To feel a bit sick at this quote?

We need or fascia’s and soffits replace round the roofline. Bits have rotted and birds are getting in under the wood. Got our first quote tonight - nearly £15k!! I feel a bit sick at the thought. My question is, is this a reasonable quote? I have nothing to compare it to (yet). Am I being unreasonable to think this is a bit much?

Well, you all called it. They’ve phoned DH three times today, first to confirm we’re not interested and then twice from ‘head office’ to offer more discounts 😂 it’s gone from 15k to 11k to 9.5k in the space of one afternoon. I’ll be going with someone
local, thank you very much!

Oh I fucking hate that game.

As around local groups for recommendations. That’s how we found our builder who we use for everything, fantastic, doesn’t take the piss with money, does the job he’s supposed do

BlueFlowers5 · 11/03/2025 19:52

Scaffolding alone can cost around £5k a week OP.

NewsdeskJC · 11/03/2025 20:08

Jeez
We have had quotes for 4 bed detached SE, £2500 to £3000.
You could replace the roof for £15k

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 11/03/2025 20:40

My husband does this for a living too. North West England. He says under £3k. Broken down (very very rough guide only) 2x men 2x days work £1k, scaffold £500, materials £1000.

sgtmajormum · 11/03/2025 21:07

Good lord do you live in a mansion?
That sounds astronomical!
I had my whole roof replaced plus soffits, barge boards and gutters on a 3 bed end terrace for £11k about 2 years ago.

I think I'd be getting more quotes in if I were you!

Thank you so much for this! I was hoping for 6-8k but 15 had me nearly hyperventilating! I’ve posted on the local fb page and had one reply from a small family business, hoping to get some more ppl out for quotes during the week.

We’re in a 4-bed detached in NW England and paid about £12k for new windows, facials, soffits and guttering 2 years ago.

AlpacaMittens · 11/03/2025 22:16

Just to also add my experience, similar to others, I had several quotes for a landscaping job. The quotes were: 3K, 6K, 7K, 15K, 18K. Baffling!

DaDaniela · 11/03/2025 22:56

This is what AI had to say

Replacing fascias and soffits typically costs around £150 per linear metre, with total costs depending on the size of your home. For example:
• Small semi-detached house: Average cost is approximately £2,750, including labour and waste removal.
• Terraced house: Costs start at around £2,250.
• Detached house: Costs can reach up to £4,250.
Additional factors include scaffolding costs (around £450 per elevation per week) and material choices. Capping old timber with uPVC is cheaper at £85 per linear metre but less durable long-term. For accurate pricing, it’s recommended to get quotes from local specialists

We are Edinburgh and used Advanced roofline installations LTD (advancedrooflineinstallations.com) - based in Fife and cover all central Scotland. Were v. Reasonable and came recommended. About to move house and will be getting them back again to do my new house 🙂

Good luck with never hearing from them again. Soon you’ll wish you'd never heard of Anglian (I know, I’ve been there 😖).

We’re in a small detached house in the Glasgow area. Scaffolding will be needed, that was included in quote.

We are in a detached house outside Glasgow and are currently extending. As part of that we did our roof and all new soffits/fascias/gutters. The anthracite PVC with black gutters and downpipes were £6k in total for the house plus extension! That's before fitting costs. We also needed all new roof ladders built as they were rotten and we had jackdaws nesting in the soffits.

Nurse08 · 16/03/2025 18:00

Yep, like others, too high

EmoIsntDead · 30/03/2025 09:18

Update: a local company has been booked for May at a cost of 6k. They explained that was a bit higher than expected because of the one storey extension on the side of the house.

Well done @EmoIsntDead . It's really disappointing that some companies try to rip off people, gives the trades a bad name.
