To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

Ranting about celebs at work is very unprofessional.
Ranting about politicians who's policies may affect your business and business decisions is more acceptable.

Why though? Aren't celebs there for our water cooler moments? Isn't that the entire point of MM and other pointless celebrities? That they are talked about by us civilians?

jellyfishperiwinkle · 11/03/2025 14:20

At least now you know she's a complete fruitloop and to avoid her.

prelovedusername · 11/03/2025 14:25

It depends whether you would feel the same if she went off on one about Trump, or Putin, or Jeremy Clarkson, or any other divisive figure. I don’t think it was appropriate in a work meeting but I certainly don’t think it being Meghan Markle should make a difference.

The tabloid hate for this woman amounts to bullying. Far less is ever said about other unsavoury members of this family.

With this I agree.

The problem is that she IS the actress and so it's almost in her DNA to seek the starring role, to see her name in lights, to tread the red carpet, to seek fame (sadly now, infamy), to be the one to dazzle, to be spoken about and to be the headline. Look at me, look at meeeee, why aren't you looking at me? Over here, the spotlight needs to be on me. That's fine, each to their own. Accept that not everyone will think you are as fabulous as you think you are. Every actor has to face the critics.

I can totally understand Harold wanting to be private (and if only he would be!), but for Meghan, that is not who she is. She wants no part of being royal, but boy, she loves to be in the public eye and loves more, to play make-believe royal and use the title given to her. Give up the Sussex, drop the duchess, and become plain old Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor and the world just might start to believe you.

I don't know why having opinions on someone in the public eye is inappropriate. A foaming at the mouth rant is a little out of place but discussing what is on TV and the people on TV is pretty normal work chat.

That's water cooler chat, not team meetings. Have you ever had a job?

Usually it does unfortunately but even worse are those that don't recognise their unconscious bias.

No its not uncconcious racism - I dislike MM because of her connection to the Royals. I also dislike Kate for the same reason. I absolutely despise William & Harry.

I am indifferent about them, because I've never met the people to make those concrete judgements. I take as I find, and don't operate on hearsay, or odd mistakes people make. We're all human, and all f* up from time to time. Obviously there are certainly exceptions to the rule, where their actions are absolutely irredeemable.

Munnygirl · 11/03/2025 14:36

Nobody would have waited 4 years to ask for a statement to be retracted especially one so damaging. If it was going to happen it would have been done there and then. And as for Prince Phillip and his very dodgy comments the apple obviously does fall far from the tree in Harrys’s case because he actually recorded himself uttering racist slurs toward an army colleague. Sorry OP off topic there

This is the final time I will respond to a direct quote at me.

I said "usually". I did not say "always". If people haven't got basic comprehension skills that is on them. If people haven't bothered to RTFT that's on them too.

I am sure there are people of all colours and creeds that may dislike her for some really banal reasons or in their opinion valid reasons. The same way many people had issue with Camilla. Or the same way people have issue with eg. Lady Gaga or Paula Radcliffe. Some people just don't like others!

Invariably though the ones that seem to have a complete rant and issue with MM do seem to have racist tendencies. I could even screen shot the number of "agrees" my initial post has to show that an extraordinary number of people have clicked "agree".

Surely this would depend on what you class as a rant rather than an opinion about her behaviour? And even then that would be down to your opinion only?

Totallymessed · 11/03/2025 14:40

Spirallingdownwards · 11/03/2025 13:31

No I said "usually" not "always" those people who have an issue with her do so because they have racist tendencies. It seems to have hit a nerve with you. If people don't fall within the "usually" category then people wouldn't have an issue with my comment.

Do you have any evidence whatsoever that most people who don't like her are racist? And please give the nasty little "ooh, have I hit a nerve?" digs a rest.

Munnygirl · 11/03/2025 14:41

FreyBentos · 11/03/2025 13:59

All those vile misogynistic quotes you thoughtfully quoted for the baying mob? She just couldn't hold them back? Just...spouted them all out, one after the other? How absolutely plausible. And you trotted faithfully over to AIBU to share? Bless.

Just stick with the moronic sexist claptrap in the mad RF forums, maybe? There's a LOT going on there for you to enjoy, as you probably know.

This comment is perfection

a video about her fashion choices popped up on my YouTube feed, (guess this happened because I do watch the occasional video about designers and fashion and had recently watched several about Alexander McQueen after reading a biography about him). Anyway I clicked on it out of mild curiosity and it was the most vile bitchy take down about her body shape, her fashion choices, her face, her hair, imagine the meanest of the mean girls in full flow and you get the flavour. It was sickening, I didn't bother to watch it to the end as I am not interested in her but also because I find that level of cruel, obsessive hatred beyond my comprehension. Serial killers get less opprobrium. It is so strange, I guess the only thing that vaguely interests me about MM is the way she triggers this level of insane hatred. I once saw a piece of an interview with that Angela Levin person (she writes books about the royals) and again it was this obsessive hatred which was so odd and unsettling. One of the reasons I think we should abokcith the monarchy is that it would help us grow up as a nation but I do suspect that they are a great diversion from the real problems in the country. While people are foaming at the mouth about M and H or swooning over Kate (who they used to hate when she was "Waity Katie") they are not thinking about all the real stuff going on

This is exactly it!! I'm no fan, I couldn't care less about her, but the hatred towards her is obsessive and vitriolic. It goes beyond my comprehension. Like you say it's inane hatred. There are hundreds of people in the public eye who are more loathsome than Meghan but they don't get anywhere near the same level of hate. There are some awful characters within the royal family but people just shrug their shoulders. Maybe Meghan isn't a nice person at all but I still don't understand the levels of hate and obsession.
Yes, it certainly does distract people from the real problems, as does demonising immigrants etc.

Not in the middle of a work meeting it isn't 🙄

It's not a big deal. So what if you felt a bit uncomfortable. Are you still in one piece?
Get over it. Get on with your work.

The Meghan Frothers need to get over it more like. OP wanted to get on with her work. It's the Meghan Frother Manager who needs to take that advice.

Well, he was probably told to by his dad or felt he had to.

From what we've seen in the last few years, it's not his Dad who tells him what to do and say...

Okaygoahead · 11/03/2025 15:45

Anyone who takes even a minute to think about any of them, much less have a rant in the workplace, has a very small life and needs to find another hobby.

Lampzade · 11/03/2025 15:53

I would be interested to know what the many reasons are because I honestly don’t understand the hate for this woman

Lampzade · 11/03/2025 16:00

Wendolino · 11/03/2025 13:43

I must be a terrible racist because even though I don't know M Markle, I don't like so many things about her. I'm white so I must dislike her because of her race.
I am going to have to report myself to my cousin's wife. She is black and we are very close friends and I love their children and they call me auntie. They'll all be surprised that I'm racist.

You can have black members of your family who you love but still be racist .
In fact you can be married to a black person and still be racist against other black people .
Having black friends and relatives does not preclude you from being racist .

Presumably that applies to all races and not just white people. Or is it racist to say that?

Totally agree
On occasions I have ventured into the Royal threads and have been shocked by the venom
directed at this woman .
I once made an innocuous comment about how lovely Meghan looked at a particular event
I received over fifty or so replies telling me how awful she looked. I was shocked
In fact, that was the most replies I have ever received in my time on MN and I have been on MN for many years .

No offence, but if you don't fully understand your subject, you shouldn't pontificate on social media.
