To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

@FreyBentos your level of debate has included calling people arseholes and nasty pieces of work

What a foolish, exposing comment.

Yes you recognise yourself

I am not keen on meghan. I am
not racist and I wouldn’t bring it up in the work place.

edited to add, I also don’t rant about her, I’m just not that keen.

Edited

I wouldn't rant about it, but if someone asked me what I thought, I would tell the truth. This actually happened recently, although not in a meeting. I can't imagine it in a meeting unless it was at the beginning before moving on to the actual work.

Posters are now openly making racist comments on this thread. I am pleased that one of them has been deleted, but frankly, now this thread has - as undoubtedly intended - become a lightening rod for other racist comments, the whole thing should be pulled.

People like that genuinely don’t see how they undermine their own argument!

Meghan Markle’s character is what puts people off, not her ( very southern European) skin colour.
She’s very conceited and not very nice to her staff ( allegedly).

The same goes for James Corden. Yet he doesn’t attract anywhere near as much vitriol as Meghan.

I've tried hard not to engage with you and your acolytes - the pointless moronic exchanges are a bit soul-sapping. But seriously - you just typing this crap, assuming I'm white?

You're actually digging in with calling me a 'white saviour'? Christ.

The people who dislike her are very passionate.
The dinner lady and nursery practitioner at my last job had a full blown argument after the Netflix Harry and Meghan show dropped. The anti-meghan wouldn’t let it drop. Kept on saying that the Opera interview cannot be found online anymore as it was all lies and had so many random conspiracies she was very pro Kate aswell.

I think many of the people who have a strong opinion on her are very Royalist, not necessarily racists!

cristinayangcomeback · 12/03/2025 12:08

@Gwenhwyfar this

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/03/2025 12:09

@MemorableTrenchcoat , that might have something to do with James Corden not having had millions spent on his wedding.

JHound · 12/03/2025 12:09

Wendolino · 11/03/2025 20:47

I don't NEED to know, I did say out of interest, but maybe you don't understand what I mean.
I don't know why you say "angrily". I'm not angry, just amused.
You see, I know what you are, I've met plenty of people like you. Accusing everyone else of being racist, when they (you) are the most racist of all.
Jumping onto any supposed "racist" comment and twisting it to suit.
You're rumbled!

I think you are reading from emotion.

Which is causing you to see things not there. I have not called you nor anybody else on this thread racist.

You are lying.

That means you don’t know and are trying to deflect. How hard would it be educate?

I have not mentioned educating anybody. What on earth are you going on about?

Please go and quote the correct person and leave me out of it.

Several royals have had millions spent on their weddings, only for them to divorce later.

There’s a big article in today’s Telegraph about Mumsnet, and this thread was mentioned.

Seriously? That is hilarious!

JHound · 12/03/2025 12:14

It’s paywalled for me but that is hilarious.

You said that the person you replied to should educate themselves. So if you have knowledge to share why don’t you educate that person yourself?

Yes, I agree. I think it's too simplistic to say it's all racism although I believe there's an element of racism to it. I think there are a lot of very patriotic royalists who can not believe the bare faced cheek of some American woman stealing "our" Harry and dissing the Royal Family. I think a lot of it is anti-American feeling too.

People always have a black family member, best friend, or talk to their next door neighbour's sister's auntie who is black so they can't POSSIBLY be racist

I am just constantly bemused when I see using that argument unironically!

jellyfishperiwinkle · 12/03/2025 12:17

It's actually quite a good article compared with some of the shite written about MN in the past. Often drenched in misogyny.

SallyWD · 12/03/2025 11:34

Yep, my old school friend has a black step-dad who is much adored yet she, her siblings and her mum are all dreadful racists. If we point out the step dad is black they say "But he's different".

I do wonder about the self-esteem of men like that. I would be out of that family sharpish but I have met many a black man like this. Will smile sheepishly and disregard his partners racism towards people who look like him

Weird.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/03/2025 12:19

@MemorableTrenchcoat , yes, and people were mouthing off about Fergie and Lady Di too.

The difference is that M and H buggered off slagging off The Firm.

People, particularly women, in my experience, were criticising Meghan long before she did that.

You don't think Lady Di slagged off the firm?? She did that infamous interview talking about how awful Charles was, how he'd cheated on her, saying the royal family had no empathy for her mental illness. She said she threw herself down the stairs in despair and the Queen just thought she was being ridiculous.
