To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

Do we have no opinions at all about people we dont know?

So all these threads about this or that celeb cheating on their spouse (one recently about that Danny Jones and some woman), lots of opinions there. Do they all know this bloke?

TempestTost · 11/03/2025 22:31

I couldn't be arsed about this, it's not the strangest pop culture opinion I've ever heard anyone go off about at work. I used to work with a guy who had a real thing against Mark Wahlberg, back in his Marky Mark incarnation (so 100 years ago.)

IT's such a frivolous topic, I couldn't take it seriously enough to be uncomfortable.

CalicoPusscat · 11/03/2025 22:34

@TempestTost I was thinking about him the other day as he's a hugely successful actor/family man in contrast to his violence and racism when he was younger.

I went on a date a few weeks ago. He had a rant about MM halfway through the meal, talking about how much he disliked her like he knew her (he doesn’t). Personally, I wasn’t that impressed, I feel like he spoke about his ex wives in the same tone so definetly a 🚩

Cripes!!

I'm actually starting to feel a bit sorry for MM - New York magazine did a very sad review of her show, trying to be sympathetic but it made it worse.

That this 'lifestyle' show is actually filmed in a rented property down the road makes it so strange and pointless, but I get the feeling she was forced to do that at the last minute by security protocols.

You haven’t answered her question and neither have you “educated” her

I don’t respond to racist questions and who on earth mentioned “educating people”.

Why are people suffering from MMDS so incapable of rational posts?!

That means you don’t know and are trying to deflect. How hard would it be educate?

You mentioned that he person you replied to should educate herself. So why don’t you do it?

HRTQueen · 12/03/2025 07:17

a few years ago people got irrationally angry towards Marcus Rashford apparently it was because he should have stuck to football and not meddle in politics

yeah right …

irritation over a famous person is one thing this barrage of frothing anger is something else

Most people (and myself included) thought Marcus Rushford did a wonderful thing especially as he had lived experience of food poverty/insecurity and he knew exactly how that felt. I image I
most footballers wouldn’t give a rats ass but he did.

Exactly, and at least MM has been an actor, married a prince, has been on her own show, among many other projects. I bet that's more than we can say for most if not everyone on this thread, myself included.

If I was her, I wouldn't give two f*s what insecure people hiding behind screens, or in little bitchy cliques thought about me. I would infact think if they're so concerned about me that it is bordering on an unhealthy obsession, they should seek therapy. It is important those people work on focusing on themselves and wondering why it is that tearing others they don't know down makes them feel good.
Goodness, of course, passing comments on celebrities is normal. Nobody is saying you can not have an opinion. Having an overly emotionally invested deranged rant, however, is not okay ever.

LipglossAlly · 12/03/2025 09:23

I can't believe that people are taking this obsession with this woman into their work environment risking their professional reputation and livelihood 😱. We are really leaving in scary times. Yeah she should be reported to HR.

Psychostates · 12/03/2025 09:26

Oh and I just wanted to add that all of the vile things people would say about Caroline Flack had an absolutely profound effect on her health. They didn't know her, yet they pulled her apart. There are human beings on the other end of these disgusting character assignations, who have real feelings.
Look at Katie Price as well, she is evidently very unwell, yet still people rip into her like nothing I have ever seen. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if things don't end well for her. I hope I am wrong. Be curious, not judgemental. They haven't committed heinous crimes, we all have negative traits, as well as people we know in real life. These are human beings that we haven't even met!

Leave MM alone, sure have an opinion if you wish, but making a full character assignation is disgusting, and quite frankly it says a lot about the person/s doing this.

I would be reporting her, more people need to call out this behaviour as doing nothing is enabling it.

Whilst she is absolutely right I'd not mention this in group situations at work. You can hate MM without being racist, she has plenty of other faults we can latch onto.

Jesus. In the nasty little world of crackpot, messed-up people posting their deluded, sexist, racist poison, your comment stands out.

This is a racist comment. I'm reporting you.

”I’m not racist one of my friends is black!”

I cannot believe people still do this. 😂

Lol, I saw that comment and rolled my eyes 😂

Well that isn't what I said, but you go on taking all the offence you possibly can if it makes you happy.

People always have a black family member, best friend, or talk to their next door neighbour's sister's auntie who is black so they can't POSSIBLY be racist

cristinayangcomeback · 12/03/2025 11:17

It's inappropriate that a manager would rant about anyone at a meeting
