Why would you think it is okay to put dog shit in someone's bin?

I've recently moved into a new house. It's not in the nicest area of the city, but it could be worse. I've had a bit of a rough time of it recently and am finding adjusting to my new life difficult which is probably affecting my resilience and ability to let things go.

Our bins are collected fortnightly on the day I happen to work late. Every sodding bin day at least one arsehole chucks dog shit in it after they're emptied. This week, two arseholes have done it and both bags have burst so, yet again, I have a filthy stinking bin to clean out.

I'm angry and upset, both about the shit and the fact it's really getting to me. I can't take the bins in straight away because I have to be at work!

I’m a corner house on the main route to the local infants and juniors and I got so fed up with people letting their dogs shit on the pavement and doing nothing with it that I actually put my bin outside and a roll of poo bags. 99% now bag it and bin it in my bin. I much prefer it to dog shit lover the pavement where kids are walking.

Why do you clean out your bin?

It's a bin. It lives outside.

I clean my bin so it doesn’t smell in my garden. Our council ask us to clean our bins and even offer bin cleaning services that we can pay for.

Mudkipper · 14/03/2025 15:43

OP maybe you could persuade your council to install a dog poo bin nearby?

Is it? People actually pay to have a wheelie bin cleaned?

You learn something everyday.

mondaytosunday · 14/03/2025 15:45

So gross. I have dogs and if no public bin I take my dogs waste bag to my house to put in my own bin. I’d never use someone’s personal bin. Shame on them.

I mean I personally don't because I keep it clean by using decent bin liners. I don't even put my own dog's shit into it - I put it into a dog shit bin that is at the end of my street.

But loads of people definitely pay for this service.

Mudkipper · 14/03/2025 15:40

You’ve got a dog, haven’t you?

I haven't actually, I just use bins for rubbish and don't really care what's in them, don't spend time looking in them or really thinking about them.

Sorry - wrong thread!

I only ever put used poo bags in other people's bins (when out walking) if they're due to be emptied - never in one that's just been emptied (unless it's my own)

Unfortunately, some people just don't give a shit (no pun intended)

You shouldn’t be putting your rubbish in anyone’s private bin, that’s selfish, entitled behaviour. Carry your filthy dog shit home or wait until you find a proper dog mess receptacle. I hope someone catches you doing that in their bin, runs out and shoves your dog shit down the back of your jacket.

Dog owners are the most selfish, entitled arseholes on the planet.

Because I don't want it to stink. I have a very small yard (which faces south so warms the bin nicely on sunny days.) so if I open my living room window the smell would come in. I'd also like the possibility of sitting outside without being in the aroma of heated dog shit up to a fortnight old.

Couldn’t care less. It’s a bin. It’s for rubbish.

Sinkintotheswamp · 14/03/2025 16:47

We have to pay for our bins.

Even if it's bagged I don't want it in my bin making it smell. If a dog owner doesn't want to carry a bag of poop then they need to get a Dicky bag to make carrying it less of a faff.

I have a relative who has made a good bit of money by setting up a wheelie bin cleaning business. His son currently works for him and is set to inherit the business.

What is your address?
I've got excess bags of rubbish this week, I'll come and fling them in your bin instead then?

If there’s room, be my guest. Bin day is Thursday.

I don’t have a problem with people putting their rubbish in my bin if there’s space (although there rarely is tbf). Same with dog poo. I’d much rather it went in a bin (any bin, my bin, whatever) than in the street or bags hanging up on trees.

AllTheOtherCats · 14/03/2025 17:27

People saying that their council owns the bins and they wouldn’t care about this, that’s great, but in my area you have to buy your own wheelie bin. So it’s MY bin. And secondly, the binmen don’t ever empty the bin by tipping it up. They just reach in and pull out the black sacks. EVERYTHING has to be in a proper bin bag or they won’t take it. So if people dropped their dog poo in my bin it would be up to me to clean it out.

How is that ok?

IamALamaEatingABanana · 14/03/2025 17:34

I've caught my neighbour putting her bag of dog shit in my food waste bin!

This was after I caught her on camera not picking up her dog shit multiple times outside my home and I confronted her.

She's obviously doing it to spite me. Horrible woman.

caffelattetogo · 14/03/2025 17:39

Wouldn’t bother me but I appreciate it bothers some people. Could a neighbour bring your bin in? We bring them in for a few neighbours to stop the pavement being blocked for prams/wheelchairs etc.

SelfishPeopleEverywhere · 14/03/2025 17:50

@ArtfulBear Quite agree. People are selfish and self centred and have no care for others.

never has there been a poo scent when opening the bin.

There is ALWAYS the smell of shit when there is faecal matter in a bin. Always. Unless it is triple bagged and sprayed with scent neutraliser.

It is not OK to leave your dogs shit in another persons bin because it is a form of fly tipping and a disgusting one at that.

Agree it is also not ok to put it in a bin in the expectation it is to be emptied because
our local authority like @Vkad says will only take stuff in a black back. If they open the bin and find free floating stuff (like a dog poo bag) they refuse to take it.

Sometimes if they don't notice because it is small and of low weight it falls to the bottom of the bin down the back of the bin backs and doesnt' actually get emptied out. So then you have to fish it out and either dispose of it in a public bin or triple bag it - why should I be doing work because others who want dogs are selfish and lazy.

Who wants other peoples dog shit stinking out their bin for a week?

Plus you don't know who the bin belongs to. My neighbours grandfather has dementia so wasn't the best with hand hygenie. for that reason, they would take care to disinfect the bin and handles especially during Covid and people putting bags of dog shit in the bin was a source of distress to everyone because he would smell it and try to tip the bin to get it out.

Nasty and selfish.

SemperIdem · 14/03/2025 18:51

Dog owner here - I would never put my dogs poo in someone’s bin. It’s gross and entitled.

This is an excellent point. I had to purchase my bin, it cost me £35!

Better than it being on the pavement. This doesn’t bother me at all. I would rather someone used our bin than left it on the pavement for someone to walk in. However I am also one of those people who doesn’t get huffy about visitors/trades people using my toilets either for shock horror wee-ing or poo-ing in (ie for the purpose a toilet was designed for!!).
However I have a dog and use one of those pick up pouch things to put all bagged waste in whilst on walks and then always use my bin at home. I would never assume all people thought like me. I wish more people would use on dog walks.

Boredlass · 15/03/2025 07:42

It’s a bin. I wouldn’t care

stayathomer · 15/03/2025 07:44

Why don’t people just bring it home? Even worse that it’s after emptying, that’s horrible!
