Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

What does showing a visible sign of support, like a badge or keffiyeh actually mean though? Does it mean sympathy for the Palestinian people...or does it mean hoping for the destruction and removal of the only Jewish state in the world? Does it mean sympathy for the Palestinian people or does it mean supporting Hamas? How are people meant to know what it means without further context. And why show support for that particular cause over others? How about a badge showing their support for the people of Sudan or the DRC? There's all sorts of causes around the world which one could support....wonder why this one is so popular?!

It means sympathy for the Palestinian people. Hope that helps.
But don’t let the obvious answer stop you from flailing about wildly

I understand that you can't get ypur head around anyone taking a different stance to you.

It's really this simple: the Palestinian/Israeli war is a massively contentious issue.

Wearing a keffiyeh at work is a political statement in support of Palestine/ the Palestinian people.

I get that really really really cannot imagine that anyone would take offence, or feel threatened.

But lots of people disagree with you. Lots of people - mainly Jewish people - do indeed feel threatened and intimidated by outward signs of support for Palestine.

So... don't bring the contentious position to work. Pop on the t-shirt, wave the flag, whatever... outside of work.

It’s not remotely contentious to anyone with a basic grasp of history, human rights or right and wrong.
People who say it’s contentious tend to mean they think that what Netanyahu is up to is in some way justifiable. But it isn’t. So it’s not contentious.

Absolutely meaningless words...people may feel sympathy for many people and situations....just saying sympathy for Palestinians does not really explain anything

Alpaccas · 07/03/2025 22:39

It was clearly not cultural. It was political in this case.

How do you know?

Comedycook · 08/03/2025 16:25

I feel sympathetic for the people in Sudan.. I don't wear traditional Sudanese clothing in support. So again, why this conflict?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 08/03/2025 16:26

The only thing an employee of Sainsbury's needs to wear is their uniform and name badge. I'm surprised Sainsbury's is not enforcing this.

Looking at their policy I doubt they allow it.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 08/03/2025 16:30

Seeing the emaciated state of the hostages and people whooping and dancing around babies coffins didn't seem to provoke the least shame in the Pro Palestinian supporters. Neither did the events of 7th October - attack semi naked body of a raped and murdered woman being paraded on the back of a truck with Hamas boots on top of her to whoops and cheers. Lefties are really that desperate and degenerate.

JustSawJohnny · 08/03/2025 16:50

Let's not forget that it's perfectly reasonable to feel empathy for Palestinians whilst not being anti-Jewish.

Palestinian people are not responsible for the hideous crimes of Hamas.

Jewish people are not responsible for the actions of the Israeli government or army.

What I will not accept is being told that any criticism of the Israeli government is anti-Semitism.

We only need to look at Trump & Putin to see how awful a country Head can be and it is perfectly reasonable to criticise their policies and decisions without hating American or Russian people.

None of these are 'Israeli' symbols. They are illustrative of the Jewish religion, especially a kippah worn by men just as Sikh men wear a turban. It is rately a case of 'wearing them or don't' if you happen to be a religious person.
A keffiyah is not a religious symbol but a scarf worn in support of Palestinians.

It's a lot older than the support of Palestine pmovement being created for practical reasons.

The rainbow has been used for different reasons too in recent history.

Agree. I have several Jewish friends and not one of them supports what Netanyahu is doing. Their anxiety stems from the fact that because they are Jewish, people automatically expect them to support Israel.

I’m not sure you speak to everyone who wears a keffiyeh. Every Jew hating person shouting support for Hamas wears one that I’ve seen

What does it achieve to wear one? Does it stop the war? Or is it just virtue signalling?

Its possible but rare IMO

Palestinian people are not responsible for the hideous crimes of Hamas.

Who do you think Hamas are? Martians? And do you think Palestinians are appalled by them or by and large supportive of them?

And I know Jewish people who support Israel.

It’s funny how pro-Palestinians always know “Jewish people who support Palestine”. Most people I meet are terrified of what’s happening and feel very much at risk.

Possibly because us ‘lefties’ understand that not all Palestinians support Hamas, just as not all Jews support Israel. I’m neither lefty nor degenerate. I just subscribe to the notion that you can empathise with the Palestinian people suffering because of the actions of Hamas and Israel’s chosen path of retaliation without being anti semitic. Shouts of racism and anti-semitism are designed to shut down debate, and that’s not going to help anyone because without debate there is no solution and people on both sides continue to die.

This, God forbid anyone might feel a bit of sympathy for the torture the Palestinian people have gone through for the last 15 months, people can wear what they like when they like to show their support

We live in an area which has a very high Jewish population. Our best friends are Jewish - my closest friend of over 50 years and her husband. We’ve had many debates which are reasoned and intelligent - and possibly more importantly - avoid labelling people as you have just done, in order to shut down the conversation.

I think they are a terrorist group who rule with aggression.

I think Palestinians fear them, as many people fear oppressors who rule their lands.

I think Hamas are inherently bad.

I think the way many Jewish leaders have treated Palestinians, even before this current conflict, is bad.

Mostly, I believe that the vast majority of both Israelis and Palestinians are good people just trying to live their lives and who had nothing to do with the current conflict. They are just victim to it.

Any country that uses an 80 year old man as a human shield and shoots a 12 year old and prevents an ambulance from helping him deserves every bit "performative actions" around the world to call them out.

You’ll be calling out Gaza for sure, then.

I didn’t say they agreed with me did I ? I said they don’t support what Netanyahu - Israel - is doing. And their fear is that they will be judged as supporting Israel simply because they’re Jewish. There are many elements to the conflict and this is one of them. Not all Palestinians support Hamas, just as not all Jews support Netanyahu’s government. That’s fact.
