To be a bit 'meh' about International Women's Day

Just that really.

My LinkedIn is full of posts from women ( mainly promoting themselves) about today.

Just fed up with it all.

Life still goes on unpleasantly for women , not saying my life is , but let's focus on other women not those who promote' look at me , look how great I am '

Didn't even know it was a thing.

Ringgogo · 08/03/2025 14:48

Oh yes it's a thing !

You think life is unpleasant for women, so women being happy and positive (and saying so) is a bad thing somehow?
I think you're just green with envy because other women's lives are better than yours 🤷‍♀️

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/03/2025 14:50

I usually avoid LinkedIn on iwd. It's full of companies saying look we love our women employees without addressing whether they pay them well or promote them to leadership roles.

Alconleigh · 08/03/2025 14:51

Deeds, not words. The vast majority of IWD stuff is words.

MyGardenHasGreatTits · 08/03/2025 14:51

Well, my mum and her friends worked hard in the 70’s and 80’s to get equal pay, make marital rape a crime, open refuges and get decent maternity leave etc. I think that’s worth celebrating. It also serves as a reminder we’ve still a long way to go.

💜💚🤍

The focus in my opinion is all wrong.

Urg! I’m sick of the negativity and people thinking that their bloody social media feeds are an accurate reflection of what’s happening in the non SM world.

But that's not being celebrated. It's all 'me me me '

Agree. Words for just one day too.

And why do you think you're the one who should decide other people focus?
It's not like there's one big joined up "thing" for IWD. There's a million things done for it. I'm sure you could find one that fits your ideals, instead of moaning about what others are at.

Ringgogo · 08/03/2025 14:58

@Regretsmorethanafew ironic that on IWD a woman is shut down for her opinion 🤔

My LinkedIn is full of posts from women ( mainly promoting themselves) about today.

Can you give an example of the sort of thing you mean?

I’m thinking there must be a fine line between ‘celebratory’ versus ‘promoting’ oneself.

aspidernamedfluffy · 08/03/2025 15:02

IWD has no meaning now that the men in dresses have hi-jacked it.

MyGardenHasGreatTits · 08/03/2025 15:03

Ringgogo · 08/03/2025 14:53

Not on my SM feeds or amongst my friends.

JillAndJenTheFlowerpotMen · 08/03/2025 15:04

I don’t mind IWD but am very cynical about the commercial rubbish that comes with it. So this year’s slogan is another alliterative phrase we’re meant to hashtag on social media. Mumtrepreneurs sharing hashtags is very 2015.

gollyimholly · 08/03/2025 15:04

Something which I do like about IWD is that I do actually learn about women in history that have done important things and I don't think I would otherwise have learned about them or come across them.

sillysmiles · 08/03/2025 15:06

I'm not sure what you want to see? Women being proud of their achievements shouldn't be supported on IWD?
If I've achieved something big in my career, why shouldn't I promote myself on IWD.

stayathomer · 08/03/2025 15:07

Haven’t done a thing today (am an author) but have loads of friends who have- if they do the ‘me, me, me’ thing you’re thinking of then someone will buy one of their books and get a few hours of them time! Try to think of it that people promoting themselves can be beneficial for others too!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/03/2025 15:19

I sense it's like valentines day - well intentioned but a bit commercialised

I didn't know it was happening this year, as world book day took my focus

It doesn't bother me, but would love for governments or powerful people to make life easier for women, ie by making food shopping cheaper

FourEyesGood · 08/03/2025 15:51

Ringgogo · 08/03/2025 14:58

@Regretsmorethanafew ironic that on IWD a woman is shut down for her opinion 🤔

But that’s your attitude towards the women who are trying to celebrate achievements! You can’t complain about negativity towards your negative attitude (well, you can - but it makes you a hypocrite).

Screamingabdabz · 08/03/2025 15:52

Social media is full of the ‘me, me, me’ types though. They’re who populate it and provide the content. Being from the olden days I’m still utterly shocked by the sheer number of unashamed self absorbed show offs there actually are. When I was growing up you left that to people who had some discernible talent or presence.

International women’s day is a noble endeavour and should be acknowledged. We should be honouring people who have brought about advances for the rights of women, not narcissists talking about themselves.

Ironic that that's what you're trying to do ..shut women down from promoting themselves or celebrating as they want.

Wildflowers99 · 08/03/2025 15:58

Yes it’s very self promotive (lots of cutesy selfies and talk of Me, Myself & I). In my experience the ‘women supporting women’ types are the absolute worst and really 2 faced.

steff13 · 08/03/2025 16:04

I didn't realize we were really supposed to be celebrating it. I thought it was just one of those "days," like International Left-handers Day or National Oreo Cookie Day. Am I supposed to do something? Should people be extra nice to me?
