Friend not doing an evening meal as “we had a big meal earlier”

Bupo · 08/03/2025 21:30

So I’m staying with a friend who invited me to stay. She lives in a nice town that many tourists visit.

This evening I asked if there was any meal prep i could help with for dinner. And friend said something along the lines of “oh I assumed you wouldn’t want dinner as we had a massive meal earlier”.

She’s not wrong. We went to KFC as a few of the restaurants we tried were too busy. It’s literally been years since I last went. I had a burger and two chicken wings. The chips were raw so I only ate a couple.

It’s not the lightest meal but surely most would still expect to eat/feed a guest. She’s not weird with food and a normal not-big-not-small size.

I had about 4 tablespoons of leftover rice and curry for breakfast.

I’m about to go on a “walk” to coop

If I've gone somewhere like KFC for lunch I probably wouldn't eat a full meal in the evening. More likely a light supper similar to what I'd usually eat for lunch. So toast or eggs etc or maybe cheese and biscuits. If you had such a small breakfast why did you have such a small lunch? It sounds like a miscommunication as to when the main meal was going to be. She ate her main meal at lunch time and you assumed this wasn't the main meal of the day so ate accordingly.

I'd just be making cheese or eggs on toast.

Ridiculous , get a life

Get yourself something decent from the coop, and get something for breakfast tomorrow. How can she serve you left over curry for breakfast? Everyone has breakfast stuff in boxes of cereal, toast, eggs, fruit, yoghurt. It’s all easy food. If I didn’t even get offered teat and toast I’d be upset let alone no tea either.

Actually we don't , due to severe financial constraint but would make sure some was bought and available should we have guests!

She’s in someone’s else’s house, she can’t just get up and start making dinner 😆🤣

Trishyb10 · 11/03/2025 23:50

so she can,t go to greggs and buy a sausage roll either? Get a grip

Maggiethecat · 11/03/2025 23:54

Have you bothered reading OP’s posts?

She was going for a ‘walk’ at night to get something to eat.

Trishyb10 · 12/03/2025 00:33

Oh thats great, problem solved,we can all sleep easy now

theJackofHearts · 12/03/2025 07:30

Laurmolonlabe · 09/03/2025 23:39

I would definitely want something, it sounds a bit chaotic for a host, but not to rock the boat I'd go out for a "walk" and have a little something whilst I was out.

I'd do this too.
I might do a slight hint and say 'I might call at the shop and get some crisps and a sandwich,do you want anything? Maybe then host might think Oh god I'm not hungry but I didn't ask if OP was! And offer her to make her own or offer to make a sandwich. Or if she was hinting that op should provide, say 'yes please I'll have XYZ'.

It doesn't seem like that's the case though. It sounds thoughtless. She'd eaten more than op at lunch and didn't note this, and assumed she'd not want anything else
Poor hosting. I'm not a kitchen goddess but even if people are just staying for one night to go to a gig or something I make sure I've got food in that they like, and I'm always ready to cook it for them.

it doesn’t do anyone any harm to miss the odd meal every now and then

As a guest to my house, you wouldn’t be missing a meal. I wouldn’t be that person to decide that you were.

But I guess hosting standards vary.

LighterSpring25 · 12/03/2025 20:58

When I was bringing up our DS we did 3 meals a day but we don't now.

I do feed quests but it's usually one meal as we don't have my sleepovers.

So you would have guests to stay and just not bother making them dinner because it doesn't do any harm to skip a meal? Nice

Longma · 12/03/2025 22:32

LighterSpring25 · 09/03/2025 13:32

People don't need 3 meals a day. Intermittent fasting is good for you.

I would have checked if my guest was hungry though.

Actually eating regularly is something I do need to do. Skipping meals interferes with my medication and can cause issues.

Cold onion bahjis (sp?) for breakfast are a wonder and a delight!

And lots of people across the world do not have special breakfast foods and eat savoury spiced food for breakfast eg Malaysia, Laos, Singapore etc

Exactly and its probably healthier than sugary cereals!
I always eat rice the next day its fine if its been in the fridge. Years ago before I had learnt about rice being a dangerous food I have even eaten it after it was left out all night and was fine.

LuckySantangelo35 · 13/03/2025 09:06

LovelyLeitrim · 12/03/2025 20:53

Who are you decide that?

@LovelyLeitrim

it doesn’t do anyone any harm though. If you have particular medication that needs to be taken with food then that’s different but for most of it it does no harm at all, and can actually be a good thing (I’m thinking of all the health benefits associated with intermittent fasting)
