25 per person what we are paying for takeaways these days and I’m out of touch?

Hong Kong sweet and sour chicken
Honey and Chilli Chicken
Beef in Black Bean Sauce
Salt and pepper wings
Salt and pepper chips
Noodles
Curry Sauce
Usually about £40 including delivery for four people.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/03/2025 20:41

Well it’s £35 for a whole
duck here, mains are around £7.50. It racks up

Ordered tonight crispy shredded chicken, portion of curry sauce, large fried rice, chicken and cashew nuts and salt and chilli chips and it was 32 including delivery.

Sorry forgot to say, in south west Scotland.

CrushingOnRubies · 15/03/2025 20:45

Still have the menu to hand. A set menu which sort of fits your brief is £19.50 pp. just done an actual order of what you might have order I did say 1/2 a duck and it comes to £77.80 + delivery (£2) so really not much change from £80

CrushingOnRubies · 15/03/2025 20:46

Sorry South west England

princesspeppax · 15/03/2025 20:51

2 adults 3 DC average £35. West of Scotland

MadisonAvenue · 15/03/2025 20:51

We’ve had a rare treat of a Chinese takeaway tonight, between three adults.
We’re in the Midlands.

Chicken wings (6 in the container)
3 mains
1 rice
Chilli chips
Prawn crackers
£46

The bag of prawn crackers was so small compared to what they used to be, probably half the size yet twice the price.

caringcarer · 15/03/2025 20:53

We order a main each and either chips or rice and it's generally about £17-20 per person. They do give a lot of chips so if 2 of us wants chips we share hence only £17, but if one wants chips and the other rice then £20 each. They do give free prawn crackers over £30.

Mum2jenny · 15/03/2025 20:55

Takeaway meal for 4 in East Midlands from a really good Chinese restaurant, with plenty of leftovers, was just over £60, and included free prawn crackers and a bottle of beer.

user5213768943 · 15/03/2025 20:57

We are south midlands, about £80/90 for four of us at the Chinese.
Fish and chips round here is £45 for 4…I’m not particularly keen on takeaways so it makes me feel justified in spending a kings ransom in M and S - at least thats a few meals worth!

wackywombat35 · 15/03/2025 21:04

Around £40

19lottie82 · 15/03/2025 21:06

My OH gets a special curry with rice, I get a salt and chilli chicken and pinch some of his rice and curry sauce. £16 ish. With free prawn crackers.

That does both of us.

CasperGutman · 15/03/2025 21:19

For four adults I'd probably get the half duck which would be just over £20. The four main dishes would cost £8-something each average (a bit less for chicken or veggie, a bit more for duck or king prawn). If the rice dishes and chow mein are things like special fried rice, chicken chow mein they'll be priced similarly to main dishes. If they're all just plain or egg fried rice that would take £10-15 off the total. If I wanted plain rice I'd just cook it myself, as I can never stomach paying £4+ for some boiled rice. Prawn crackers will be a few quid.

Total will be between £80 and £90. City in South Wales.

PassingStranger · 15/03/2025 21:24

Buy a takeaway box in marks or asda much cheaper even if you buy a couple.

It’s just not the same though. Not even close.

Not the same on any level though

Crucible · 15/03/2025 22:42

2 X rice (not the plain stuff) and 2 x mains, £21.30. London.

Crucible · 15/03/2025 22:43

Sorry that does two adults here for two whole meals each. You could eat the lot in one sitting but it's easily split into two meals each.

Donewiththisshit · 15/03/2025 22:43

Interesting replies! We are limited to one Chinese where we live and portions aren’t huge so one dish wouldn’t really serve 2. I do think we order more than the average person though!

About £30 for 2 starters, 2 main dishes and prawn crackers.

TheChosenTwo · 15/03/2025 23:12

Around £100 here too, but it’s my favourite takeaway so we get it sometimes. It’s definitely too much food but there’s leftovers of the mains for lunch the next day, we like all the starter/appetiser bits and usually
go for a full duck as ds is a big meat eater and other than a couple of other appetiser things quite a lot of the duck is really his main.
we also like the salt a pepper squid which is about £12 each and we get 2. It’s a bit too much but 1 isn’t nearly enough.
live in the se but it’s a really good Chinese, best in the area and always busy with a queue. Although we order for delivery 😂

Oh god that’s nothing like getting a Chinese takeaway! I mean it’s probably cheaper but so is beans on toast or a marmite sandwich.

tobee · 15/03/2025 23:26

crossstitchingnana · 15/03/2025 20:21

That would be about £60 here. That’s why I don’t get take-always very often. Had a Chinese last week, ordered online and had a paper menu that was 5 years old. 50% increase.

Yes I think prices have gone up massively in the last few years.

Funnywonder · 15/03/2025 23:36

There are usually only two of us ordering, but occasionally DS1 has something and DP’s friend comes over, so for the four of us it’s about £30. That is with DP and I sharing a main. DS1 and DP’s friend usually have enough left over from their respective mains to have a decent sized portion the next day. We’re in NI. Chinese meals are generally enormous😅

Friendofdennis · 15/03/2025 23:36

Our order came to £51 the other day :
aalt and pepper chicken wings / chicken satay skewers (4) lemon chicken main/ chicken in black bean main / chicken curry and egg fried rice / large chow mein/ large egg fried rice and cola It seemed expensive but we got 7 individual meals out of it
