To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

When you have so much media hate, platforms like this where there are several threads only dedicated to berating this woman, it distorts the reality of some people. Being so immersed in their media eco chamber, they start to believe that the whole world shares their views and that they can bring this kind of berating attitude in the real word and in this extreme case in the workplace.

They fail to realise that other people out of their eco chamber either view them as racist( it doesn't matter whether you deem yourself to be or not, even if people won't necessarily say it to their face this is what they might think)or as a bit loopy in the best case scenario.

As I have said previously, I just can't believe that we have reached a point where people are ready to risk loosing their jobs in the midst of a COL crisis or even being passed for a promotion because people sees you as someone on the verge of a breakdown and not as a sensible potential manager for example.

Is it really worth it? Especially in this economical climate, is it really worth risking loosing your job and reputation for a multimillionaire who live overseas who does not even know that you exist?

This is wrong on so many levels, but apart from this, is this obsession really worth loosing so much and doing this to yourself?

Usually it does unfortunately but even worse are those that don't recognise their unconscious bias.

Meghan Markle’s character is what puts people off, not her ( very southern European) skin colour.
She’s very conceited and not very nice to her staff ( allegedly).

a few years ago people got irrationally angry towards Marcus Rashford apparently it was because he should have stuck to football and not meddle in politics

yeah right …

irritation over a famous person is one thing this barrage of frothing anger is something else

I only remember people admiring him for doing a good thing, certainly not frothing anger. I'm not saying it didn't happen, not just in the circles I mix in. Unless you're talking about social media, which of course isn't real life.

Huge exaggerations there, so people either have to be racist or have a mental health issue?

People aren't " doing anything to themselves". I'm not that interested but if that is what people want to talk about then fine

It's so easy just to avoid threads on here without all that handwringing, labelling and preaching

Eco chamber? Do you mean echo?

Posters are now openly making racist comments on this thread. I am pleased that one of them has been deleted, but frankly, now this thread has - as undoubtedly intended - become a lightening rod for other racist comments, the whole thing should be pulled.

People always have a black family member, best friend, or talk to their next door neighbour's sister's auntie who is black so they can't POSSIBLY be racist

Yep, my old school friend has a black step-dad who is much adored yet she, her siblings and her mum are all dreadful racists. If we point out the step dad is black they say "But he's different".

rookiemere · 12/03/2025 11:35

It shows a complete lack of professionalism, plus it's very dangerous to assume that just because you are in the same team, you share the same views about things.

DH has some USA colleagues, after the election they were having a meeting and one of the European colleagues asked how they were feeling on this sad day. Cue confusion from the US colleagues and the topic was closed down very quickly.

As a once off I would let it be, but any repeat and I would speak to her and then HR if it happened again.

Even if she is not very nice, it doesn't explain the sometimes insane levels of hate she receives. It's just completely off the scale compared to other not very nice people.

Nothing to do with her skin colour, adds '...very Southern European skin colour' to describe a Black woman.

Most people (and myself included) thought Marcus Rushford did a wonderful thing especially as he had lived experience of food poverty/insecurity and he knew exactly how that felt. I image I
most footballers wouldn’t give a rats ass but he did.

Yes I thought he did a great thing until I found out his earnings were being channelled through a company to avoid paying as much tax.
The tax he saved would have paid for an awful lot of school meals.

I have, it was. I'll report any others. I'm sure all the posters who are tripping over themselves to declare how not racist they are will do the same.

I remember Fergie getting the same treatment (pre and post toe sucking episode) so I'm sure she would have received the same levels of hate if social media had been around then.

Oh and I just wanted to add that all of the vile things people would say about Caroline Flack had an absolutely profound effect on her health. They didn't know her, yet they pulled her apart. There are human beings on the other end of these disgusting character assignations, who have real feelings.
Look at Katie Price as well, she is evidently very unwell, yet still people rip into her like nothing I have ever seen. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if things don't end well for her. I hope I am wrong. Be curious, not judgemental. They haven't committed heinous crimes, we all have negative traits, as well as people we know in real life. These are human beings that we haven't even met!

Leave MM alone, sure have an opinion if you wish, but making a full character assignation is disgusting, and quite frankly it says a lot about the person/s doing this.

Edited

I am often curious about that. I recall all of the “Be Kind” posts after the tragic death of Flack.

That seems to have lasted about 2.5 business days.
