To feel a bit sick at this quote?

We need or fascia’s and soffits replace round the roofline. Bits have rotted and birds are getting in under the wood. Got our first quote tonight - nearly £15k!! I feel a bit sick at the thought. My question is, is this a reasonable quote? I have nothing to compare it to (yet). Am I being unreasonable to think this is a bit much?

They don't want the job.

Came on to say the same

Get more quotes, we needed this done at our last house, large detached, 5 bed, Anglian quoted £16k! Had it done by a local firm for under £4k. This was quite a few years ago.

Funnily enough it’s Anglican that gave us our quote today 🙈

We're in an extended detached bungalow in Glasgow area & cost around £2500 2 yrs ago to replace all soffit, fascia & guttering. Didn't need scaffolding but we did have that last Yr when rendering was done & wasn't expensive enough to push cost up to anywhere near what you've been quoted.
S&D did ours, they do work across Glasgow if you're looking for another quote. Had a few things done by them in past & been happy with all their work.

ChicMiss · 10/03/2025 19:35

That's a piss take. It should be less than 1k.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 10/03/2025 19:36

I was in a similar position, & my local FB group came up with recommendations & also "avoid at all costs"

Tulipvase · 10/03/2025 19:38

I’m pretty sure the likes of Anglican will at least halve the quote when you say no.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll add them to our list!

Also with Anglican be prepared to be exceptionally firm in telling them to leave you alone when they keep pestering you to take their now half price, only available right now quote (!)

The initial quote was closer to £20k, a few phone calls and it came down.

I think you could probably get a new roof on a modest detached for less than that. Definitely seek a comparative quote.

I am not surprised, they were our first quote,I can remember feeling upset and thinking no way could we get the job done and it so badly needed doing. Don’t give up hope, you will get a more realistic price. Perhaps ask friend or neighbours that have had it done, who they used.

RedFaerieBoots · 10/03/2025 19:42

We are in Fife and had ours done two years ago and it was 3-4k. Semi detached 3bed so nothing fancy.

We had a well known company try quoting us 10k and then tried to get neighbors to join in quote by banging on his door despite us telling him please don't ask he's on nights.

Needless to say we didn't go with them (once we finally got rid of the sales person) and went with a local company.

Gloriousgardener11 · 10/03/2025 19:44

Ridiculous price!
We had ours done last year, detached house in the South West so all four sides needed doing. Scaffolding, materials and labour all came to £3.5k.

We had a quote from a well known replacement window company and they were coming in at £10k
Shop around, look for a small, property maintenance type person and ask around for recommendations as well.

llovemermaidgin · 10/03/2025 19:44

£15k sounds like they didn't want the work or were hoping to mug you off.

Try a different religion, might be better value for money.

Sunshineandoranges · 10/03/2025 19:49

I got good quotes for other jobs from checkatrade. Trust a trader might also be good. I read reviews carefully before getting quotes

We’re in a small detached house in the Glasgow area. Scaffolding will be needed, that was included in quote.

I’m in Lanarkshire and can give you a number of someone good and very honest… Will PM you if you want it?

Lemonyyy · 10/03/2025 19:51

We had ours done 4 years ago, was £4800 (they also sorted a couple of bits on our roof within that quote) including scaffolding.

Literally came on to say the same!

This is a known thing trades do when they don’t want a job, will quote sky high (so you go elsewhere or they get a ridiculous sum for doing it)

Tradesmen are open about massively over estimating jobs they don’t want to do.

Get more quotes.

ItsCalledAConversation · 10/03/2025 20:04

Big house south coast of England, £4k just recently

Nomdejeur · 10/03/2025 20:08

They are either chancing their luck or don’t want the job.

Notjustabrunette · 10/03/2025 20:13

Contact an independent roofer. Had mine done a few years ago and was about 5k.
