To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

She seemed fake and smug from the start, @MemorableTrenchcoat . I haven't publicly commented on her other than to one royalist friend.

@SallyWD , she didn't bugger off. I've no idea if what Princess Di said was true, but she wasn't popular after the split. She was 'beatified' by dying tragically in an accident.

What do you mean, she didn't bugger off? They got divorced and she went on to live her own life. Some would call that buggering off because she left the royal family. Who knows if it was her or Charles pushing for the divorce? Either way, she was very publicly and highly critical of the royal family. She got some hate but it was never on the scale of the hate directed towards Meghan. There were always many, many people who loved her and saw her as a saint-like figure, long before she died. I remember it well.

Diana got a tremendous amount of hostility in the press I remember it well. And whilst she did comment negatively about the royal
family at the time she also did balance that with comments off she didn’t want to bring it down as it was her son’s birthright. Diana was an interesting mix, bit don’t forget she ruined marriages too.’

@SallyWD . She remained in the UK. I don't really care. She died decades ago.
I'm not really interested in the Sussexes either.

Interesting you say that in view of your user name...

You say you’re not interested, yet you’re bothering to argue with those you perceive to be defending her.

I don’t understand why it’s viewed as negative that Markle (and Hazza) “buggered off to the USA”.

I would think that was a positive.

Exactly, why be angry that a couple move to the woman's home country, especially when they've been relentlessly hounded here and no one likes them? The thing is, whatever they do is wrong. If they'd stayed it would wrong, if they go, it's wrong.

Me too. Well rid, I'd say.

By buggering off, I mean not being working royals.

I can understand why they wanted a safe environment for their children

I only remember people admiring him for doing a good thing, certainly not frothing anger. I'm not saying it didn't happen, not just in the circles I mix in. Unless you're talking about social media, which of course isn't real life.

Some if the press certainly stirred it up

and on MN there was some negativity

Social media impacts real life we know this

soupyspoon · 12/03/2025 19:14

I think people are a bit selective about what public figures are 'hated' and for what reason.

Public figures are often routinely criticised, harrassed, etc. Should only be for reasons where there has been a crime in my view

The one that comes to mind most, because talking about Marcus Rashford and feeding children issues has reminded me, (and I dont recall people 'frothing' about him at all) is Jamie Oliver. He is constantly mocked and sneered at, called fat, people criticising him, his family, his cooking, his shows, his businesses and mainly that started around the time he tried to prevent kids eating crap.

Read any thread on here and watch people go on about him.

Its the way of the world.

I mean your username heavily suggests that's not the case...

What on earth gave you that impression?

So your username isn’t a petty insult aimed at the Duchess of Sussex?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/03/2025 20:18

Hadn't thought of that. So you're saying she's narcissistic?

There is more than a bit of misogyny in some of the comments I have seen about the move. People seem to find it a case of him
being “whipped” or even in an “abusive relationship” because he left his home country to move to hers….

….but nobody had an issue with her doing likewise when she originally moved to the UK. So odd!

@Grammarnut

You're arguing against your own claim... she literally says in that quote that she is bi-racial. She said she 'could look exotic Caucasian' but made it clear she is bi-racial...

She makes it clear in the interview that she is half black and half white. Given that white is the global minority, and that statistically more people in the world have a dislike for white people over black, surely it's statistically therefore more likely that people dislike the whiteness of her?

oh yes that's the answer

white woman are always told to know their place

Yes, frequently. In fact, women in general, globally. Perhaps she's really not so different, or special.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.

LOL! Lots of white people hate the fact she is half….white?! 😂

soupyspoon · 13/03/2025 19:35

Statistically in the world more people dislike white people

And white people are a minority?

Hmm, so its ok to prejudiced against minorities is it?

Would you have the same reaction if the manager was complaining about someone else? Though I do agree a business meeting is not the place to discuss this

Two people I worked with had a big row about Nicola Sturgeon in a Teams meeting. Nothing to do with the subject of the meeting. There were only 3 of us in the meeting so I said "If you're going to argue about politics I'm going to eat my Weetabix" and left.
I was quite proud of myself 😂
