Why would you think it is okay to put dog shit in someone's bin?

I've recently moved into a new house. It's not in the nicest area of the city, but it could be worse. I've had a bit of a rough time of it recently and am finding adjusting to my new life difficult which is probably affecting my resilience and ability to let things go.

Our bins are collected fortnightly on the day I happen to work late. Every sodding bin day at least one arsehole chucks dog shit in it after they're emptied. This week, two arseholes have done it and both bags have burst so, yet again, I have a filthy stinking bin to clean out.

I'm angry and upset, both about the shit and the fact it's really getting to me. I can't take the bins in straight away because I have to be at work!

I am a dog owner and would never put my dogs 💩 in anyone’s bin, but I had to tell my Son that he wasn’t to do this as he thought it was ok to do, same with skips. I do think one of the problems is that there aren’t enough bins around, we have a few near shops, but it would be good to have a bin on the end of each road.

I haven't actually, I just use bins for rubbish and don't really care what's in them, don't spend time looking in them or really thinking about them.

Lucky you, obviously it does upset a lot of people though doesn’t it. I find it a bit odd to claim you have no idea why hone would mind people flinging their dog shit in their bin.
I guess you are just much cooler than everyone else though.

Noodge · 15/03/2025 07:57

I have a large dog and I'd never even contemplate doing this, however if someone put dog crap in my bin I doubt I'd notice. I never look in the bin anyway.

Member869894 · 15/03/2025 07:58

Better in my bin than on the street. It wouldn't bother me. Bins don't smell great at the best of times because they are...bins

coribells · 15/03/2025 07:58

Dont sweat the small stuff , it’s better than it being left on the pavement or anywhere else . Garbage bins smell anyways

JamJarJane · 15/03/2025 08:13

This thread is an eye opener. I'm genuinely surprised at how much people care. Bins are dirty and smelly anyway, and that's why they have lids. If the lid is down it's not an issue, surely? The idea of paying to clean the inside of a wheelie bin is baffling to me. Even a split bag at the bottom of a bin will not harm anyone and doesn't need to be dealt with. It will just dry out and crust off after a year or two.

Around my way, if a bin is not taken in and is on the pavement, it's considered fair game to pop something in it. I wouldn't do it on bin day if it's been emptied, but otherwise, if you leave your bin out on public paths then that's what happens, surely?

stayathomer · 15/03/2025 08:19

If it’s not a big deal (to the people saying it’s not a big deal) why don’t you put it in your own bin? We live rurally so have to clean bins kind of regularly because otherwise you’re attracting wild animals (and with six people and a dog they aren’t nice smelling in general, my mums bins are always clean because it’s just her and my brother).

I’ve no problem with someone putting anything in there just before it’s due to be emptied but if it’s just been emptied I’ve to pour out what they put in so I can wash it which isn’t the most fun job anyway (I love that people pay to have their bins washed out, I think that would be my guilty pleasure spend if I could spare the money!!)

The thought of leaving dog shit in the bottom of the bin for years is disgusting!

You realise that it’s not always possible to take a bin in straight away? Why does that make them ‘fair game’ for lazy bastards? When my bins are taken in they are on my property but only the other side of the fence so anyone could reach them. Does that mean anyone can use them?

i have a brown bin for garden waste
sometimes neighbours use it for their mcdonalds wrappers which annoys me so much!

If I knew who did it I’d be posting it back through their letter box!

Booksandwine80 · 15/03/2025 08:38

That’s grim and not on. I walked home from school with my daughter and we both had ice creams from the ice cream man (it’s relevant, honest!) she had a cone and I had one of the little paper tubs with a spoon. She was very smug she had no rubbish and I had nowhere to put this empty tub -no public bins on this route but lots of people’s wheelie bins on pavement as it had been bin day.

I did contemplate putting it in one of the bins but thought it was too cheeky so dog shit is an absolute no no!

LubyLoo · 15/03/2025 08:43

It’s not ok at all and is utterly revolting. When I had dogs I wouldn’t even put their poo in my bins I always used a public rubbish bin. My bins are mine. They don’t belong to the council. I paid for them.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 14/03/2025 14:37

I only ever put used poo bags in other people's bins (when out walking) if they're due to be emptied - never in one that's just been emptied (unless it's my own)

Unfortunately, some people just don't give a shit (no pun intended)

Dog owner here. I would never do this and wouldn’t at any point want anyone else’s bagged dog poo in my bin. Disgusting.
OP, you’re not being unreasonable, the gravity lock being mentioned sounds like a solution.

Can't believe you admitted to doing this. You're in the wrong here.

Icyroll · 15/03/2025 08:51

Both bags have “burst”?

really? Did they fire them in there?

The poster is saying that they put it In bins that were outside awaiting on collection on bin day

calm down

You really shouldn’t be putting anything in anyone else’s bin!

MantleStatue · 15/03/2025 08:57

Our bins are next to our garden gate and we live on a very narrow private road that the bin lorry can't get down easily, so the council sends out a little lorry with a mesh back on it that can fit. This lorry does not have those mechanical arms that lift the bin and tosses everything in. So the bin men pick out the rubbish bags themselves. We have people putting their dog poo bags in and the bin men just lift out the large bags at which point the dog poo falls to the bottom. I actually yesterday went to try and get a bin lock because the bins were emptied friday and I counted 6 dog poo bags left behind at the bottom which then have to be cleaned out by me. This happens every week and you can bet it pisses me off because it's filthy. I have even squeezed the bins into our garden behind the gate which makes access and egress really hard and people still feel it's right and proper to enter my property and dump their bloody bags.

Maybe. Or perhaps they didn't tie them up properly. Either way, poo exited bag.

Ask a neighbour to bring yours in with theirs. You can collect when you get home.
If you explain the problem (which they are prob already aware of) I’m sure they’ll help.

No, if you've taken them into your front garden they are no longer fair game. Just saying how it is round here.

I think there are probably a couple of poo bags at the bottom of my bin, or there were a while back. I never look. I just chuck my bin bags in and close the lid. I haven't died from my own scummyness yet.

Should have taken a pic because no way did two poo bags “burst” on impact! And leakage…. Not unless they literally stood over the bin and emptied the bags. Dog owners will know that leakage from poo bags let alone two separate ones just doesn’t happen

PriOn1 · 15/03/2025 09:05

I’ve often been tempted to put it in someone’s bin that is out and full (so about to be emptied) but I can’t even bring myself to do that in case I upset someone! 🤣

My guess, OP, is that they keep their own bin outside and don’t bother with keeping it clean, so it doesn’t cross their mind it would be inconvenient and unpleasant for someone else. Either that to they’re simply selfish and obnoxious and know, but just don’t care.

I understand the temptation though. Carrying a bag of poo around is naturally unpleasant, so if there’s a bin where I’m allowed to throw it, it’s always nicer. Just a pity there are some people who don’t respect other people’s property.

It depends on the bags, they can and do split. We used to use biodegradable doggy bags for scooping the litter tray when we had a cat and they sometimes split coming off the roll. Obviously we then double bagged but it did happen. They were quite thick bags so I can definitely imagine thinner ones splitting
