Hot cross buns

Just a light hearted question, do you eat your hot cross buns toasted or cold/as is? I've always toasted them and my friend looked at me like I'm crazy and said she'd never heard of toasting them.

You are being unreasonable... I eat them cold as is.
You are NOT being unreasonable...
Toasted is totally normal

I’ll gladly have them both ways but toasted with lots of butter is my fav. No different to putting a tea-cake in the toaster.

Iknowaboutpopular · 13/03/2025 07:32

Toasted. With butter. And a slice of cheese. Trust me, game changer.

ShiftySquirrel · 13/03/2025 07:32

Well they should be hot, so...

I've never had a cold hot cross bun, always toasted, or when I lived my my parents, dad would oven warm them. With lots of butter.

FortyElephants · 13/03/2025 07:32

Eating a cold hot cross bun is a sad sorry experience. I've done it but it's so inferior to the toasted version it's barely the same treat.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2025 07:34

Of course toasted is normal. Why on earth does she think they’re called Hot cross buns?

Floatlikeafeather2 · 13/03/2025 07:35

Toasted, always. Your friend must have spent her life locked in a box if she's never seen people toast them before. I hope she'll take your lead and have a go. Warm is the only way to appreciate the spiciness that makes them different to any other fruit bun.

WindmillOfWimbledon · 13/03/2025 07:36

Yikes, your friend is bvvvvvu.

Talipesmum · 13/03/2025 07:36

Oven heated is best, splitting open the warm bun to butter when you take them out.
Next best is toasting them.
Will also eat them cold - they’re still delicious- but obviously they ought to be “hot”. Clue’s in the name.

Funderthighs · 13/03/2025 07:37

Sometimes I toast them, sometimes I don’t. There’s no right or wrong.

cardboardvillage · 13/03/2025 07:37

Of course you toast them. Similar to my partner who always eats bagels untoasted….its not right

Sunshineandrainbow · 13/03/2025 07:42

The clue is in the name ....... Hot!

TeaAndStrumpets · 13/03/2025 07:43

When I was young, most shops would close for all or part of Good Friday. It was a great treat to join the early morning queue at the baker's and buy hot cross buns, fresh from the oven. Yes they were HOT, and still pleasantly warm by the time we got them home.

SapphireOpal · 13/03/2025 07:43

I usually just warm in the microwave for 30s because I like them to not be crunchy, but they're definitely nicer warm!

XmasShoppingsister · 13/03/2025 07:44

Thanks everyone, toasted definitely seems the more normal way. To be fair, said friend is an older lady who seems to have led quite a sheltered culinary life. Never having tried even a Chinese takeaway!

HOT cross buns! Otherwise they’d just be cross buns and I’d be cross if I lost any opportunity for melty butter 😂
saying that, I don’t eat hot cross buns (nasty dried fruit 🤢) but others in my house do and they always toast them first.

Yes that was my comparison to her. We toast teacakes so why not hot cross buns.

ideally toasted but no proper cooking facilities at work so I do take them in and eat them un toasted too

Catza · 13/03/2025 07:47

I think untoasted bread is only acceptable when it is fresh from the oven or within 8h of baking. After that, it's toasted every time. I cannot think of a single bready item that I eat untoasted outside of this timeframe.

Ooh interesting, I'm going to try this!

I much prefer them untoasted with thick butter from the fridge, but I don't think toasting them is weird if that's your thing 🤣

Londonrach1 · 13/03/2025 07:49

If hot cross bun I'd just made as it is...however in the oven with butter on is the best way

I agree. I've just had a roll that I bought yesterday from Morrisons bakery counter. The crust had gone a bit soft but the inside was also past it's best. A couple of minutes in the toaster soon sorted that out.

Hot cross buns untoasted would be as weird/disappointing as having crumpets the same way.

I'd never thought of heating in the microwave, that way they would still be soft, but you also get the melted butter, must try this way too.
