To feel a bit sick at this quote?

We need or fascia’s and soffits replace round the roofline. Bits have rotted and birds are getting in under the wood. Got our first quote tonight - nearly £15k!! I feel a bit sick at the thought. My question is, is this a reasonable quote? I have nothing to compare it to (yet). Am I being unreasonable to think this is a bit much?

Oh, they definitely want the job, they just want you to pay triple the going rate.

Companies like Anglian have a sales script: offer a high price then reduce it because of some limited time offer. Even do the phone-their-manager-in-your-presence-act to make it seem they're making a special concession just for you.

£15k is more like the price of a new roof and probably on the high side of that too.

Lighttodark · 10/03/2025 20:16

You mentioned wood? I thought those parts were upvc, maybe that makes a difference

BunnyLake · 10/03/2025 20:18

Shop around. I needed some building work (damaged in a storm not covered by the insurance) I got a quote for £20k (nearly keeled over) and one for just under £3k. Went with the £3k and they did a great job.

It’s the original wood that needs replacing. Will replace with UPVC.

This is EXACTLY what happened

Had soffits done on our large house, with full scaffolding. Nowhere this price.

TeaRoseTallulah · 10/03/2025 20:23

Get some more quotes in, we paid £5 for gutters and pipes and 2 flat roofs and I'm down south BUT that was 7 years ago and they did it with ladders, one quote was nearly 500 more per day for a scaffolding.

I’m in Lanarkshire and can give you a number of someone good and very honest… Will PM you if you want it?

That would be great, thanks 😊

That is insane. We received 2 quotes 3 years ago, one for £4500 and one for £2400. Also included new downpipes and guttering. We went with the cheaper one. Looks great.

OxfordInkling · 10/03/2025 20:27

Anglian are scammers who quote at least 3x what the job should be.

you need more quotes - £6k or thereabouts max

TheChosenTwo · 10/03/2025 20:27

Get a couple more quotes, independent local builders not a national chain.
ask for recommendations in your local area.
At first I thought it was just someone who didn’t want the job but a big company like that have big overheads to pay for so will charge a lot a rest on their name.
We paid about 5K about 6/7 years ago down in the SE but we already had scaffold up as we were doing our loft conversion and rendering the house/replacing windows etc all at the same time.

lljkk · 10/03/2025 20:28

We had quotes that were insane for fascia boards., and some that were fine. In reality, We actually got away with sanding & repainting ( which was very good value, many years later repeated and still solid enough).

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 10/03/2025 20:30

They don’t want the job

Bunnycat101 · 10/03/2025 20:31

As others have said wait until you get the other quotes in and I’m sure you’ll get a smaller business in for much cheaper. Not the same thing at all but we’ve just been getting quotes for a small 2 by 2m bathroom and one of the quotes was £36k which was outrageous.

ERthree · 10/03/2025 20:34

We are in Ayrshire, Scaffolder Husband has just choked on his tea when i told him the tell price, he says and i quote " tell her to tell them tae get awa tae fuck" ( not bad for an English man)

Yellowpingu · 10/03/2025 20:35

Islands here. Got both mine and my Mum’s detached bungalows done for under £8k in total.

Crispyturtle · 10/03/2025 20:38

When ours needed doing we got a quote from one of the big window companies (might have been Everest) and the salesman made a big deal out of it being half price before producing a quote for fifteen grand. I told him a flat no.

We got it done by a local building / property maintence company for about three grand (this was five years ago)

Gonners · 10/03/2025 20:39

Anglian probably do want the job, but they are notoriously insane. Round here they used to send people knocking on doors to tell you that your windows urgently needed replacing. One told me that ours were not compliant with current energy standards - they had been replaced by a very excellent local firm the week before and were bang up to date. When I mentioned this, he accused me of lying. I wondered whether he thought that would make me want to buy from him.

My parents had their 4 bed house done with new windows as well for £12k.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/03/2025 20:46

Don't panic. Just move on to another few firms. You'll often get one or two that seem strikingly rip off tastic. I'm sure you'll get it for a better price.

Pinkstuffs · 10/03/2025 20:48

That’s insane, we had ours done last year for £4k, it included new guttering as well. 4 bed detached house and a porch, which they also clad. And this was oak effect plastic which is more expensive than white. Im in Yorkshire.

Doitrightnow · 10/03/2025 20:49

We had a first quote like that from Anglian Windows. Gave us a heart attack.

All other quotes were closer to £3k and all the others said we didn't even need new sofits.

MsCactus · 10/03/2025 20:49

We had our soffit replaced when we lived in a smaller house - it cost £150. Are you sure your quote is £15k?!

Cosyblankets · 10/03/2025 20:52

I'm in the north West.
4 bed detached
Gutters soffits and fascias with scaffolding all round i think we paid about 7k

DoAWheelie · 10/03/2025 20:58

My dad was a builder. If he saw a job he really didn't want to do he'd overquote for it. Either they'd turn it down, which he wanted, or they'd pay, and the extra money made it worth doing jobs he hated.

You should always at at least three quotes for jobs anyway.
